My 13th birthday gift from my dad was a Sony walkman and the 'Automatic for the People' album. Nothing hit different like drifting off to sleep with that playing on my walkman.

I painted a duplex , my mom got screwed over by some painters , they took the payment and ran . So I told her I wanted a Walkman to listen to automatic for the people , while I painted the duplex , that was my payment a Sony Walkman to listen to automatic for the people. There was a time I was a good son . It was funny my son Joey helped me paint the house like 20 years later getting it ready for gram to sell it . Another free paint job .

My boyfriend , my soul mate, passed away 6 months ago unbelievably suddenly. It’s insane that someone can walk out the door one morning, and you’ll never see them again. He loved this song. He had eclectic music taste and played R.E.M. a lot. He loved this song. My favorite memories are of him and I sitting and listening to music and talking. I don’t myself connecting with many people to be honest. He and I could talk about anything for hours, even after 13 years together. This is the first time I’ve listened to this song since it happened.

As a Muslim from the Middle East, it is through the brilliantly crafted songs of R.E.M that I first became exposed to the greatness of Western culture. R.E.M songs remind me of the happy times of my childhood when optimism ruled the day. Things have changed for the worse since then, but I will always have R.E.M hits to fall back on. This Song came out during a VERY TUMULTUOUS Time. Marital Breakdown, Family Deaths, etc. This song gave Me a sense of structure, strength. Michael Stipe has the Ability to project Strong Emotions with His Voice. REM has and does still evoke strong emotions within me. This Song and Everybody Cries, always give Me goosebumps. 👍🏼

Said it once and will repeat a thousand times.........Michael Stipe's voice is truly an instrument.....mesmerizing, hypnotic, butter, sugar and all things good pouring out of his vocal chords combined with emotion expressed with every hand and body movement.......He and Gord Downie are so much alike with their moves. Love them both

A really haunting song and no one finds nuances to a note like Michael Stipe. The freedom of crowd surfing combined with lyrics telling us to be free is brilliant for this video. It is one of my favorites from REM.

It would be interesting to hear Stipe's thoughts on those lyrics. To me it seems to suggest the kids are not free, but are given the illusion of freedom. Especially in the line - "Maybe I'll ride, maybe you walk, maybe I drive to get off, baby." In other words those really driving the direction of the world get off on their power over others, while kids are encouraged to be rebellious and rock n roll and feel free as long as they don't get in the way of the drivers.

R.E.M's songs appear to grow with me. While these songs meant various things to me when I was younger, they signify something new now that I'm 40. It's like a philosophy book that delves deeper and deeper.

With some friends we had a band in the high school back in the 1993, and when we played this song in front of the whole school mates and teachers, their reaction was just to stare with open moutnts during the performance and all steyed quiet and remeined silent for a few minutes after that. I love my memories with R.E.M. a lot.
@sea80vicvan2 жыл бұрын
The first song I heard off Automatic For The People, and for me one of their best songs. Everything meshes together so well, from Michael's lyrics and vocals to Peter, Mike and Bill's instrumentals to John Paul Jones' magisterial string arrangement (the unsung genius in Led Zeppelin). I know Everybody Hurts and Man On The Moon are the songs usually referenced when speaking of Automatic, but this set the overall mood and tone of that record much better. A big part of the sound of 1992.
