11:14 In order to damp the bouncing up and down, you could probably use a PD or PID controller instead of a P controller in the altitude range where the throttle is decreased. In other words, make the throttle not only a function of altitude, but also of how quickly the altitude is increasing or decreasing.

Several years ago I (a software engineer with no aerospace engineering experience and only basic calculus knowledge) started a project to build my own flight control software in Kerbal Space Program using the kOS mod to see how fast I could learn. I got to the point where I began introducing my PID loops but I think I was trying to do too much at the same time. My goal seemed simple: given a fixed point on the ground, circle that position at a specified altitude, speed and radius, in a halo pattern, kind of like what an AC-130 gunship might do in popular video games. I tried getting the speed/throttle loop dialed in first, but had a very hard time zeroing in on the correct parameters. I learned a whole lot, but eventually got overwhelmed and put it down. More videos like this might help give me the confidence to pick that project back up and give it another, more educated try.

I tried an inverse delta wig a few years ago and had the same problems. It either plows the front or does a backflip. Built a Bixel type (the sled looking one) after that and it was so much better. Naturally stable in ground effect and in free flight. I think it's the best type of wig type for rc scales since GEVs are supposed to be naturally stable in ground effect with just airspeed to control the altitude.

You're missing one thing: gyroscope. The thing with proximity is it only measure the height but not the momentum. You hit the minimum height with already too much downward momentum, it's a bit too late. Imagine if it can start throttling as soon as it start going downward from ideal height, and otherwise.
@crationis3 жыл бұрын
Gyroscope ... You mean accelerometer ? They don't need a gyroscope nor an accelerometer... basic physics : - Position - Speed - Acceleration They have the position, a simple derivative give them the speed.. Getting the speed form acceleration is not as easy nor accurate. "Imagine if it can start throttling as soon as it start going downward from ideal height" Okay but ... they already know when it gets downard because they have the lidar. What's missing them is what is the perfect spot
@Pawel.N3 жыл бұрын
@@crationis Perfect spot is way to many milliseconds before to take an action. You have to predict, not react, in which gyroscope is better due to much lower input lag.
@crationis3 жыл бұрын
@@Pawel.N But your gyroscope is useless to predict anything with a plane flying at a constant pitch... And if there is any variation of angle, they are way to small to be measured accurately, making it imprecise and thus completely unusable if you want to integrate it to know the vertical speed

@ViiKing_3 жыл бұрын
This comes from someone who has never built a controllable flying thing in his life but I have a feeling that either decreasing the wingspan or increasing the weight would make it easier, like if you just make the wings too short to actually fly, it should still be able to use the ground effect

Using the throttle for alt control is not really the way to go. Throttle response is way too sluggish, the motors take time to spin up the props and increase thrust and the airspeed, which leads to a lag in the altitude response by the f/c and causes the aircraft to gallop. There’s no way the f/c can preemptively throttle up the motors in time for the upcoming the decrease in altitude regardless of the PID settings, it can’t see into the future, and so will always be a second or two behind the game due to the slow thrust response.

You need some derivative gain in the control loop. It will help overcome that oscillation by applying a gain to the rate of change in altitude. Also, drag is a nonlinear function of height in ground effect. So your thrust vs altitude curve needs to be the same nonlinear shape. Finally, you might need a little elevator control to add more responsiveness. Thrust is always going to lag, and lag decreases stability..
@macrumpton3 жыл бұрын
Awesome stuff! I wonder if having a rear elevator and a canard elevator linked together might work better? Another approach could be to do a heavier plane flying much faster which would be more tolerant of turbulence.
@yamanatoo3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video You are tying Throttle to Altitude. Throttle will control v-acceleration which then changes v-speed which then changes the altitude. Currently your plane will be throttling down if the altitude is high regardeless of it having positive or negative v-speed (throttle down while moving up or down just because the altitude is high). The throttle (v-acceleration) should be controlled by both the v-speed and altitude. This can be done by choosing a relation between v-speed and altitude (can be just a line going through 0 at the perfect altitude) and then controling the throttle to push points that are out of this line back on the line.
