Last story: co-worker had an affair with a dying woman's husband, played the trusting friend to this poor woman, knowing what she was doing was wrong and never gave it a second thought. She thought she had played the game correctly, got the man she wanted and life was going to be good. But the husband was even more f'ed up than she was, and just let her believe that she was the problem with not getting pregnant. Depending on the actual ages, I would give the step mum some slack. Not much but she was obviously targeted by OP’s dad before the affair actually began. It looks like he wanted someone to control. Had OP’s mum not died, he would have eventually targeted the same girl or another much younger one and probably kept the affair going for years while promising to divorce his wife “soon”. The step mum sucks sure but she was lied to just as much as anyone else. That dad can rot and if there was any justice he’ll die alone on far more pain than OP’s mum did.

I was employed by an HOA as a foreman gardener. One day whilst i was cutting one of our larger lawns, (lost 23 trees on it from the Gale of 1987 UK), I had paused the ride on mower when a front door opened and a dog came out on an exstendable leash, squatted on the lawn i hadn't cut yet and left an enormous doggy crap, then went back indoors and the door closed. I unseen, moved that crap onto the front doorstep and carried on cutting. A little while later the secretary of the HOA came out and stood right in that crap. I could hear the shrieks from where i was waiting behind some bushes. I never laughed so hard at work before or since.

When we looked at buying a house almost 30 years ago we looked at a house with an HOA. When reading through the rules we saw that you were not allowed more than 2 pets including dogs, cats, hamsters and FISH. A limit on fish was just crazy to us. If they were that strict, we wanted nothing to do with it.

We live in a hoa neighborhood, but they really don't care about anything. In a good way. It's $ 20 annually. They keep up with the roads and everything, but they don't really care about useless things. Our truck was broken down and with this economy, we couldn't afford to fix it. So it sat in our drive way for almost 3 years until I finally was able to convince my husband to sell it. They never said anything. Our lawn mower broke down and we couldn't get the part in right away. Our yard was looking like a jungle. Again, they never said anything. They don't care what you do. They just use the 20 bucks for street repairs and whatever hoa's normally use it on. It's the most chill hoa I have ever heard of.

Where I live, HOAs aren't a thing, as far as I know. So, I have lots of questions. Foremost: HOAs being, essentially, groups of private citizens, why is road maintenance a responsibility of a group of private citizens? Shouldn't that be a responsibility of the municipal/state government? I'm Canadian. Here, road maintenance is a government responsibility, either municipal or provincial.

Unfortunately we do pay state taxes for maintenance of roads and it seriously takes forever for the state to fix even a pothole and if you damage your vehicle with said pothole, you're responsible for the repairs on your own car. HOAs, ah, yes... I once was sitting at my dining room table only to realize there was a man with a loud leaf blower ON MY FRONT PORCH. Turns out, the HOA sent in the landscaping company to clear all the fallen leaves that homeowners had ignored or not "properly" raked up. Problem #1: I had used my own leaf blower to completely clear my yard AND the public areas around it not once, but twice earlier in the fall. Problem #2: The HOA doesn't have the right to have their contractors come onto private property like that. And... Problem #3: This was the middle of a very cold February, and any leaves I might have missed at some point were HIDDEN UNDER ALMOST 3 INCHES OF SNOW. I called the management office and told the secretary what was going on. She put me on hold for 7-8 minutes but just before she got back on the line, the guy with the blower disappeared. She had very little to say about the HOA that was good, and promised me the management company would make sure that didn't happen again. It's been over a decade, so she was true to her word... And in the meantime, one of my neighbors actually got himself onto the HOA board because, to use his own words, "At least now there will be one functioning brain among all of them."

Many years ago, we rented a house almost directly across the street from an Elementary school. My daughter, having a profound developmental disorder, was picked up by a school bus each workday when school was in session, by one with a wheelchair lift to easily load her onboard. Most days, thankfully most days, the bus didn't arrive at the same time as when the idiot parents were arriving at the school to pick up or drop off their offspring. Still, it did happen at least once per week. My goodness, the honking and the swearing that would ensue! I found out, eventually, there actually was a city ordinance regarding foul mouth language usage within school zones during those "active" times of day. (Don't ask me if this law violates Freedom of Speech, as I never learned that part of it!) When I called our local police on their non-emergency line to inquire about this law, they asked me not only exactly where I lived but also how bad the language got. For the next 2 years, not every day but at least 2 to 3 times per week a patrol car would follow her bus down the street happily writing citations right and left! What I quickly found out was that the school had been complaining for years about reckless driving by these parents, who didn't seem to care about the safety of the other kids as they'd peel out of there. The bus - for them - made them slow down and/or stop, often long enough so they'd get handed a wad of citations. Neither the cops or the school was happy when we moved away, as it apparently didn't take long for those idiots to start driving recklessly again.

That last story: you know the sad part is that her father didn’t care about the mistress at all and only thought about himself. He thought with his little brain when her mother got sick but he didn’t use his noggin to let the co-worker mistress know at the start of the relationship that he had a vasectomy and that he wasn’t reversing it. The second story brings us back to the history of the birth of HOAs. After WWII lots of veterans bought homes with thier GI bill benifits. Suburbs were springing up all over the place. So white people decided to get together and form neighborhood covenants that vowed to never sell thier homes to black families. Those covenants eventually evolved into HOAs because they wanted to create restricted swimming pools, playgrounds, etc. since public facilities were becoming intergrated. With a beginning like that, it's no wonder that HOAs are as bad as they are.

