I was lucky enough to have seen R.L. live back in 1997 in a bar in Oxford Ms. He had a four piece electric band and brought the house down. The word on the street was when Mr Burnside was in town it was not to be missed and that was the truth!

Had the pleasure of seeing RL in Australia in the early 90's - after the Dave Stewart doco. "Deep Blues" was released. He was with a couple of other artists. At the end - the audience (1/2 full venue) asked him back for an encore. He asked what we wanted him to play. The audience answer - to a person was "Play anything - we just want to listen." Signed autographs - came across as a very humble man. He got a terrific ovation from an appreciative audience.

The beauty of r.l. Burnside was his genuine indifference to fame and money, he had little to no interest in it. He was a bluesman in its purest form. His rhythm style sets the bar for all who try to imitate him. He was a true master of his craft, well seaso ned, this man truly lived the blues and it was obvious in his music. I'm still mesmerized by his playing . I often imitate his finger style rhythms. It just don't get any more blues than r.l. burnside.

When I played Mississippi Fred McDowell for an older co-worker, he thought it was 2 or 3 guys on guitar. These riffs are very basic and simple; anyone can learn them. The real trick is in the right-hand technique, which is not easy to master and get it to sound right without tangling up the rhythm and lead. Look up a Son House video - his right hand is flailing away and you can't imagine how he possibly hitting the strings.

I've recently discovered this kind of music and immediately fallen in love with old blues rhytms... I am from much younger generation than probably most of today's blues listeners. But I never could understand the pop music... When I listen to blues, folk, jazz, music from 60's and earlier, I feel that it moves something deep in my soul... I just can't find it in today's music...

I think the argument could be made that all popular American music can trace its roots back to this, the purest of art forms, the blues.

Really love RL's rhythm. So much bounce and technique. And that soulful voice. My favorite is him playing See My Jumper out in a field. Another favorite of his is Someday Baby. Thank you for your music and heart brother in blues✌️

That's back wood rhythm, that's right. You can't teach that, you have to feel the hard times ,You eat crap, drink nothing ,starve some, cry some, let down some, talked down to. All you got is sky,air ,A guitar ,and your life, and you entertain Yourself... other folks come around and think they've found something, The Blues is real life Hard times...

If I was the lighter-skinned brother in this video, I would have the blues as well. I graduated from high school in 1986, so I know about wearing Miami Vice-inspired loafers and snug, highwater jeans, too. As horrible as that sounds, it's not what I refer to, even if you did throw up in your mouth just a little. Of course I'm talking about the Ovation guitar. A left-handed one, at that. He is a better man than I am. I'm not strong enough, not secure enough to wield such an axe. Kudos, Kimosabe. Kudos. You shall overcome.
