Being a DIY basic mechanic (like OP sounds) is about the weight in diesel. Same the big stuff for your mechanic, but I always do my oil changes, air filters, brake/coolant flushes and disk brakes. Can't imagine how much I've saved over the years doing that.

I'm so confused by the mechanics story, is it considered normal to expect your mechanic to cheat you out of money or something without risk of punishment? Cause where I live (Belgium) if a mechanic would try to pull this on someone and get caught that's an instant criminal record, at minimum a fine and at worst fine + jail time. Here the revenge part at best is, embarrassing them or making them waste time, like what the hell?

I know that quite a lot of european countries have "customer protection laws" wherein things like this are prosecuted, and there are heavy punishments. In the US and other parts of the world, it seems the focus is more on protection of corporations than citizens, so there's way less legal protection for consumers.

In Socal (southern California) its different, you can only tell a customer what's broken or needs to be repaired. You can't recommend anything. Its a double edged sword though, customer won't get scammed but you'll also have very dangerous cars on the road. People still get scammed with this in place but if the scammers do get caught its either a fine or you can lose your business license. I've only heard of people catching fines though. But the double edged portion of that is say for example a person shows up with bald tires, metal to metal brake pads and brake fluid leaking, all I can tell them the specs on their tires and brakes, and what's leaking. I can't tell them its unsafe to drive like that, and I can't recommend they replace anything. All I can do is have them sign a work order saying they declined service for liability reasons and after they leave contact the DOT and report them for unsafe vehicle. I can't do this before they get on the road because it can be considered persuasion. But as a said in another comment section, 1st watch out for the places that offer 25 point free inspections its a way for those places to up sell and possibly scam and 2nd don't take your vehicle to jiffy lube. If you do take it to jiffy lube because its cheaper you deserve everything that happens to your car.

In Poland you have pretty much no protection from scammers, in fact most scammers are protected by law. Add the fact that the law also requires you to visit a mechanic once a year and have a stamp that your car is 100% OK, and you can see how this is a common practice here.

Sadly this is a huge problem. My brother was an automechanic for more than 30 years. His customers knew they could trust him so they followed him from job to job whereever he worked in the city! He works for a major airline now and some old customers still try to get him to fix their cars.

Had a mechanic try to sell my mom on two new brake calipers for her car. One was frozen and needed replacement. The other was fine. He wanted around $500 for the work, but I knew that the parts alone (based on what he said needed doing) would be more than $500 unless he was buying junk parts. I took it to another mechanic I knew did honest work. For around $250, he replaced the one bad caliper and replaced the pads on both sides. The other stuff that "needed" to be replaced was perfectly fine.

My 11 year old son is really talented at explaining to boomers how to use smart phones and smart TVs. He taught both my mom and my fiance's mom how. Any time a boomer has a question and he's around, if he knows the answer he shows them how in a way they understand because he's a very literal boy. The things I'd tried to teach my tech illiterate mother for years, he was able to teach her in 1 quick tutorial. Honestly, if he could teach classes I think he'd be really great at it.

Oh, they tried scamming me the same way. Supposedly my entire brake system and suspension needed overhauling, but as soon as they've mentioned the serpentine belt I knew they were bullshitting me. It's been on my car for less than 48 hours. Told them immediately to lower my car and I continued driving it for many years. The mechanic story reminded me of this; My partner had to take the car to the dealership to get the Engine checked and they tried to tack on a bunch of other things that were apparently wrong with the car, so instead we took it to his uncle who has been a mechanic for over 15 years and he checked the car out and said that literally only one out of the six things that they listed was wrong. He then mentioned the fact that a lot of dealerships and mechanic shops are being told by the higher-ups and bosses that they need to fabricate more problems as a lot of shops are losing business, so so scummy

There needs to be a seperate organization that goes around and secret shoppers mechanics, and if they get caught pulling these stunts they are immediately shut down and black listed from owning a repair business. This shit is so common its scary, even at big box brand name shops like Jiffy Lube. Every time 60 minutes or a local news station does it at least 80% of the selected shops try this stuff. My first job was working under the table for a new local mechanic who had just set up in the area. I met him one day when my mom's car was making a weird noise-He checked it out and did a quick fix w/ a spot weld in less than 5 minutes, free of charge. He was the most no-bullshit mechanic I've known to this day, and his business was absolutely booming in no time. I had moved on to other work a few years later, but I came home from a trip out of state to find out that he'd suddenly passed away and I was too late to attend the funeral. He was a family friend and it was heartbreaking news. Still haven't found another mechanic as trustworthy/reliable as him.

I work technical support and occasionally get asked questions for things out of scope. My response is usually "I don't know but I can Google it and see". I worked in a tech support call centre giving fixes over the phone without remote access. Most of the time, we'd just google the problem and work through fixes that couldn't be solved with basic trouble shooting. Instructing boomers & Karens on how to set up wireless printers and sound systems were absolute hell.

