r/AmITheA**hole In today's episode, OP's girlfriend has a pregnant sister, who moves in with them after her boyfriend kicked them out. For some reason, the pregnant sister starts to immediately have an issue with OP's cat. She's constantly criticizing the cat, and she even intentionally takes the cat out into the middle of nowhere and leaves it there. Luckily, OP is able to find the cat, and he promptly kicks the pregnant sister out of his house. Now everyone is calling OP the butthole in this situation. What do you think?

Agreed. You can still talk to friends about their plans without talking about your own finances. And even if they ask about your finances/plans, you can be vague and say “We’re doing a lot of saving right now” or “I still have my college car, but I love it and I’m sure I’ll get a new one eventually” Instead of pulling the “Oh woe is me, I’m just a poor poor millionaire”

@@afuzzycreature8387 You are American, right? That means your culture is also American. Your frame of reference is based on your language and location. Even with mixed heritage you will still identify with the culture that surrounds you and where you feel comfortable. Being deaf means that your culture is based on a language that is different from the type you can experience as a hearing person. Like, you can watch a movie in Vietnamese using subtitles or listen to the radio. But a deaf person won't have the same experience of a movie and the radio do nothing for them. Thus, their culture is centered around the things they _can_ experience.

In the UK your banned from teaching bsl to your kids and bsl isn't even used in schools for the deaf !! My daughter is deaf ( high tone deafness ) and I wanted her to learn bsl as i wanted her to learn her own language but was told not to teach her so it's not always the parents fault if like us they were told that they are not to teach them and there are no bsl courses that teaches deaf children which means the parents have to spend a fortune £1000s to learn several courses then teach the child which is very difficult as you can't do a basic course and teach it. I know basic sign although I'm very rusty as I've not used it in years and can no longer hold a conversation in bsl, I'm also not equipped to teach it, but even if we were able to teach it she won't be allowed to use it as in mainstream schools and colleges and even in schools for the deaf they are not allowed to use bsl, they don't provide someone to sign for the deaf in schools and colleges either to help them understand what's going on . The kids are taught to use their voices. The only time a deaf child is taught to sign in the uk is if the parents are also deaf and sign all the time and they use it at home or with friends. Basically they are taught from birth by deaf parents Yes I know it's all backwards and stupid but that's the way it is I'm afraid. At the end of the day basically it's the deaf who must learn to mix into a hearing world not the hearing world mix in with the deaf world which I hate even as someone who is hearing I learnt bsl as a child as my aunt is deaf and i was told turn of your mouth turn on your hands in deaf club so I taught myself I got by but used it less and less over the years but I was able to help deaf people in shops or at the train station a few times etc. If I need to sign now first thing I sign is please sign slowly my bsl bad lol then I struggle through it but it's rare I need it now. My daughter talks, uses hearing aids and she has a radio aid we bought her to use in college which provides a direct link from teacher to her hearing aids . Sadly its still very much a hearing world of which the deaf must try to fit in not the other way round people don't like different so they make the deaf community fit into a hearing world by making the use hearing aids and equipment to help them hear better and teach them to talk rather than let them sign. I'm not saying I agree with it im just saying this is the world we live in and yes it's wrong I've seen first hand just how they make deaf people fit in to a hearing world and sometimes it's difficult to watch I've had many arguments with teachers for the deaf about this over the years and when my daughter showed them I taught her the signs for some animals she asked about dog, cat , rabbit, I was told if i carried on teaching her bsl they would stop the school support she needed !! So that was quickly stopped as my daughter has learning disabilities so she needed that support, so please don't always assume it's the parents fault it's the world we live in

Actually I disagree. The OP of that story should sit down with his fiancée and tell her to quit being so passive about her sister’s issues and stand up for the both of them. Dumping her may hurt the fiancée and potentially damage the relationship beyond repair. Also, this couple needs to go no contact with the sister for a while. What the sister did was disgusting, this much is obvious, but it should not come between a loving relationship. If OP and his fiancée want to keep their relationship, the fiancée needs to learn how to properly stand up for herself and others and OP needs to get the cat microchipped if he hasn’t already so that he can find his friend again more easily in case this happens again. For both of them, bar the sister from seeing them ever again until her issues are gone.
@michamocha
@michamocha 3 жыл бұрын
@@kittyrose1245 And I disagree with this. This wasn't a simple argument where the sister instigated a fight and the gf stayed 'neutral.' This involves the life and wellbeing of an animal, mind you. The sister intentionally abandoned the cat and was only caught because the neighbor saw and brought the cat back. The sister, knowing what her sister did, tried to stay 'neutral' and have the cat stay at a friend's rather than acknowledging how fucked up the sister is and that it's the cat's home too. This is op's cat, not hers. It became an issue in the relationship when the life of op's cat was threatened and the gf didn't immediately put her sister in her place. She let this toxic woman into op's home and tried to excuse it by saying 'she doesn't know how to treat cats.' Op and his cat are clearly distressed. Hurting her feelings is the least of anyone's worries in this.