I'm glad that they're largely illegal on this side of the world. Everything that a HOA might regulate is the province of local government instead. There's something similar to an HOA for what the USA calls apartments ("flats"), but their powers are strictly limited. That doesn't stop some boards from attempting to overstep their authority, but they generally get slapped down by government regulators fairly quickly once their overstep is reported.

We've always been friends with our neighbours, from the elderly (early 70s) German couple we spent heaps of time with in our very early 20s, to the older Italian couple - him & I would waste a lot of time gasbagging over the fence! Then we had a guy in his early 30s who was a bit mentally slow but an absolute honey & was really friendly & always helpful & quite protective of his neighbourhood friends! Story 4: Okay - "the audacity of that woman". She behaved despicably. But it was OP's father who decided to handle his emotions while his wife was dying by indulging in his lust and also deceiving the woman with whom he was cheating on his dying wife as well as his daughter. He could have waited a short but decent interval after his wife's death and then introduced his girlfriend.

Story 4: OP has the gift of karmic timing. If she'd released the information any earlier, only one of them would have been fully punished for their affair. Coworker also had the option to do a fertility check up at any time for both of them, at which time the vasectomy would have been brought up. Honestly just perfect and the only thing that would have made it better is if Coworker had gotten pregnant and tried passing it off as the dad's.

Final story: OP shouldn’t feel ashamed. On the other hand I do feel a little sorry for the step mum but that’s all on the father. That affair didn’t come out of nowhere and he’d obviously been targeting her before OP’s mum got diagnosed. While the ages weren’t clear, with the step mum being a only few years older than OP, it’s clear the dad intentionally targeted someone young and possibly quite impressionable. Here’s hoping the dad does alone and while this may sound cruel, succumbs to something worse than the mum.

I'm part of a good HOA. There are only four owners involved in the same building. But I feel as lucky as I can be to have trustworthy, honest, considerate HOA partners. It can get very bad indeed. If it's done right, you benefit and help each other. If it's done wrong, cue the lawyers.

I am so happy and glad that HOA's don't exist in Australia. The closet thing we have are Body Corporates or Strata's (depending on the state you live) and they're regulated by a company, not the people who own the property and they're for townhouses, units or apartments - not free standing houses

HOAs are designed to protect developers and have too much power. They should be legally required to be disbanded after the last house in the project is sold. At that point, the developer has made their profits and the purpose is served.

The last story OP played it well playing the long game. She got the revenge for herself and mom on her father for his infidelity while they were both suffering. Now he can deal with loss like he made everyone else deal with, the a-hole. The home-wrecker also got wrecked as well.

Last story: I'm not sure if it's really possible, but it would have been nice if OP could have twisted the knife even more. Admittedly, I hold betrayers in unusually low regards. They're not quite as low as woodchipper food, but they're not a hell of a lot better in my eyes.

The only reason i would care about sidewalk overhang is it can block wheelchairs and strollers. As long as the sidewalk is wide enough to provide lots of clearence with a bike overhanging then its not a big deal. Block the way for our wheeled neighbors? Please move it a bit closer to your garage.

Disabled parking story: Yes, the neighbor was definitely being a jerk. He had no reason to park in the disabled pick-up spot, he was looking to cause issues by being a bully. It backfired and cost him to the tune of at least $90,700 plus a tire. Oops! HOA vs RV story: This is why my one ironclad rule to my realtor when looking for a home was: "NO HOAs!" Too bad your lawyer didn't demand the HOA turn over its books to account for its money. That could have gotten interesting. Vasectomy story: OP, there's no right or wrong answer to this. Was it wrong to hold back the info your father didn't give coworker? Maybe. But she also agreed to have an affair with a married man and KNEW his wife was dying, using that fact to justify the affair. IMO, she reaped what she sowed and so did your father, who is the real villain of the story.

I was actually disappointed by the last story. I wanted OP to laugh at the crying AP's face and let her know that she (?) maliciously kept the secret on purpose for all those years. I wanted the last call with her (?) dad to be more satisfying as well. I wish she had let him know what she really thought of him for what he did to the mom, and that she broke up their marriage on purpose.

Last story: My life was destroyed by the woman I loved more than life itself cheating on me with multiple partners, so my tolerance for cheaters is significantly lower than zero. Yes, it would have been merciful to inform the coworker of dad's vasectomy years earlier so she could possible have kids, but a woman who knowingly worked to wreck a marriage while the wife was on her deathbed deserves much worse than what OP did. Add in that she treated OP like garbage, and she should have had to suffer way worse. She's lucky OP's vindictiveness was as gentle as it was.

Story 2 and 3: I guess Mr. Entitled Neighbor and HOA Karen learned the hardest lesson of all, that "teaching people a lesson will end up making YOU learn a lesson yourself." And, as for the Sh*tty Neighbor in Story 3, "if he can watch over OP, OP can also watch over him."
