Two young men were in an accident where they had gone under a trailer of a 53' truck. Upon arrival, he assests the situation and report to dispatch to send the doctor working on the road that night as the men were dead. Dispatch gets all huffy and reminds him that he is not allowed to make such a statement as only a doctor can do that. They instruct him to do CPR until the doctor arrives. Well, he did not do that. It would have been pointess as both heads were on the backseat and bodies still seated with seatbelts in the front. He just waited for the doctor to arrive and declare them dead. It was procedure and there is no point arguing.

The problem is that for inmates it becomes an act of rebellion, in a population that by their definition likes to rebel, in a situation that by it’s definition is rebellion worthy. So, yeah it sucks and is dangerous, but that’s how it is. Thankfully, a lot of guards have training with EMS (similar personality type and wage expectations), so they can pick the fakers out better than the average person. Maybe the solution is to have basic medical training as part of the system.

Jump forward a couple of months and the accountant had me doing the bookkeeping and preparing balance sheets as well as doing the payrolls and filling in some of the tax forms for our clients. My salary was $125 per week. Fast forward 18 months and the president of the company started auditing our books and realized that I was the one doing the bookkeeping. He asked me what I did, and I told him in detail. Then he asked what the accountant did and I responded that I honestly did not know. Less than a month later, in October, the accountant was fired and I was given a $25/week raise. Now remember, I was still the "typist" but had been doing that job, the secretary's job AND the accountant's job for over two years. They assigned another accountant to the office (the secretary position was never filled). That all happened in October. In January, I was told that I would not be getting the cost of living increase like everyone else because I had already received my raise in October. I started looking for another job immediately. As soon as I had one lined up, I called the president of the company at home and told him I quit and would not be back on Monday. He yelled quite a bit, but I did not respond. I would run all Of the outdoor attractions by myself on slow days. I even got certified as a rock wall instructor and rope rescuer. I would literally do just about everything around that park. But thing is , I was only making $10 an hour. When I got hired on at age 21, I was promised a pay raise for each responsibility I took on at the park. So I took on everything. I even BUILT AN OUTSIDE BAR!! A whole section of the park. By myself. Because they didn’t want to hire a construction crew. But I never got a pay raise. I was literally making the same amount of money that the ladies sitting behind the front desk, handing out wrist bands were making. For 10x the work. And my manager hated me. For some reason. But there was no one to replace me because no one knew the workings of the park like I did. I eventually quit and they went on the tangent about how “We need you here and really appreciate everything you do. How does a $.50 raise sound?” I told them that at this point, since I was told I’d get a $1 pay raise for each responsibility I took on, I should be making $20 an hour. I left with the middle finger after that and never went back.

Like, bitch stfu - if you truly need that one specific person so much, why won't you incite them to stay by paying them more money and perks? For that matter, why wouldn't anyone have contingency plans for in case that single employee took a sick leave, or a transfer, or something else? Having a single person do multiple jobs and paying them a base wage, is *doubly* asking for complete ruin.

The fact that the guards were ignoring requests often enough to piss off the inmates is a problem . Sure they should use discretion, but this doesn’t sound like it was discretion

Well, it's difficult to know. For one thing, how big is the prison? How many complaints were recieved? Over what period of time? Did management find any instances of an actual emerency being ignored? Just because someone is making the complaint, doesn't mean that complaint is valid. I work at a place where we get complaints every time we make policy changes. In most cases you're talking about a couple dozen people...out of over 120k. So context matters.

@@fdm2155 The thing with medical issues is that minor symptoms can hide big problems. Sticking in your arm can be an indication you are about to have a heart attack. Itching can be an allergy but also a sign of infection. A sore knee can hide an injury. Headaches can be a thousand different things. Especially if you are not prone to having them. I've ended up in the ER because I developed full body rashes brought on by stress and me almost burning out. It was so itchy and I needed cortisone to fix it. Waiting was not an option as the rashes covered my whole body by that point.

@@Ikajo Sure but unless we can see numbers regarding staff down grading complaints to non-emergency response AND having been wrong, it seems impossible to say staff are making the wrong call regarding the handling of prisoner complaints. I suppose this is likely to be an issue any time someone (especially not a medical professional) is prioritizing attention in this way. And let's not forget the administrators reverted to the prior system of having staff make judgements about care. Seems unlikely that they've missed serious cases and yet have decided to use this process. That said, I do wonder about the liability of potentially getting it wrong. That is someone presents with a dull back ache and is made to wait for non-emergency care only to discover it's a serious problem.

