The thing that many folk don't realise is that young kids have absolutely no interest in nudes or even people making out. So the idea that they are somehow being traumatised by seeing anything is complete nonsense. I remember when mine were young and for some reason they were up late and we were watching a film (movie to you USA folks) on TV. Unexpectedly, there was sex scene in the film (no it wasn't that sort of film - it was just central to the plot): Kid: "What are they doing?" Me: "Oh, they're just having a cuddle." Kid: "Why have they taken their clothes off?" Me: "I don't know - maybe they're too hot." No response from kid who, satisfied with my answers, just returned to playing with her toys.

Hum... you don't understand her : for her, nursing room mean nothing... because.. you know... nursing room in public space just exist for the last 20 years and law for breast feeding in public has just been new for the last 20 years too... And actually, for everybody it should just be that when we are not in an intimate/flirting situation. And if you remember the Temberlake & Janet Jackson superball incident, some stats came out after that. The US population was so offended and was almost rioting : they are also the biggest consumer of adult content ($/person or view time/person; I don't remember)! I can understand this inconfort when you're very young, having very high hormone and not knowing what to do with it and you see skin and stuff... but pass a certain point in your life, you shouldn't be anymore and being a mom is normally a point where you had open your legs to a lot of doctor, at least one man and probably show most of your body to some other mom, nurse & doctors for different reasons. But I guess, in this story, it's all about "you gonna give a hard one to a 5 y old!" (and should be had for precision : "that shouldn't be here in the first place").

@@sakilynn it reminds me of a story a friend of mine told me. This was back in the late 1980’s. He and another guy was in Knoxville TN. They were looking for somewhere to go drinking. Somehow they found a place called the carousel. They went in my friend looked around he realized it was a gay bar. He was okay he just wanted a few refreshments. His buddy did figure it so fast. Another patron came up and sit down making small talk. One thing lead to another the patron ask the guy if he wanted to dance and put his hand on the guys knee. The guy went ballistic. The manager came over. The guy explained the patron was coming on to him and was acting like a F@gg0t. The manger explained this is a gay bar. It ended up with Knoxvilles finest escorting my friend and his buddy out. The cop explained if you don’t want a gay man coming onto you. Then you need to avoid going to gay bars. That is what they do in there. My buddy said he was about ready to wet his pants trying not to burst out laughing.

My youngest, my daughter never let me cover her. She would always knock off the blanket or cry until I took it off. My son was 3 when his sister was born. Breastfed right in front of him. People who complain about moms breastfeeding in public need to get a life and mind their own business. I once sat on a public bench in the middle of a busy fair breastfeeding my daughter. About 50 people passed me. No one cared. I got the occasional glance but that’s it. My husband is an elementary school music teacher and with our first I decided not to breastfeed in front of his students. Second child, he told me to go on ahead. All the parents know we recently had a baby. If they can’t tell the difference between exposing and breastfeeding they need a major education.

Where I live, I've seen people breastfeeding in cafes, in food halls, on a bench outside and on a bus. Except for the bus, no-one said anything, and the bus driver shutdown the person having a go at the breastfeeding mum on the bus, he was informed that if he didn't like it, the driver could stop the bus and he could get off right there, the guy shut up.

Story 3: That happened to me. I was shopping in a department store that did not have a special room for mothers to nurse their babies. It was so quiet in the store that I decided to feed my son in a dressing room. When I was done, the sweet young thing manning that area told me that breastfeeding was disgusting and I should have gone to the bathroom to do it. I had her put back the clothes I had planned to buy and never shopped there again. Also hoped that someday she might find herself in a similar situation. Story 5: That's why people don't take allergies seriously and disbelieve someone who tells them they have food allergies. When they see idiots who claim to be "deathly allergic" to something but scarf down something containing that very ingredient, they think everyone is faking.

