@@michaelakeay8657 I don't think he sounded incredulous. He even gave an explanation as to why someone might have never pumped their own gas before and was therefore quite understanding. In the context of America, though, it is a little weird that someone wouldn't know how to pump their own gas because full-service stations are a thing of the past. Most of the country pumps their own gas, so once you travel outside of the full-service areas, you need to pump your own gas. Traveling outside of these areas, for the most part, doesn't take very long and most people leave the state they were born in at least once. It's not unheard of for someone to stay in these areas for their entire life, but one might think that someone traveling to another country might have left their full-service area for even a small period of time at least once. Again, not unheard of; just a little strange.

I’m from the Midwest. I went to grad school in Connecticut. I got caught off guard one weekend when I found myself in New Jersey and needed to get gas. I pulled in, got out of car to start pumping gas, and the attendant had to explain to me that I’m not allowed to pump my own gas.

It's super easy to do. Most cars have an automatic shut off when your tank gets full. You pay (outside w/ a card or inside w/ whatever), choose your type of gas, and then put the pump into your car and hold down the handle. Once it's full, there's a click and it stops pumping. You pull out the pump and put it back in the slot where you got it from. Then put your gas cap back on and you're done!

Unlike the lady in the vid, this woman either knew or realized she'd have to do it herself, and she was very polite about it. Prior New Jersey resident here. It is actually illegal for you to pump your own gas/petrol in the state. They made the law to make more job openings so that the gas stations would have to employ enough people to pump everyone's gas. It definitely leads to many people not knowing how to do it themselves, but provides many jobs for people that don't have/need any prior experience. Usually reaction to seeing someone pumping themselves is to inform of the law and assume they are from out of state. So, typically not such a big deal. I have never seen the law enforced, but it does set a precedent for the stations to keep multiple employees on staff at all times.
