They should have done some study of Earxling history. Detonating nukes in the atmosphere is something they did, repeatedly, just to see what would happen. They also could have learned the concept of "burnt earx tactics" summed up with "if we can't have it no one can." Just a cursory study of Earxling history would have been enough to conclude taking the planet with the biosphere intact was impossible. Hell, they are pretty effectively destroying said biosphere just for the fun of it, give them an actual reason and the results would be self evident.
