I miss there being quality massive bands like these. Today it’s all about solo stars with big production numbers. No more do we get groups of musicians with original ideas. No more outsiders, weirdos and people with poetic souls.

These guys are the absolute pinnacle of what music should be. They have brought so much joy to my life growing up (I'm almost 33). They never EVER change the way the song is, but keep it as close to the record as possible. Michael Stipe and Mike Mills are honestly two of the greatest vocalists in history in my opinion. Today's artists are so focused on auto tune and breakup songs or singing about getting off guts on the weekends to even remotely come close about selling great music. R.E.M, thank you so so much from the very bottom of our hearts for bringing us such incredible music. We love you guys so much.

Mills is so ridiculously fire on the vocals it’s insane. Makes the atmosphere of the live performance so grounded (and sounds like the album) yet spontaneous..feeding off of Stipes performative tendencies that are so crucial to this band.

@@-Only.Facts- Something to do with Andy Kaufman, I'm sure. However Stype's cryptic songwriting is all the more beautiful and powerful because you likely *don't* know precisely what it means.
@IndoorHydroponix2 жыл бұрын
Kaufman didn’t believe in science or religion. He thought it was all just magic. Read the verses for what they are. The song, though beautiful, is incredibly tragic. It’s about a man losing his grip in front of the world. And at the end of his life, he fell for the magic…

I'm listening to this song, once again, in 2022 and it is such a remarkable piece. It works as a piece of music. Stipe obviously loves performing it. It's great theater. But it does something even more elusive. I was so lucky to see Andy Kaufman live, when I was about 13 and again when I was 15 years old. Even today, I would have a hard time describing what I saw -- he would come out as one character, leave, and then perform as a second character, commenting on the first character. And on and on. And yet Michael Stipe writes this gorgeous song that really captures the vibe of Andy, and how you never really knew what was real, what wasn't, and then it all vanished. That's hard to do, but it's beautiful, and it's art. If you believe.
@karenwebster24652 жыл бұрын
What Andy DID as an actor...for those ready to awaken to see is he played that role. The point of the song is nothing is what you think it is. It's starting to come to light now. We are a society that has been asleep for generations. By design. "Nothing IS cool." People are missing the point. The message of the song is cryptic unless you really are awake to the lies we've been told The irony!
@vinnytesla9731 Жыл бұрын
@@karenwebster2465 bingo! ,..... folks getting too emo to realize the logic of the song - the reality we're fed is a bunch of crap and smokescreen, and we're just believing anything they throw at us ........ we're simply being entertained into apathy ....... just as Andy Kaufman played us all .... he was a reflection of it - a comedic talent who would embarrass himself in public appearances in ways that would make people feel cringy awkward and bad for him, but he was actually an actor playing a role at all times ... we were all just being entertained .... it took the world too long to catch on to it - and then they had no idea what was an act and what was real .... by the time the world caught on to the fact that this guy was actually pulling off a genius act and playing us all for a fool, he was dead and gone ... by the time we all realize that the powers-that-be are pulling off an act of 'reality' over us, we may be the same