Dude may be able to barbecue but he couldn’t do the complete package of preparation. I agree with the final assessment however I am of the opinion that a good barbecue inherently takes at least 2 people to prepare. 1 for meats, drinks and a few other minor things prior to it actually happening and the other for sides and to split the prep work in setting the table. Dude is the asshole no doubt. However, two are definitely needed unless people are asked to bring sides or sides are ordered ahead of time. My aunt and uncle have a 4th of July bbq every year and there is always at least 5 setting up. Two active grill masters making sure everyone gets the desired type of meat at the right cook and alerting the “runner” when coolers are getting empty. Inside there are two making or putting final touches on sides greeting people as they come in and help with the table as sides are ready etc. the runner helps them by helping set the table and is the main source of communication between grill and sides

She constantly complained that they were broke, even though she lived in a wealthy community, in a two story house that she paid for in cash and had all new cars in the garage. Right? Cats act jarringly similar to kids. They're not as child-like as parrots, but more so than dogs. Cats act half like a wild animal, and half like a toddler. If you can't handle raising a cat, which is basically a slightly more dangerous but easier to raise child, then you definitely can't handle raising a kid. In terms of behavior, they straight up just act like kids that like to occasionally kill and eat small animals. The actual care is vastly different, but if you can't handle how cats BEHAVE, then you'd really hate a cat that screams instead of growls when it's mad and throws stuff across the room.

I am angry about Billy. Someone tried stealing our cat Bertie once (blue russian cat, pretty rare to see where I live but relatives had their car pregnant so we asked since we were looking for a cat). After four days that he did not come home (and after four days of searching and asking neighbours to check their garden sheds and greenhouses since he was a very curious and adventurous cat) we put out posters and day later we noticed some people investigating the poster very thoroughly when we went looking for him again, they were calling someone else and suddenly within that day hour Bertie showed up in our back yard, limping. After that he was afraid of men (me included, I was his guy before this, he'd sleep at my feet and curl up on my lap to sleep and I'd be the first person he'd ask to play with him, he's never done it after he returned), especially if they wore leather jackets (I had to start dressing up for motorcycleride or put on my club racing jacket which looks kinda like a black leather jacket in garage since if I did that in hallway and he saw me he would hide for hours behind washing machine). He started being lethargic. Afraid of people - he loved people before, visiting neighbours that loved him was his favourite past time. He stopped being adventurous and runs away if we open door. Getting him to travel box is a fight, he used to not mind it even after experiencing multiple vet visits. He was completely different, like he had a PTSD. He also refused to eat for 3 days, even his favourite snacks. You could count his ribs... It's been two years and he still has not fully recovered. What was once a very adventurous, sociable cat is now a cautious, stressed cat that hides when someone visits and gets scared by open doors or sound of doors opening. And yes, it is our cat - we had him chipped because we were letting him outside and municipality asks owners (its voluntary but saves you trip to shelters since they know exactly whether the cat is stray or not and if ot os vaccinated etc so we decided there's no harm) to chip the cats. Vet checked the chip and confirmed it is Bertie. I reviewed camera footage that we have in our driveway and over backyard (I have cameras there mostly to check if UPS etc brings a parcel and in backyard - our friends often use backyard to come visit us since they are also neighbours so we have a gate between backyards so it works more like an intercom but I found cheap IP cameras to be much better system to use than an overpriced intercom and also I do own some expensive racing stuff in my garage so I kinda want to have camera for insurance purposes) and yeah, someone pulled over, climbed the neighbours fence and tossed (literally tossed, like a ball) Bertie over our fence which is 8ft tall privacy wall. He nearly landed in a pool where he would drown/freeze to death since it was winter and there was about foot of cold water in it and no ladder (that he would not be able to climb anyway) and limped to the door. The thing is - there's 5ft gate right next to (like 4 steps down) the place where they tossed him over. Then you can see the same car turn go away. Sadly the cameras are cheap so you can't read the licence plate or see the face clearly but it was a fairly burly guy in his 30s in what seemed to be a lime green E39 3 series BMW. Pretty uncommon looking car so... If you own a plastidipped/wrapped BMW then I officially hate you. I am thankful for Bertie being back and not drowning bit holy shit just knock on the door and lie that you found him instead... We did specify a reward (about $700, to make people really check their gardens if they did not lock him kn a shed by accident) for finding and returning him.

