So I told her I wanted a Walkman to listen to automatic for the people , while I painted the duplex , that was my payment a Sony Walkman to listen to automatic for the people. My boyfriend , my soul mate, passed away 6 months ago unbelievably suddenly. It’s insane that someone can walk out the door one morning, and you’ll never see them again. He loved this song. He had eclectic music taste and played R.E.M. a lot. He loved this song. My favorite memories are of him and I sitting and listening to music and talking. I don’t myself connecting with many people to be honest. He and I could talk about anything for hours, even after 13 years together. This is the first time I’ve listened to this song since it happened.

As a Muslim from the Middle East, it is through the brilliantly crafted songs of R.E.M that I first became exposed to the greatness of Western culture. R.E.M songs remind me of the happy times of my childhood when optimism ruled the day. Things have changed for the worse since then, but I will always have R.E.M hits to fall back on. REM is arguably one of thee best alternative bands ever. In some circles they are considered the U.S version of The Smiths, even though the Smiths were considered the most successful Indie band. REM was just as good and been doing it for much longer. They have a great body of work and still is relevant today.

This was the first video clip I watched in my life. I remember as a child going through my father's things and he had a videotape that said "MTV best clips". I put it on the video player and was transfixed watching a whole new world in front of my eyes. He recorded videos directly from the TV broadcast. Pure nostalgia.

Said it once and will repeat a thousand times.........Michael Stipe's voice is truly an instrument.....mesmerizing, hypnotic, butter, sugar and all things good pouring out of his vocal chords combined with emotion expressed with every hand and body movement.......He and Gord Downie are so much alike with their moves. Love them both

A really haunting song and no one finds nuances to a note like Michael Stipe. The freedom of crowd surfing combined with lyrics telling us to be free is brilliant for this video. It is one of my favorites from REM.

It would be interesting to hear Stipe's thoughts on those lyrics. To me it seems to suggest the kids are not free, but are given the illusion of freedom. Especially in the line - "Maybe I'll ride, maybe you walk, maybe I drive to get off, baby." In other words those really driving the direction of the world get off on their power over others, while kids are encouraged to be rebellious and rock n roll and feel free as long as they don't get in the way of the drivers.

As an Indian I can safely say this is underrated. Many of my peers grew up listening to Pink Floyd, for example, and are familiar with Comfortably Numb, High Hopes, etc. But mention this song and you are likely to get blank stares. Undoubtedly, as you say, one of the greatest songs in the history of music.
