@@the_rachel_sam Not so; KFC-style coleslaw doesn't really smell though I think most other coleslaw does. I also think corned beef and cabbage smells delightful, but maybe the potatoes and carrots we add to it at our house, as well as all the corned beef's spices, counteracts the normally smelly nature of cooked cabbage. That said, kimchi is supposed to be fragrant, not stinky, so I wondered at first if maybe the coworker was just a bad cook... and yes, I facepalmed when it was fettuccine alfredo. Maybe she thought she should ferment that too?
@the_rachel_sam

@@NotAFanOfHandles I should have specified cooked cabbage! A lot of slaw doesn’t have a strong scent to me, either. I just mean that for cabbage in particular, when we cook it, we usually go nose-blind. It’s very different being the person cooking cabbage rolls, southern style cabbage and pork, etc., and being the person that walks into the house and smells it for the first time lol. I also don’t think it “stinks” but it’s a strong scent. Kimchi gets it scent from the fermentation of the cabbage and the various fish-based ingredients that can be used, so it’s also a strong scent.

If I had to take a guess, this crazy coworker in the first story heard about fermented foods being a staple of Korean cultural foods and equates anything she thinks she has "fermented" into "Korean" food as well.

There is no accounting for some people's taste. I once had a female coworker on evening shift who would microwave popcorn, and always burned it! I'm talking blackened and virtually charred! I asked her about it, as it really stunk up the work space. She said that's how she liked it! 🙄

Given that the description of the pasta is "curdled milk", I don't think that's it. It wasn't even Korean, much less being able to be fermented. Besides there's a lot of fermented foods in western cuisines that stink. Like saurkraut and pickled eggs.
@WR_Hart

@@impishrebel5969 sure, but if we are talking about someone this delusional, I don't know how else to explain how someone rationalizes her food as "cultural" when the main thing in common is that it is rotten. I think this woman is the kind of delusional narcissist who thinks her cooking is great even though it's the exact opposite, and also is looking to get a rise out of her coworkers so she can play the race card for sympathy and attention and thus feed her narcissistic supply. The only way I can explain this is that this woman is SO EGOTISTICAL that she refuses to acknowledge how terrible her cooking is and blames everyone but herself for it, and brings in rotten food because she thinks fermented food is Korean food and fermenting food means leaving it to rot. This woman wants to appear Korean because she thinks it'll get her brownie points and make her look good, and snaps if anyone tries to challenge her ambition because of how unhinged and narcissistic she is.

Our breakroom at work was very small, only four people being able to sit at the table. The kitchen was a separate small room next to it. We often ate at our desks, although heating and eating "stinky food" was considered very bad form. Once someone nuked up some shrimp. That stank! We did have a fairly decent cafeteria in our building, where I would often eat, and sometimes I would drive to a nearby fastfood joint. So we had a lot of options. @Ikajo
@Ikajo Жыл бұрын
Adoption can cause some pretty bad mental health issues for the adoptee. Especially when they are from a different culture. It causes them to feel disassociation to their sense of self. The common advice is to help your adopted child to still feel connected to their culture. Even if they themselves don't remember it. You also have to consider that adoptees often get hit with the "you should be thankful for us/them saving you". Additionally, people who act sweet around others can be horrible human beings in private. You never know. I'm not excusing the coworker from story 1, mind. Just saying that adoption isn't always that simple and straightforward. The expectations of feeling grateful are very harmful and denies the adoptee their own feelings.

I had that issue years ago, I was an operations manager for a 3rd party logistics contractor at an IBM warehouse (basically we had our own office in their building and we shipped some of their cargo). The warehouse had a lot of Vietnamese immigrants working there. The food they ate smelled absolutely awful, almost everything heavily fermented (especially fish products), which I understand is part of their cuisine, but man, I lost a lot of weight during the time I was there, I could just walk into the break room when they were on lunch and lose my appetite instantly.

Funnily enough, I have a personal story to the rotten food story: My great-aunt (my grandma's older sister) lives alone after her husband died, and she's starting to go off the rails mentally. She's started stockpiling incredible amounts of perishable foods for some reason. She's got like 3-5 fridges filled to the brim with half-frozen, and decomposing meats, dairy, fruits, veggies etc. She complained that the fridge is broken and melting down because there's a puddle underneath it, but it's just the rotting juices of the things inside. She had accumulated like a large garbage bag worth of rotten eggs, some of which were so rotten they litterally burst, then dried out, and only the shells remained. When my grandma (her younger sister) asked her what she was planning to do with all this, and why she kept hauling back cartfuls of groceries, spending thousands of dollars, she answered she would eat it. My grandma challenged her to eat a rotting, mouldy yogurt, and she did. She's also very paranoid, no one helps her anymore, all the taxi drivers, delivery guys, government healthcare workers avoid her like the plague, because she's throwing things at them. She's also acting like a small dog who doesn't want to go to the vet, because she's scared that if she goes to the doctor, they'll rule her mentally unwell, and remove her from the home. (Mind you, she's not fully capable of taking care of herself - e.g. she doesn't bathe because she can't - and she doesn't allow anyone in her house to help). She's a hoarder, her house stinks, everyone hates her because she's a mean crazy old lady, and refuses help she actually needs and demands you help her with her crazy ideas, like asking you to drive her to shop for more food. It's a proper trainwreck, and she does everything in her power to resist every attempt to put her back on track.

First story: I'm Filipino. When I say our food is pungent, IT IS PUNGENT. I understand a lot of other people find that being asked to put away their food or eat it at a different location because it's pungent is offensive because if said maliciously, yes, it is offensive. BUT what the OP did and the way they said it in the first story is honestly so great. It was really polite. It's just natural that certain individuals are either sensitive against or aren't really used to pungent food or both. I personally wouldn't be offended if you were uncomfortable with the smell. I would've made a solution to fix the problem. But seriously why isn't that lady in the hospital for the food she makes and eats.

The guys were both hispanic, and I'm pretty sure that's the only reason they weren't fired. There were 3 other hispanics working there two, and they were the most pleasant people to work with, but those two specifically would curse in front of customers in Spanish, and the one that was married with a kid was constantly hitting on one of the female hispanic workers. Even when confronted about it by people who spoke Spanish and knew what they were saying, they just denied it. They were the absolute worst.

The first story: I've heard this one before. OP is not the butthole. Anyone who goes to the knee-jerk reaction of accusing racism because they have no other argument is just showing how insecure they are. For example, I'm gay myself. Whenever anyone has a conflict with me or a disagreement, no matter how trivial or major, I don't automatically pull the homophobia card. That would be ridiculous, right? Just like this. So it was never about racism, just slandering OP and committing libelous acts via social media because she was slighted and didn't get her way. Wow. The entitlement of some people. Some just don't have any shame. Unhinged doesn't even begin to describe this co-worker.