I had a nearly similar experience at a McDonald's drive-thru one night. It was late, I was coming home from partying with a friend and had serious munchies. I ordered a double cheeseburger, fries and an apple pie. There was a car FULL of people behind me. I paid and pulled up to the pickup window. There was a considerable delay then they apologized for the wait and shoved a bag into my hands. I didn't pay attention to the size, I was buzzed. Pull into the parking lot to sort out my food to eat on the run. . . and realize I must have been given the carload behind me's order. The lobby was closed and there were at least 7-8 cars in line so I wasn't waiting in that queue. The seagulls ate good the next morning and I pigged out as well.

I volunteer tutor online. All of my students are college/uni students. The reason I only tutor this age group is simply because of the abuse a volunteer takes from a school system and that doesn't exist for higher education students. Being a retired volunteer absolutely has its advantages but unfortunately, I know a lot of teachers and tutors that help the school-age students, and burnout and depression are constant personal battles. It's a real shame as these very idealistic young people love teaching and within a year some school district has ground their soul to dust. The stupidest thing I hear from teachers is that they are told there is never enough money and yet millions are spent on offsite admin offices that the landscaping alone would cover the costs of books.

The best malicious compliance I did, was also pro revenge. It happened in grade school. Like any/every school, there was a bully. He would pick on me the most, because I easily got angered by his b.s. one day, at the end of the day, we’re all in the locker room getting dressed (coats and such) to go home. He’s on my case, and I don’t want to deal with him, so I look him straight in the eye, I’m breathing heavily at this point, and I tell him to leave me alone. I was ready to break his neck, but since I was staring at him so intensely, I didn’t flinch, or look away when a teacher walked in. I just saw her out the corner of my eye, and I let him do whatever he wanted. He only pushed me into the lockers, but he did it all in full view of her. God I still hate that kid.

Once worked for a popular fashion accessory chain as 3rd key holder. Was supposed to be an extra 10 pence per hour. Was cleaning one day and found a crumpled form stuffed behind the tape played (yes it was that long ago!). It was MY start form. They hadn't been paying me correctly for 2 years! They refused to correct the mistake, refused to give me promotion when the manager was fired for theft because "you don't have enough experience" despite running the shop for 3 months on my own, then the district manager came down and treated me like a toddler. Even pushed me off the till saying "I'LL show you how to do it properly" then stared at it wondering what to do while the cue got bigger and bigger. So I pushed HER off and got through the cue in minutes. She took it personally. Was ok for her to do it, but for me to do it? She tried treating me like something she stepped in so I quit a few months later. The look on her face when she realised I wasn't kidding was hilarious! Also, what she didn't know, was I deliberately didn't do the paperwork for months and moved everything around in the stock room! Not much of revenge but felt amazing knowing what the DM was about to discover! 😂🖕

I started working about 2 years before an almost $2.75 minimum wage hike in my state. I have by then received 3 small raises (90 day raise $ 2 yearly raises) bringing me at $1.25 above that minimum wage (before the hike). When the hike hit, I received the new minimum wage w/o my experience or previous raises factored in, so I was was making as much as brand new hires. Plus while the new hires were eligible for a 90 day raise after through the trial/training period, while I was not. So basically I would be making less than brand new hires despite showing years of experience, excellent performance reviews and loyalty. It was suck bs and should be illegal, they should be required to factor your current pay above minimum wage into the minimum wage hikes.

This reminded me of a job I once had. Long time ago I was a field service tech for a business machine retailer.(copiers, faxes)I was the lone tech and i had accounts covering at it's greatest distance was 159 miles. Our office was about 95 miles from my home. I remember on a late friday nite being called into the office after shift for a company wide meeting. Upon arrival i found out my service manager was just fired. I was rather disappointed upon hearing this as he was a really nice guy and very supportive of his tech department. I was called into the conference room to meet with the owner of the company, the sales manager, and the secretary. They asked me why on a particular day I only service 2 calls. I remember on that day I had to drive about 50 miles south, spent 1.5 hours on that call than 159 miles north for my second call. That call took nearly 3 hours. They didn't like my explanation. Than they ask why it took me so long to get to the company meeting? I had just finished my last call that nite around 4:15, the dispatch quickly ended my day so I can make the meeting. My last call that nite was 71 miles from the office, but had to drive thru rush hour traffic nearly the entire way. They didn't like my explanation for that either and the owner told me it only takes him an hour to make that drive. Now this was the 80's, and the speed limit was still 55. So even simple math tells me you'd have to drive over the speed limit to make it in an hour even without traffic. And I know I wouldn't be able to put a traffic ticket nor the raise in insurance premiums on the reimbursement reports. So after getting out of that meeting, I hand in my 2 weeks and noped the faq out of there. I heard that place bk'ed within 2 years after I left.

