@@bently_june5960 and then ordered a salad because "nothing was there." And then blamed it on her religion. I don't think her religion has a problem with duck or fish. My point is more on the ethical standards of being an example to youth. She has every right to order what she wants. But she isn't exactly role model material either for someone struggling with an eating disorder. And just having been told that the girl has an eating disorder, and STILL order a side salad? Yea...from the daughters perspective, I would not be surprised if she thinks OP is a fraud (the daughter) and not a good example either. So yea. She has every right to order what she wants. But I hope she doesn't expect to be taken as some sort of example to someone with a disorder, because she's the opposite.

OP's kids will be telling whichever officer comes by to look into this matter exactly what they knew had happened, so if Tim gets legal consequences then that's on him rather than OP. A a type one diabetic myself, I also experienced something similar to the story in the video: I used to work at an office and would often check my blood sugar. I was never bullied by any other employees about this UNTIL I raised enough money to get a service dog who will paw my leg whenever my blood sugar is too high or low. Because of my dog, I don’t check as often, maybe once or twice during work compared to around 10 times. My freaking manager comes up to my one day and tells me that he’s so glad I finally got my service dog because he and the other employees were disgusted with me for always checking my blood sugar. Like I said in the beginning, I used to work here. I quit the day after my manager told me this, I was not dealing with their crap just because I was trying to stay alive.

This! I have actual anxiety triggers around children due to PTSD, and I still wouldn't (a) whine about being invited to someone's family celebration, in their home, that includes every member of their family, i.e. kids too, OR (b) lure away, lie to, bully and imprison said kids! Because I'm the ADULT there. I may not be socially skilled, but I can stammer an apology and remove myself from a situation if I feel myself freaking out. And that's what I'd naturally do, rather than try to remove the kids from, again, THEIR family event in THEIR home. Who even contemplates that as a rational option? Tim is 100% sus. This was premeditated. He should not be around children. Nobody who views children as non-people should be around children.

@@Ayaforshort Yeah but if I can be honest here you will find yourself in situations you don't like, for all of your life, there's no such thing as a perfect life were everything goes right. OP has a medical condition that can became a matter of life and death, James has a phobia, yeah it does things to your brain and it sucks, I know I have pretty severe phobias myself, but James said he's getting therapy for it. Sometimes you need to compromise. Ok even if it freaks you out knowing that if you hear "wait a sec" you know what OP is doing, but at the very least you don't need to see blood or a needle. It sucks to say it like this, but I learned it pretty quick in University, sometimes you have to suck it up and get on with your life. And actually exposing you to your phobia, in this case even without having to see the "crime weapons", is a good thing to help you overcome it a little. It doesn't cure you, but if you live your life running from your problems they are only gonna become even worse. So yeah. Work and study do not care if you have poor/fragile physical or mental health, and sometimes the only solution is to suck it up and get a move on, there's no other way. Edit: typos

@@Ayaforshort I'm not an expert on phobias or anything, but OP said the process only took like 10 seconds, so as a compromise could his colleague maybe knock and wait 10 seconds everytime? Like even if OP isn't checking his blood he can still wait 10 seconds before telling him to enter, so his colleague would know that he has to wait even if OP isn't checking blood and could assume that he's not most of the time. Not sure if that would actually work or if the colleague would still be too focused on the idea that there could be a needle though. I know phobias can be tricky to work around.

If you won't say it, I will. Its likely Melissa's fault that her daughter has an eating disorder. This may not be the case for every person, but my wife has an eating disorder. She has had it all her life. She's tries to get past it, but its hard for her. We had no idea where it came from until about 4 months ago when my son was watching TV with us and he broke down crying. Apparently my father in law called him fat multiple times, so he thought he was fat. He's 6. What kind of piece of human garbage calls a 6 year old fat??! He's already on the lower end of healthy. There is no excuse. If Melissa's daughter has an eating disorder, and Melissa is hyper focused on diets and weight, then likely it's Melissa's fault that her daughter has the eating disorder.

Mom is definitely a jerk, no question about it. However, playing devils advocate here, OP DID just mislead the daughter. So for the daughters perspective, OP is very much a liar. She just told her she doesn't limit what she eats, just eats in moderation...then orders a salad because there was nothing else for her. That was actually a great time to demonstrate what moderation means, and instead resorted to what most in an eating disorder would do. I'm not an expert in Hinduism or Brahma, but I'm pretty sure duck is ok. Or I'm sure there were fish options. From the perspective of it being a so called work function, she's in the right and can order whatever the hell she wants. But from an adult perspective, she didn't show to be a good example for a young girl struggling with an eating disorder. So from an ethical point of view of an adult to a teenager, she is a jerk. She doesn't have to be an example for youth. But then again...people should stop crying about the youth not having any good examples when you're not willing to be one.

