We're all thinking and praying for Ukraine. Thank you for the wonderful interview, Yana (not sure how to spell her name in the Roman alphabet) and Joshua! I hope that all of her family is safe! On a more cheerful note, I didn't realize that Carol of the Bells came from Ukraine. As someone who's listen to a ton of Greek Orthodox hymns as a baptized Orthodox, there was always something oddly Byzantine about the melody of the song, but I could never quite place my finger on it. Now I know why!
(Typing this in my native English) My mom got fluent in English in around the same amount of time! Yanna, though, I must say, is really good at speaking with a close-to-native sound. Impressive!
2nd comment that I would like to make: I wonder if Yana ever studied Japanese pitch accent. Usually the guys and gals in the KZbin language community who can get their verbal Japanese to sound close-to-native have studied it closely. I'm curious if she did the same thing, because she sounds like she understands Standard Japanese pitch quite well.

Regarding intonation, I think the best way to study is to live in the country where you are studying. Anyway, I think it's about having a conversation consciously with a native speaker.
