Just to explain to folk before someone says "Why did they build a statue it's only $170": $170 back in 1847 would be worth around $5,000 today.

It was also, as stated, when the Choctaw tribe had also just gone through their worst times, the trail of tears. They had just been through hell and yet still thought enough of some European strangers and their struggles to donate some of what meager amounts they had. That statue isn’t the only thing saying the Irish haven’t forgotten. I know that many people have pointed out the money the Irish donated to the Choctaw nation to alleviate COVID stresses, but a little lesser known fact is that if someone of the Choctaw nation wanted to go to a higher education, with proper proof, a person of the Choctaw tribe gets into the University College of Cork, no tuition, and €10,000 in living expenses paid. And in a way, it makes sense. The Irish are still somewhat feeling the after effects of the famine, with their numbers nowhere near what they were before it.

In addition to the statue in Cork, at the start of the pandemic when the Choctaw tribe was being hit hard by covid, so the Irish (spearheaded by Jacksepticeye) raised almost $2,000,000 in relief aid for the Choctaw, and other native American tribes affected by covid. We are taught about the Choctaw tribe aiding us during the famine in Ireland in school. So most of us who donated still consider this debt to not be repaid on our part, and probably never will
@SoulDevoured

I assume you're from Ireland? That's cool. All we're really taught in America is how the English and then American government fought and abused native Americans. I'd say the most positive thing we're taught is Thanksgiving (which is more myth than history) and how reservations are sovereign. The internet has taught me more about native Americans than 12 years of school did. And I, like many Americans, have relatively recent native American ancestors. It seems to me that Ireland has a healthier outlook on heritage and history. From the little I know... Thanks to the internet again.
@SPKotN
@SPKotN 2 жыл бұрын
@@SoulDevoured I am, we're taught about general world history, alongside our own (the good, bad, and ugly), from like 7-8 until 16 years old. From then, we can drop history, in which those modules for our last years of school get even more specific, and even more so in College/University for the first, and sometimes second years. We're taught to appreciate, learn from, and take pride in our history, because it shaped our culture we have today. We're taught general world history so we can see how other cultures have grown while ours stagnated under British occupation, as well as have at least a basic understanding of the world's differences. It always makes me sad to hear people from different countries not learning everything about their history (England, and the USA are among the top reasons I constantly say "How do you not know this?"). So many problems could be avoided later in people's lives if school curriculum all over the world trusted that teenagers/young adults could handle the truth about all of their countries history, no matter how dark.

It’s just like “You want this thing? Here’s this thing.” And that’s it. I'm a massive nerd about spacesuits, so I'll add some extra context: the ACES suit is not actually functional in space, it will overheat. It is intended to keep the crew alive in the event of a cabin depressurization. It was adopted in the aftermath of the Columbia disaster. The EMU suit, which is quite a lot older, is more functional, allowing crew to be safe outside of the craft. It is not used inside the shuttle because it is incredibly bulky and heavy. In addition to its large backpack, it consists of a HUT (hard upper torso), helmet, pants, and gloves. It takes a very long time to out on, and is too big to be effective in such an enclosed space. ACES is a fully flexible bodysuit, and a lot smaller and lighter. It is the predecessor to the new and upcoming OCSS (Orion Crew Survival System) which will be used during launch of the SLS rocket and Orion Crew craft. The EMU is the predecessor to the still experimental xEMU, or eXploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit. It has enhanced flexibility and mobility, and will hopefully allow personnel to move around freely on the lunar surface, albeit in a hunched over position.

By using colors, you can make a room smaller with dark hues or a room much larger with light hues. “They do have something in North Dakota! Snow!” As a North Dakotan I can say yes. In my city Fargo, the biggest in the state with about 127,000 people, we had our last snow storm in mid- April. Sometimes we can even have snow into May and June. Fun fact that huge snow storm had lasting affects that flooded and refertilized the already glacier fertile land of the state. Today we have not had as bad of floods as that year but we still have floods especially from the Red River which is one of the only rivers that flow North. This is the river that is the border line between North Dakota and Minnesota as well.

My parents talk about winters in the 1960s. Leaving home from a 2nd story window was not an isolated thing and the climate becoming too cold to farm there was a real concern at the time. My grandfather raised the bucket on the tractor before one blizzard, in case they needed to crank start it. After the blizzard, the only way they found the tractor was from the raised bucket poking out of the snow.

Knowing that blobfish actually look like... *fish* makes me so sad that everyone only knows them as sad, pink blobs. Like, I just looked up blobfish and out of the first three rows, 19 pics, 7 show the blowfish as it looks in the water and 3 of those 7 also show the damaged blob (and the next 2 rows, an additional 10 pics, has _two_ blobfish underwater).

I actually happen to live fairly close to the monument at 6:05 but I never actually knew what it was for. Now that I do I appreciate it even more. Our people were in serious need and for them to do that purely through the kindness of their hearts makes me think just how great they are. Even all this time later I think I speak for all of us when I say we are still very grateful.

The story of Jim Thorpe reminded me of the story of Emil Zátopek, a Czechoslovakian athlete, who ran the marathon at the Helsinki olympics and won gold, despite it being his first ever olympic marathon. He also won two other gold medals in a 10000 and 5000 meter races, the only time that ANYONE won those three gold medals at once. His strategy to win was to run alongside the first place runner, Jim Peterson (UK), and, 15 km into the race, asked him what does Jim think about the race. Jim, wanting to derail Emil, told him that 'The tempo is slow' despite the fact that he was starting to get tired and wouldn't finish the race. Emil took Jim's words and went on to run faster and win. In the second half of the marathon, he talked with the photographs, talking about how boring the race was. His wife Dana, after he got his first gold at the Helsinki olympics, in the 5km run, took his gold medal and proceeded to throw the spear 50 meters, shattering the world record at the time.

4:11 Having hands with 6 fingers is actually a dominant trait, but they usually don't work or are in the way so most of them get clipped off. That doesn't mean that most people are born with 6 fingers, but it's still more common than you'd think, with about 1/1000 people born with polydactyly in the general population.

First off this vid has regained my faith in humanity, second off I’ve always wondered how much longer it would take to invent things if the original inventor wasn’t alive, or just didn’t do it. Like how long would it take Facebook to come around if there was no zucc. Someone has to do it eventually right, even if years and decades later it had to be done eventually if it’s important enough since now days social media is undoubtedly necessary in our lives. You’d find it hard to never use some form of social media(including texting)