@@Rhaenarys I never meant that OP was in the right. I just think the mother is responsible for her daughters condition. If the mother hadn't tried to force the duck in the first place, the girl may have viewed the OPs choice in salad as just a preference in meal, and not a restriction. I have sympathy because I have certain things that trigger serious anxiety/PTSD episodes, but here's the deal. - Responsible management of diabetes means blood sugar monitoring and insulin. - Responsible management of phobias and the like means informing anyone who needs to know (and your workplace first-aider and HR absolutely DO need to know; for example, injections are used to treat anaphylaxis and diabetes), and taking rational steps around something you know to be a risk factor. Life will be weird without them. They'll always be in your memories. The sadness doesn't go away completely, but comes less often as time passes. After a while you'll find you have room in your heart for another animal, and then you'll be able to give a new pet the decent family life your past ones had. As a cripple rSlash (I’m mostly bedridden disabled with mobility issues) who uses a walking cane, I am deeply moved by how much you defend disabled people, and that our medical equipment is essentially an extension of ourselves so we can cope. I also fully agree with you, she absolutely should go to the head teacher/principle/dean (I’m not sure what you call it in America, sorry) and complain about the teacher. The teacher is being constantly ableist, that’s not right. I had an ableist teacher one in the mid 2000’s when I was in high school, spoiler alert, I got her fired and blacklisted from the area: there was a deaf girl, Carly, in my classes, she couldn’t really speak properly and was almost mute. We had a maths teacher who tried forcing her to speak, where Carly’s disability assistant repeatedly told the teacher “she can’t speak, this is unnecessary and cruel”. Teacher constantly ignored her, so I stood up, raised my voice, and told her “You’re being a piece of shit trying to force a literal mute to talk. You know she’s deaf and cannot speak, but instead of respecting her disability you’re forcing her into an extremely uncomfortable situation in front of an audience.” I, naturally, got kicked from class, and signed an apology to Carly, she signed back a massive “thank you”. Instead of reporting that I’d been kicked from class however, I went to the deputy head teacher, a man who I trusted (I’m bisexual, I suffered a lot of homophobic abuse) because he genuinely cared about protecting minorities. I told him what had happened and he was RAGING. “When did this happen?” “Literally 2 minutes ago, she’s still teaching the class” “Carly is still there?” “Yes” “Leave this to me, you’re going to come with me tho, but don’t say anything” He aggressively opened the classroom door (he’s a former marine) and used his authoritative voice when speaking to the class, telling them class was dismissed, but would be grateful if voluntary witnesses could stay behind. Most kids didn’t care and left, but a few stayed behind, along with Carly’s disability assistant. He got everyone’s names down and told them he’d ask them for witness statements, just write down what happened on a piece of paper and hand it to him within a couple of days, because they needed to do an official investigation. Because he already had my testimony he was going to let me go and requested that I also write down what happened for him, and thanked me for telling him immediately, but before I could leave the teacher started shouting how I was rude and that I’d “ruined” her class: “No ma’am, you did that all by yourself” The former marine deputy head teacher glared at her, she immediately stopped shouting. We all left the classroom and in the hallway we could hear shouting. One week later we had a completely new teacher. She said the old teacher “quit suddenly” because of “personal reasons” and that she’d be our teacher from now on, and if anyone had any disabilities or special needs to let her know and she would accommodate you as best she could (my adoptive sister has a wheelchair, so her leaving 5 minutes early so she can get to her next class, that sort of thing). I, being a curious and nosy wee bugger, visited the deputy head and asked what happened “She got fired, we have no place for discrimination against disabled people here. We’ve told schools in our district what happened so she won’t be hired at any school in the North East. There is no place for ableist teachers” So yes, she should absolutely tell her head teacher about the ableist discrimination she’s facing. Can’t promise she’ll be fired mind you, but she can certainly get into a lot of trouble, especially if she has a pattern of behaviour and behaves in a similar fashion towards other disabled students.

About the last story: I, too, have major needle phobia, and have some relatives with diabetes, so I'm pretty sure what James was asking for was unreasonable. OP has a serious, life threatening condition that needs to be taken care of, and he can't just stop checking his blood when he needs to, while it's fairly easy for James to avoid seeing OP in that kind of situation. I usually do get tense knowing someone is using a needle near me, but it's a LOT better than seeing it happening, so warning James not to enter would probably be the best option.
