I believe the arabs invented the system and they spread it to europe and so europe came up with the characters 0123456789 to represent them, we have our own set of characters to represent numbers. Decimal number system was established in India. Arabs who came to trade adopted the system and gave it their own symbols. The same Arabs spread the system in other parts of the world through trading. In India itself, there are many symbols for the decimal numbers across many regions. Much of which have now become obscure since no-one except old people uses them. Most of my generation only know the english(international) symbols.

For those who don’t know, public buildings (at least in North America) have door that open out. This is because in case of an emergency people inside can run out the door without having to stop and pull open a door.