He would make comments along the lines of, "Oh, I'm so tired of being poor." And we weren't. We had a house, two cars, all bills were paid, I made sure he had extra spending money every week; but in his mind, we were somehow poor. I don't understand his way of thinking. If we had everything we needed, lacked absolutely nothing, and still had extra, how did that make us poor? He is not from here. He is from Venezuela, and I don't know if that played a part in why he thought we were poor, but I NEVER understood why he felt that way. In addition, he was VERY bad with managing his money. After he left, he'd call me complaining and crying about not having enough money to pay his bills when he made significantly more money than I did as a General Manager of a company. That is their language. Also, if the ceremony is performed in ASL, he hearing impaired can WATCH the ceremony while it happens and focus on the bridge and groom. However, if the ceremony was in English, the hearing impaired people who have to focus on the interpreter, thus taking the focal point away from the happy couple. However, if the people who can here are just LISTENING to someone, they can still watch the bride and groom while LISTENING. I know basic sign although I'm very rusty as I've not used it in years and can no longer hold a conversation in bsl, I'm also not equipped to teach it, but even if we were able to teach it she won't be allowed to use it as in mainstream schools and colleges and even in schools for the deaf they are not allowed to use bsl, they don't provide someone to sign for the deaf in schools and colleges either to help them understandwhat's going on .

If the owner of Billy the cat is reading this......leave your fiancee!!! Wow, she waved some massive "red flags" throughout your story. There's clearly some things you do NOT know about your fiancee & I bet you'll "see it all" after marrying. Just avoid the eventual falling-out by escaping now! Pet lovers should avoid relationships w/ ppl who do not care for pets the same way.....too many issues arise from trying to force some1 to accept a pet when they really don't care much.

The first story: When the mom said “having an interpreter will make it harder for me to understand!” She… she realizes that the interpreter is literally going to be speaking out loud in a language she understands, right? They’re going to be speaking in english.

I don't think Hannah currently deserves a score. She learned about how bad she made her sibling feel, and not only felt bad but decided to go back to therapy to work through it. Heck, based on OP's wording she didn't even tell OP about it. In the past what she did was bad, but I don't think she's done anything wrong recently enough to be judged harshly.

I love your interpretation of ASL being more American than English. It's so obviously true and brilliant

If OP can't say no to the abusive family living in her home, why would she have the spine to keep the money from the sale? Just file to legally evict all of them and hold firm.

Gotta say I found it somewhat amusing that you responded to a deaf person without thinking of using subtitles or the like rslash 😛

Well, the be fair, he parents did give her the gift of hearing. And she chose to be deaf instead. I would take that as an insult personally. And who in the hell chooses to be disabled? That would be like me choosing to stop taking my medication so I can "fit into the community" of depressed people. It's just stupid.

Ugh 🤦‍♀️! That last story grinds my gears as well as the money story. When my husband and I got married all of a sudden it was my job to take care of EVERYTHING. Birthdays, Christmas, Weddings, Christenings, get togethers for mine and his family. I worked full time until our kids were born and then was a stay at home mum. I went back to work but part time when they were in high school. For Holidays, I was told what to bring. Also, I told him he was marrying into a family with a lot of money but no one lived excessively. He was and still is fine with that but his family would say all the time how I shouldn’t burden my husband with making all the money just so I could raise our children. And that I shouldn’t be spending his money to go to the events we went to. My hubby would speak up to defend me being a stay at home mum and wife but never said I paid for a lot of things as well as took care of the kids, house, gifts, cards, etc. One day I snapped when his brother told me I was a freeloader. I waited until the whole family, his, were in one room together and then announced that from now on they were to tell my hubby what to bring for get togethers and that I paid for many things as my net worth when we got married was over $3 million and just got bigger every year. And that was just MY money. I had been investing since I was 18. My family’s net worth was well over $500 million and I refused an allowance from it. They were gobsmacked! I am very simple and don’t need designer things. I didn’t even want an engagement ring as it was a waste of money to wear a diamond that was impractical. We had just bought a house and I was, still am, so happy with my wedding band. They actually got furious with ME for not getting them better gifts! Thankfully my hubby had my back and we left. I’ve never held back on money for my husband or our family. We’re married, I share with him and he never has to ask for money. We always talk to one another before buying something a bit expensive to be sure the other is fine with it. His brothers stopped getting things for our daughters because they obviously didn’t need it! What? Not even a card for Birthdays, Christmas, graduations...our girls would be thrilled with a card. But nope! Also, we have never overindulged our kids. They earn their own money and will start getting an allowance at age 30. It’s all in the Trust paperwork. It’s not their’s and they need to work hard for the things they want. When they wanted iPads, they paid for half. Same with phones, iPods, gas for their cars. How can they value what they have if it’s just given to them?! When my nieces and nephews graduated High School, they were angry that they only got a certain amount from us! The same as amount was given to those on my side as well. Ugh! It’s infuriating how people treat each other. Especially when it comes to money.

if my fiancee's sister threw my cat out and my fiancee didn't stop her, i think what i would do is change all the locks while they're out, and just leave a sign on the door with "it's over, don't come back, keep the stupid ring". someone who's mean to my animals does not deserve a proper goodbye.
