I saw REM in Serbia, they start the anti American rant and people were quiet. He voted for Clinton, the president that bombed Serbia, Clinton sided with NATO and bombed a city full of civilians. Then has the audacity to offer an apology for a president that he voted for. Michael Stipe doesn't like any politics that he can't dictate. Way before Trump,way before Obama. He protest for the sake of looking involved. Great band but I personally don't pay to hear the people talk bullshit politics. He hates any administration that he doesn't agree with. Struggling, these two have more money than the city they live in and the are pretentious pricks.

I stay outside of political tribalism, so I don't have a dog in the fight. That said, there is will be "bias" one way or another in certain mediums or social circles. As I say, the reason you don't see many conservative in the arts is the same reason you don't see many liberal truck drivers or oil rig workers. Studies increasingly indicate people tend toward a "liberal" or "conservative" thought process by nature -- in other words, differences in brain function. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with either -- we need both, and ideally, they compliment one another. We need liberal minds to drive things forward, and conservative minds to keep them stable. But, sadly, contemporary society has politicized this, and split us into political tribes. Those are my thoughts.

"That said, there is will be "bias" one way or another in certain mediums or social circles."LOL. Yes, and the "bias" lib media prevents or twists what the right says or does. No matter what they do/say, the media labels it racist, homophobic, misogynistic etc, even when it clearly isn't. It's just a quick and easy way for the libs to silence those who think or act differently than themselves. But please don't think it's "one way or another" with both sides.

It amazes me how many people in here claim to be fans, yet seem so surprised by REM's political stance. If you know anything about this band at all, you'd know they'd never support a spiteful, narcissistic man-baby like Trump. Perhaps those of you upset by this revelation and in need of musicians whose politics match yours should go and watch some Ted Nugent videos instead.
@johnmac916 жыл бұрын
I'm slightly right of center but was a big fan of REM. Conversely, I'm not a fan of Ted Nugent simply because I don't like his music. Generally speaking I try not to consider an artist's political leanings. This is mainly for pragmatic reasons. I mean realistically, since most of Hollywood and the music industry is liberal, so for me to boycott their work would mean never listening to music or going to the movies again. The only time it bothers me is when the artist lets the political nonsense overshadow their music (or film, etc.). For example, if I'm paying $100 or more for a concert ticket, I want to listen to music - i don't want to hear the musicians lecturing me from the stage. that's one thing i love about Willie Nelson. I love his music, and make it a point to go see him whenever he comes to Boston, and one thing I'll say is that even though he is a liberal, in the dozens of times I've seen him in concert, I have never heard him interject his politics into his show.

I love REM’s music. I disagree with their political views. Assuming their beliefs are genuine, I respect their right to express them, just as I respect the rights of those whose views are considered politically incorrect or unpopular. REM is a pop band so it stands to reason that they are expected to promulgate the pop narrative; lest they be de-platformed, blacklisted, and silenced like other celebrities who dared to question the establishment’s official narrative. It’s extremely risky to oppose the ruling class… particularly for entertainers. How many jester’s in history have had their head’s removed for offending the king? Can you imagine what would have happened to REM had they publicly opposed the Democrat Party? REM ain’t stupid; they know their place in the pecking order.

Well $80Million can rather isolate an ego and delude your believing that your opinion matters more than most, or at the very least, influences. It only influences the weak. Js

@@slydale agree, and as well he's always been a big egotist from jump street

Actors and bands are entertainment. That's what draws your fans, your political views we don't want to hear unless we seek you out one to one. Your job is entertaining. Ron White lost me when he started making political statements, I came for comedy and not politics.

America is a republic, not a democracy. Sorry you don't like low unemployment for blacks and latinos, lower taxes etc. etc I wasn't aware that REM was racist against seeing blacks and latinos move forward in life

As if the side they are pandering to isn't in control of just about everything. Brexit baby. Now. God bless the British people for telling these idiots to shove it.

Yes. This. We simply must rise and resist. It’s become a life and death struggle, particularly for historically marginalized social groups. The time is now.

Thank you, Michael & Mike! Love you guys, still fighting the good fight!! I am forever grateful for your music, and for giving some volume to our voices as they sometimes grow weary YAWPING in silence. Thank you for talking about compassion, with politics.

Has beens trying to push politics on people who could care less. Frankly they seem kind of pathetic to me now

Rock on R.E.M., it's a pity your heyday was in the 80s/90s and not now. Where are the political bands now who try and and make people WAKE UP to what's going on? Don't bother replying that music stars should stick to music, Trump is a TV star who didn't stick to TV.
@danielrankin64137 жыл бұрын
Maturin he should’ve stuck to tv and not destroy a country in a year
@JarOfRats6 жыл бұрын
Maturin, anyone who needs a band to "wake up" to what the current events are is a simplistic fool, beyond redemption.

Music has always reflected a culture, a nation, the politics of the day......who is doing that now in popular music? Ed Sheeran? Stan Smith?
@paulagwhyte17207 жыл бұрын
Michael Stipe you remind me so much of Gord Downie, I wonder if you ever met?! He was a Canadian rock hero. He died this year, not so very long ago. He is greatly missed. He was only 52. I love you guys, REM.

I kind of doubt Stipe is reading the comment section of videos, babe.

You, considering your comment was directly addressing Stipe. And, again, he'll never see it.
@paulagwhyte17206 жыл бұрын
JarOfRats: A lot of us do that, we don't really mean it that way. Lighten up. I also wrote, "I love you guys, REM." You gonna jump on that too? You can. ;) Whomever the fack wants to read it or comment can and will.
