There are some New Yorkers that do not toast their bagels and in fact some NY bagel shops do not even give the option to toast it when you purchase it. The main reason they do not offer to toast it is because it is often made fresh, daily. If they are fresh, it is already hot, therefore there is no need to bake/toast it. If you buy bagels that are older or buy ones at the grocery stores, however, people will toast it at home before eating it with cream cheese. I've never eaten Japanese bagels even though I've been to Japan many times. Next time I'm there, I may give it a try just to see the difference. BTW, bagels are boiled then baked to achieve their unique texture. I love to eat mine toasted with avocado slices (no cream cheese) and sprinkling the "Everything But the Bagel" seasoning on a plain bagel. Thank you for the fun video!

Thank you for tackling this topic! I have a hard time finding decent bagels in Japan, they are mostly very soft and sweet (and petite), which I find very disappointing. I miss US bagels with schmear!!!

My gosh do I miss authentic NY bagels! I also don’t agree with Kevin here- I think Japanese bagels are too soft and fluffy. I love the heavy, dense, and chewy bagels ;-)
