2D animation isn't more expensive than 3d animation because it's complicated or requires more skill/manpower, it's more expensive because 2d animation has an established union that requires animators be paid at least union wages. 3d animation is newer and doesn't have any major single union the way 2d does, so big corporations can get away with exploiting animators if the project is 3d.

I think Disney doesn't make 2D animation anymore because the 2D animators unionized and the 3D animators didn't, meaning if they wanted to do a 2D animation they'd actually have to pay the animators fair wages and it's Disney so of course they won't do that

Edit: me when I spread misinformation on the internet (look at the comments for more details) Sorry to disappoint the guy, but plastic dinosaurs are almost certainly trees from the Carboniferous, when fungi and bacteria hadnt yet evolved to decompose wood, so it was all left to sink into the swamps. Thats what the vast majority of fossil fuels are made of. Maybe theres a tiny bit of dinosaur in there tho so theres a little hope

What do we learn? 1- The world is made for the rich 2- The government does not control food prices, this is not the USSR 3- The price increases have been most pronounced in the areas where people cannot avoid them, that being food and necessary househhold items. The lesson here is that capitalism is the root cause of this. Specifically predatory generation of short-term profits by shaking down consumers whenever there is an excuse.

The answer to why they switched to 3D/Computer animation is simpler than you think. Both cost a lot to make, but in the 2000s, 2D was fully unionized and protected, 3D was not. To this day, 3D animation is still not unionized, though they are beginning to after the wau Disney has been treating their 3D effects teams. So, yep, in the end, it was cheaper to go with 3D because of the lack of union.

18:22 So... I was at... I forget which con. I think Anime Expo or SDCC around 2004 or so. Around the time Disney and Pixar became one and Pixar started handling most, if not all, the animated movies. The question to Pixar/Disney was whether or not Disney was going to stop making traditional animation movies. Their answer was no. That anything CG would be handed off to Pixar and anything 2D will be at Disney. They then showed a trailer for The Princess and the Frog movie to show that they'll still do 2D animation. Why am I bringing this up? Well, first, they lied. Second, one of the other questions was about 3D vs 2D and their opinion about it. They said that 3D is what the animation industry is moving towards, and there's not a lot of demand for 2D animated movies. Someone then asked about Studio Ghibli films and how they're still 2D and have great numbers. They called them, and implied that all anime, was an exception/niche market that will probably never appeal to the mainstream (right... the animation of an entire country is so niche...) and then changed the topic. Yeah... that really aged well... We totally only watch 3D animation now. It's not like Harley Quinn isn't a well loved show, nor Star Trek: Lower Decks, nor Inside Job, nor Invincible, nor Rick and Morty... Nope, it's all 3D... /s In short, yes, 3D can cost less and is often less labor intensive than 2D, but neither is guaranteed nor can you say most of the time. Animation at that point was really well optimized and efficient. Between overseas production studios, digital tools to paint, copy/paste, adjust, generate inbetween frames, the lack of need for animation cells and/or VFX's or actual cameras, etc. it's not as expensive as people think it is. Really, it had more to do with execs wanting to jump on to the new shiney thing rather than "it's labor/cost intensive". Because, in a lot of cases, it's not. A 3D model can be reused, but, in the mean while, it needs to be modeled, boned, textured (textures will also need to made and/or aligned), physics applied (hair, clothes, etc.), different models depending on the movie, etc. Then all the props need to be modeled. And the backgrounds. Etc. Then lighting, etc. etc. And that's ignoring the enormous rendering time. At that point, maybe still now, people/studios were rendering in layers because it was quicker. But then, you still need to do 2D effects, then compositing, which also has rendering time, then editting, which also has rendering time. So yeah, it's not guaranteed that 3D is less labor intensive nor less costly. It all depends on what you're doing. If your movie/film has a lot of one-off's (character, props, locations, etc.) it's usually faster to just use 2D. If it reuses a lot of assets (Movie has limited locations, characters, props), it's usually faster to do 3D. TLDR; traditional/2D animation is not necessarily more expensive or more labor intensive than 3D. Companies like Disney moved away because money+trend chasing by heads of studios.

Ok, here's a tip: you can minimize all windows using Win + D to show the desktop. Pressing this again reverses it. Use this instead of Win + M to minimize. Keep in mind that if you open something up from the Desktop, it will no longer be minimized and doing Win + D will just minimize that and pressing it again will just restore that one window. I wish this was a little more useful.

Treasure Planet is mixed animation, partly 3D partly 2D. 3D animation isn't cheaper because it's less work, It's actually more work, but the animators get paid less. 2D animation is a well established field of art, and therefore has labour unions. 3D is newer and 3D animators to have the same protections, so 3D is cheaper.