The dressing room is at least somewhat sanitary. My work had no sort of facility, so I had to pump in a bathroom stall. I had to be super careful to avoid things getting contaminated. Even so, it's amazing my baby didn't get sick from the "food" being prepared in those conditions. Think about it - would you be ok with someone prepping a plate of food in a bathroom stall, then giving it to you? Would you take your lunch to a bathroom to eat it? Probably not. Why do people think, then, that it's ok to ask nursing/pumping mothers to use a bathroom for that? (Sorry. It's been a long time, and I'm still steamed about that. Story 2. My dad had something like this happen to him at a wally world. He was a double amputee due to diabetes so he had the handicapped plate on his truck. But this one tried to get physical and failed. So did the son. My dad stoped both. In the end both got assault charges and it was found out both were shoplifting too. So they also got a a permanent ban from wally world. Justice served.

Story 4: It's a good thing that Tim is apparently well enough off that he's able to remain calm and present himself as a reasonable person and present his side of things in situations like that. Many homeless people aren't so lucky, and actually suffer from mental problems, social anxiety, PTSD, or just the cumulative stresses of living on the streets for years, which can make them behave in ways that seem "weird" to other people, even when they actually are entirely harmless and mean well, and because of this, they usually don't get the benefit of the doubt that they really deserve. If this had been anybody else, that karen might well have gotten her way and nobody would have even batted an eye...

A neighbor across the street (the OP of the story), had a friend who was a cop, and when he heard of this woman yelling at people and causing a fuss, he decided to park his personal car there. When the lady tried to yell at him, he wanted to know why she hadn’t shoveled the snow on the sidewalk and fix it. That if she did own the sidewalk and that strip of street, he’d have to cite her for failing to upkeep it. By the time he was done, she’d relented and admitted she didn’t own it. And while she never ran out to stop anyone from parking there again, she did give death stares from her window anytime someone did park there. 😂🤣😂🤣

Story 5: If I were the server in that situation I would have immediately reported it to my supervisor, and if I were the manager in that situation I _absolutely would not_ have allowed her to order that dessert. She has already informed the restaurant that she "could die" if she consumes an ingredient which is known to be in that dessert (and cannot be removed). It doesn't matter what she says after that point, serving that to her would be a *huge legal liability* because there is no way to know for certain which of her conflicting statements is actually the wrong one, and if it turns out she does actually have a serious allergy, then they have knowingly served her something that could have killed her, which makes them potentially liable for a lot of damages. But to be honest, if I were the manager, I probably would have gotten up in front of the whole dining room and publicly apologized to everyone who had had their food delayed because of needing to clean the kitchen due to this woman's (clearly indicating who she was) apparently fraudulent misrepresentation of a medical condition. _Then_ refused to serve her any more food (but happily taken the dessert orders for everyone else at the table). (But then I probably wouldn't last very long as a restaurant manager...)

I had two right knee reconstructive surgeries. There are days when I have balance issues. I have a handicapped hanger. On several occasions I have been questioned over my using a disability parking spot. If it’s in the summertime I pull up the shorts to reveal my 6” scar. If it’s in the winter I pull out my smartphone to show the photo of my leg cast that went from the toes to the thigh. I can also show a photo of the long scar on the knee. The reaction of the “Karen” varies. Most will yell at me for not looking handicapped enough. One Karen stared at my scar. She said nothing but she did a 180 degree turn & moved away rapidly.

Thats not fair to say, i know an absolut slip of a girl who had a bad hip since she was 16 and it can even be, that a bad hip is the reason you gain weight . . . Him being an ahole does not makeit ok to claim big people deserve and caused all health issus themselfs, so are undeserving of treatment! Thats a very common and absolutly detrimental medical bias that leads to severe injuries and illnesses not getting treated cause the doc does not bother looking into it and rather just tell them, they need to lose weight before it is worth looking into it . . . Which is why I got really mad at the cops in the Charmed episode "Witchstock". The hippies were kicked out of the park by the cops claiming that taxpayers paid for the park. My daughter is lactose intolerant and it developed in her late teens so she avoided everything that may have it so, basically dairy. This one night, I posted that I made too much rice for dinner and that I HAD to make a rice pudding and, my daughter knocked on my door 5 mins later and then an hour later, she was on the toilet for half the night.....I asked her why she put herself in this situation and her response was, because I love your rice pudding mum.

