R.E.M. was really incredible in their prime. They literally made 10 or so near-perfect records in a row and always have conducted themselves with dignity.

Except for that time Peter buck was on a flight and pissed in the galley...lol. But hey, everyone should be able to have 1 rock star moment, right?

That bridge ... damn ... so beautiful and Mike Mill's counter vocal ... such a beautiful song.
@shawnuel28 күн бұрын
I went back and forth every other week in the late '80's on whether "Fall On Me" or "Don't Dream It's Over" were the greatest rock ballad's ever. Then, in '91, Neil Finn wrote "Fall At Your Feet" and added to the conflict. Jules Shear's "If We Never Meet Again" gets some of my votes as well. But "Fall On Me" was my first 'most beautiful ballad ever.'

Agreed, Mike mills backing vocals are so much of what is REM
@patriciaguth6882 Жыл бұрын
Stipe is watching Mills to make sure his timing is on target to come back into his own vocals. Lots of singers do that when singing live. Timing is everything in a live performance.

Mike Mills harmonies are legendary, he's much more than a backing singer,a very talented musician who wrote night swimming,he was dabbling on the piano one afternoon and started playing it,Peter Buck walked into the room and it was his first time to hear it and he said he just stood at the back of the room In total awe and disbelief In what he was hearing,every member of this band are class acts,I hope they will go on tour again,the eagles said when hell freezes over,here's hoping,greetings from Ireland.

I'm not a scholar of music, but it seems that these guys developed a style of moving up and down scales (arpegylation?) that transcended genres. Even today, when I find myself liking a song, the most obvious reason is that it traces back to REM, or maybe Kansas.
@MaurizioMusic Жыл бұрын
Yeap - they had a droning open string - chimney jangly sound that literally set the tone for many bands to come in the late 80s and 90s. And indeed the arpeggiation is what gives the songs a both melodic and dissonant sound - a sort of tension and release. This band is a lesson on how to write great pop songs. Even if an artists style is different - there is lots to learn from the REM catalog for sure. Berry is also one of the best rock drummers ever in my humble opinion.