I was the only one with this in my department. The next year they stopped the pins but gave a polo shirt we could wear way softer than out normal ones after 50 compliments. I earned it by February. I reduced shrink in the department and upped sales. Had customers who would only buy from me. They would use me for samples since I was better at selling stuff and hygiene. Some customers did not even which product they liked they would come to me at the samples and ask which one of the meats they got. I also could help people pick out the meats by asking questions to figure out the best options for them. I had all the salt levels memorized for those with sodium issues. I had all major allergies remembered from all our products (one reason they wanted me on samples)

"Button down shirt and khaki type slacks okay?" Bosd said yes. Monday, I wait for everyone to go into the office for pur start of the week meeting before I make my entrance wearing a bright orange Hawaiian shirt. Office manager stares daggers at me. Boss just smiles. He knows what's coming.* Tuesday, bright red Hawaiian. Wednesday a different bright orange. Thursday a black one with chili peppers. Friday, ocean blue with ukuleles. Wore them religiously the rest of the time I worked there. *Only time boss had ever gotten on me about my shirts was when I wore one with a chili pepper and the words Bite Me. He asked me not to wear THAT shirt again. No problem. Next day, it was a different shirt that said Bite Me. "Hey, what did I tell you yesterday?" Not to wear the shirt I had on again. Why do you hate chilis so much? Boss sighs. "How many Bite Me shirts do you own?" Five. All gifts. "Fine. Wear them all this week and get it out of your system." Thanks, boss.

Re: Minimum Wage increase is not a raise but it counts ac... I would quit a job that told me that the recent increase in the minimum wage is the reason that I'm getting a raise. Employers are supposed to increase pay to more than the minimum wage. But we all know that's never gonna happen because employers can getaway with paying poverty wages. Look at the restaurant/bar industry. Many of those owners don't pay their employees because they use the excuse of them earning tips. This results bartenders, servers, and other waitstaff making just a scant $1/hr when all is said and done. So...custodial staff here. Any others who could see and give their experience? I'm a student at the University I also work for. I started out as work study, and at the top of last year when I had a debt I couldn't pay and had to work for, my boss gave me s part-time position, so I could pay my bills. Until early spring semester this year, I held on to that part-time position. Well, my issue is more with how we're treated than anything else. We have great bosses - they care about us, and treat us fairly. But because the school is in charge of our budgets and such, they have had to fight for years for raises for the full-time employees. They got one at the top of the year (finally), but it was very small, from my understanding. Still, it's one step up from where they were before. But now we're treated differently by the people closer to the head of the University. It's almost like they saw the requests for raises over the years, finally gave the team a little one, and then said, "That's enough for them. They don't deserve anymore." Well, it seems as though "anymore" includes respect, equality, and everything else. We get weird looks from higher-ups, and the team feels highly disrespected. We had a meeting around spring break and it turns out that most everyone on the team feels as though they're being walked all over... It bothers me that custodial staff everywhere feel this way. Why treat them differently because they do a job very few people will? I get that some of them are rude because they hate their job, and as a worker on the inside I can say it's likely because we have to deal with some pretty ridiculous stuff sometimes - no excuse, but it might set some off. But to see custodians treated with respect for the work we do (it's a LOT harder than you think, especially during a global pandemic), would make me a very happy person... Am I just being dramatic, or are custodial workers everywhere just treated as less because we go behind people to clean up their trash, and poop?

However, it was huge coincidence, because that was the time, where after years of great work, I realized I have a value, which is quite a bit higher than what I get. So one month I got those 150 more. One month later, I got 500 more, permanently. Was a great company, for a couple more years. Everything went downhill rapidly in 2019 and I quit. Their supervisor wasn't going to let them unchain him and leave until the organs had been harvested. So even being declared dead by a team of doctors isn't enough for some police.

It's still only the first step in a career, but I've made a lot of progress over the past year.

I'm glad that in Germany we have regularly 10 days/child/year sick leave if we need them. Since corona times and over 2023 it's beefed up to 30 days/child. You get a receipt from the pediatrician, send it to the employer and the health insurance. The employer doesn't have to pay this days but the health insurance reimburses at least 70% of lost income.

To the last story, the ability to 'officially' declare death is limited to few because of legal ramifications... despite the fact death is beyond obvious. In some cases and places, death in legality is impossible to reverse despite obvious proof.

That first OP put up with that crap for so much longer than I would've. First, they didn't tell you about the reimbursement stuff. Then they told you to stop filing the reimbursement stuff. That would've been plenty to go to some kind of authority.

So with the last one. The prison my father was in didn't believe him when he tried to call a medical emergency. He went from benching weights to wheel chair bound in 3 months. After 5 months of him trying rhey finally believed him when he passed out and the couldn't wake him up. He died 3 weeks later from an aggressive form of lung cancer. The doctors said that if they had sent him the first time he asked they might have been able to do something other than make him comfortable.