It's really sad how stores seem to be magnets for people that think disabled refers exclusively to people who refuse to control their weight or who are just outright missing limbs. As is mothers shaming other mothers for breastfeeding, in a room literally designed for nursing. The idea seeing a breast is going to traumatize a kid is insanely silly as well. That level of prudishness is goofy. Breastfeeding isn't for everyone but it's not going to hurt anyone.

Omg that lactose story was too close to home. I was a server in the Boulder Colorado area during the peak of the gluten free craze. We constantly had people doing the exact thing described in the post, most often with our delicious beignets, which were like 100% gluten lol. These people would complain and demand all sorts of special accommodations for the rest of their order and then get a huge plate of beignets. It was infuriating and they never tipped well. Eventually we just started lying to them that things were gluten free even when they weren’t. Of course this was only done with people we had personally witnessed eating gluten without problem. Our chef took celiac disease, an entirely real and dangerous condition, completely different from “gluten intolerance” very seriously.

My late husband was a big honeybear of a man. 6'5" and pushing 300lbs. If you didn't know him, he could be intimidating. He regularly walked our neighbour's big Bernese Mountain dog in the park. One day he came across three losers bullying some teenage girls. He walked up with the dog and quietly said, “Is there a problem?” while holding back the growling dog, who knew trouble when he saw it. The bullies turned around and saw this behemoth with an angry dog and they ran. My husband made sure the girls were okay. They thanked him and the dog got some thank-you pets, too.

Well, for the breast-feeding lady in the nursing room, the other lady was totally inappropriate, but if I were a shy type, I would put a little clean diaper or a clean, disposable diaper or a small blanket or bib or something and pin it to my blouse so that I hide most of what is being done. But the lady was a total witch. The second story the restaurant story I would have just refused to serve her after that so take their orders and everything so you don’t embarrass the rest of his family, but then is the manager. I would pull the lady who claims she had a fake allergy aside and tell her that she’s no longer welcome in the restaurant and make sure that you can enforce that.

So my mom has told me this story hundreds of times. I'm disabled and my mom had to take me to the children's hospital as a kid alot due to it. This hospital wouldn't let her take me somewhere to nurse so she had to cover me up. Like op a kid asked my mom what she had under the blanket. My mom tells the kid she's feeding me. The kid asks her "Huh" so my mom tells the kid "Have you seen a baby cow nursing off its mom" the kid according to my mom the kid runs to his mom and said "Mom there's a cow under there". 😂 I still laugh about it to this day

In this day and age, people are still shaming mothers for feeding their babies. Worse, a person who is a mother herself doing so in a space specifically reserved for exactly that purpose. This hits home for me. How often I was told to nurse my babies (now adults) in the restroom areas (ew), or the time I was nursing one of my kids in my own car, when someone knocked on the window to tell me to do that somewhere else. I always cover with a light cotton gauze throw for privacy, anyways, so I don't know why this was ever an issue. Fortunately, most people in our area were okay with this, but it only takes one or two instances of this kind of harassment to traumatize a person, and most businesses, even the family restaurants we went to, were very cool about it. Last story with the "lactose intolerance" woman...I hate people like that. I have real allergies and intolerances, and I'm hyper aware of when people are faking it for attention. I understand that some allergies and intolerances may present differently from mine, even to the same items, but one figures it out after a while when people are faking or exaggerating. That waiter should have denied the order, claiming that they could not risk OP's mom's health, given her allergy, you know. That woman makes it so much harder for people like me who have real issues, since it happens so often, and staff still have to be careful, since it only takes once for someone to be sent to the hospital or even lose their life.

Handicap parking story: Not all handicaps are visible. That doesn't mean they are any less valid or painful. My knees are shot as well and I generally use handicap parking spaces (handicap plates on car). That doesn't keep the handicap spaces from occasionally being completely full and having to park and walk much further out in the lot. It's real life people.

