For those not fluent in Japanese, this is two 189 Series trainsets entering and leaving Nihongi Station on the Shin'etsu Line between Nagano and Naoetsu. Because of the station's unusual track setup, the trains have to enter and leave the station in a "zig-zag" fashion.

Useful video for anyone who does switchback operations are feasible. Well, you have to do them slickly, but otherwise...
Yes, nice video!! The camera zoomed in on those switches, very cool!!!!!!!

Probably because both trains have to make stops at the station (where the camera is filming from). Also both directions are single tracked so it makes sense to use the station as a passing point. If they were to move the station 1 or 2 train lengths ahead to where the shed is, trains would not need to maneuver like this.

@@nicholaslau3194 The station has to be where it is , however, because it needs to occupy a flat area -- but the line (which runs from bottom-left to top-centre) is on a steep gradient. Hence the zig-zag (switchback) operation. The line with the snowshed -- a level head-shunt (switching lead) for the station -- is a dead end, just like the one on which the station itself stands, so moving the station here would make no overall difference (operations would just be a mirror image of what they are now) ...except that the station would in all likelihood then be in a less convenient situation in terms of the community and the industries served.

Jim, the "siding" you mention is part of the station, and -- as Nicholas Lau says -- both trains have to serve the station. Both trains, in their turn, also have to visit the track with the snowshed because that is where they can reverse safely (i.e. on the level -- the main line in both directions being on a steep gradient).
Hola a Todas y Todos. Yo solo hablo español. Pero me fascinan los Trenes y Japón tiene muchos modelos. Ojalá y algún día en México lleguemos a tener nuevamente Trenes de Pasajeros. Un saludo desde la Ciudad de México para Japón.
Hello, Why do they do this? Where is the left line going? And whatfor is the shelter? One could go straight through with the switches! WE