Story 4: (This turned out to be kind of lengthy, sorry.😅) I hate when unhoused people are shamed like that. Once back in college when my mother and I were driving me back from FL to TX for Christmas break, we encountered an unhoused man at a travel stop. We thought he was approaching our car so we stayed inside, making ourselves look busy fiddling with something (he was still a stranger, a man, and we were two women traveling alone, after all). It ends up he was headed for the trash can between the gas pumps, and our hearts dropped when we realized he was digging for food. He pulled out a chip bag and dumped the crumbs into his mouth, and then he headed inside. My mom and I wanted to give him some money so he could get a hot meal from the burger place that was attached to the travel stop, so once he went inside we followed suit (again, for safety) and saw him disappear into the men's room. So we waited. When he came out we _quietly_ said, "Excuse us... we saw you outside earlier, and we just wanted to give you this so you can maybe get some food for yourself." before handing him a $20. We were trying to be discreet so he didn't end up embarrassed or something. His face broke into the BIGGEST smile like the sun, he took the money, then loudly said "God BLESS you!! Thank you so much! I AM going to get myself some food. I'm going to go get myself a HAMBURGER! 😄" He thanked and blessed us a couple more times, then turned to go to the burger place. My mom and I finished our business inside and went back out to our car. It was parked in a space right in front of the door, and as we were getting situated before leaving again we saw the man through the glass, standing in line at the convenience store counter. He had a big bag from the burger place and a half liter bottle of Dr. Pepper in his hand, still grinning from ear to ear. That happened literally 20 years ago and I _still_ think about him from time to time and wonder how he's doing. I hope he was able to get his feet back under himself eventually, because he seemed like such a kind person. Eff anybody who treats unhoused people the way that Karen did. They're still people and worthy of dignity and common respect.🙁

Both my parents' cars have handicapped tags. I'm just waiting for someone to snap at us when I'm out with my father (two bad knees and recovering from a broken back) or my mother (who wears a knee brace and is waiting for surgery). Story 2 depending on the state. DV plates don’t make it legal to park in handicap parking places. I know Texas changed that this year. Several groups of activists for disabled people have been pressuring legislators to make placards or tags with handicap logo required to park in those spots. IMO that is up to the police and stores to enforce. When it comes to legal matters. Self help never is a good option.

They have to have plates with both the DV and the handicap logo on them. Mine are just handicap because I am not a veteran. If I am in the car and a DV/handicap pulls up, I will vacate the spot in favor of the veteran, in gratitude for his service (both my parents were in the Navy during Korea). I can park elsewhere or wait until my husband's with me. He is the one who really needs it now, with a liver condition that has him very anemic and his weight flutuates 10 pounds every 2 weeks from water retention. I usually drive and he goes into the store while I wait in a spot to see him come out and pick him up.

Karens like the last one are the biggest reason why I'm self-conscious about telling places I have an anaphylactic allergy. The one time I brought it up in a restaurant, they added what I was allergic to anyway and nearly sent me to the hospital. Since then I do immense research and if I could even remotely be exposed, I don't go there. It's not worth the risk or humiliation of having to call on wait staff and tell them the order is wrong, while I'm taking Benadryl, or worse having to call an ambulance and use my Epi Pen.

The first story reminds me of a story my husband told me awhile ago. This was when we owned our own Cafe. He had a hired girl, and she worked a few shifts and then never came back. Not a phone call, nothing. A month goes by, and my husband gets a call from another business asking about this girl. Apparently, she had put my husband down as a reference to get a job with this new company. My husband was honest and said that while she was here, she was good, but then she ghosted me. I've had no clue as to her whereabouts. A few days later, he gets a call from this girl, and she's not happy. She's screaming at him and asking how he could do that to her. She wanted that job, and he had messed it up for her🤦‍♀️😂😂😂

Story 2: Not all disabilities can be seen. OP/Dad should have asked the CS rep what THEY wanted him to come there for. Ignore the Karens...don't interact with them at all. Story 3: If babies were not meant to nurse from their mother's breasts then the breasts would not produce milk. Kudos to MIL, SG & the other Mom that helped OP with Karen.