The same thing happened to me in one of those chain oil change places. I knew there was a small leak in the oil filter that would be corrected by the oil change. The service manager brought me back to the car, solemnly pointing out that there was a very largish leak in the oil hose(?) That required immediate repair to the tune of $900 and he didn't think it was safe to drive even 1 mile in that condition. My husband's undergrad was teaching shop in schools. I called him and he told me to drive to the school (about 500 feet away) and he would sic his students on it. They found an obviously very large recently made gash in the hose and he went to the auto parts store(another 600 feet away) and bought the replacement. Then he sent a detailed list of services(each student got a stipend for hours and/or tasks completed on cars) to the manager of the chain oil change place, with a VERY strong suggestion that he pay up or he would be calling 1)corporate headquarters, 2)the BBB and report them for shady business practices, and 3) the police for property damage, assault on (me) for causing the obvious recent damage which could have caused an accident possibly harming or even killing (me), and would be suing the shop's owner foe r the aforementioned damages. He paid up, but required us to not perfom the items listed above. And to NOT report them to the media. Didn't need to, as mine wasn't an isolated event. Another former customer did.🤣

Once had a mechanic attempt to scam me. Didn't feel like doing oil change in the snow. So took it to a shop. At the end guy told me that I need new brakes and rotors (this where replacedin fall) , new winter tires because mine where extremely bad (had 2 week old michellin ice x pro), needed new clutch along with new transmission fluid, coolant and brake fluids. He told me that it's a common job for a car with such high mileage (my car had around 55000km or 34375miles). I asked him "are you sure that it's all for my Subaru?". He confirmed that it was indeed for my car and because I was driving so much is why so much wear is on my parts. My last question to hime was "is my car still on a lift?", he said "yes". I just went to the front desk where owner was sitting and asked him to go see my car together. Owner was a cool dude and ex truck driver. I was a truck driver at a time and we had good chat about trucking. Got mechanic to list off all of the problems with my car and owner just said "go in my office and wait for me" he lowered my car and told me "sorry about that". Paid my 30$ and left. Reason for it being so cheap is because I brought my own oil and filter. Mechanic thought I was stupid and dint know about my car. My car was last generation in Subaru legacy to come with manual transmission which was in 2015 and I took it to a shop in 2020

Scam shops or why I pretty much always do my own oil changes. I remember years ago I took it to one place, where the “mechanic“ tried to say my oil was dirty or something. I literally watched him knock some dust/dirt off the edge/rim off the oil cap opening into the oil! Needless to say I called BS and never went back to that place!

Anything that involves mechanic work on my car I go through my step-dad first - he inspects my car and tells me what needs to be done if he can't do it himself. If I go to a shop and they try to tell me I need to spend extra money on the "best break pads" or need to spend extra on random things that I don't think sounds right, I say "Here is my dad's number, call him and clear it with it him. I'm here for 1 thing and 1 thing only, if he says I need it then I'll get it." Half the time they wouldn't do it and I get my 1 thing.

the mechanic one made me think about something similar for me. in my country we have to get warrants for our cars (a cert of fitness) every 12 months. one car I had was pulled up on a faulty steering. When I got my dad to look at it he said there was nothing wrong with it. I went back and it passed on retest without an issue. I then laid a complaint to which the response was "bring me the part that was in question and we will have a look" I responded "you can see it right now. its on the car and you just passed it." he was pretty dumb founded.

I heard somewhere that even if you DIY car maintenance, it's good to take your car in for an oil change and safety inspection, cause then you can take a look at the stuff they suggest needing fixed.

Not afraid of saying the company. Big O Tires... Had, at the time, 8000 miles on my new engine with 103,000 miles on the car. The guy came in saying I needed all new fluids including brake and radiator (brake being also the clutch in my car which was replaced not too long before). I listened to his crap and in the room with about 5 other customers I told him "you're BSing me, that engine was just replaced 8000 miles ago" and yada yada yada. I forced him to admit that he only checked the mileage on the dash and didn't do a proper inspection.

When I was a kid, of course I went where my parents took me and thats that.. but as an adult with my own money, I simply would not go to amusement parks with such ridiculously long wait times for rides. You kidding me? Spend over half the day waiting in lines. Nope, I'll go to small scale amusement parks like the Ocean City Boardwalk or Lakemont Park in Altoona to go to. Lines are less than 5 minutes each to get on a ride.

My dad could take apart and rebuild a car, so I grew up working on cars with him. Motors. body work, trim, whatever. I won't claim I can work on any car anywhere, things have changed. I don't know the electronics. I would still try to help any friend who asked, but I would have to google things now. Pretty much anything after 2--- is beyond me.

My wife is an ASE certified and Mazda certified mechanic, Mazda due to the affinity to rebuild rotary engines. She took in our 1996 Nissan Silvia (Kouki) which is from Japan. She had a very similar experience. The police were called due to me just happening to take photos under the hood from a car show 48 hours earlier. I showed up about 2 minutes before the police did. They were charged with FELONY fraud. Was taken into the shop over a cracked radiator, 800 miles from home for a car week. I had the other car we took for the week, a 2005 Mitsubishi Lamcer Evolution VIII MR.

I was laid off of a very well known bank in 2012. My office was #2 in the entire company. I was doing r 4 people jobs getting paid for one. They decided to lay me and several others off and move our positions to different states. 10 years later, im in a dream job, every person I supported is done and gone, moved departments or left completely and the person who took my job over left the bank also within weeks. It wasn't for the faint of heart and I'm still told by many they miss me. I just did things I knew how to, to make everyone's life easier. Now they are the lowest in this area of the US and other offices have quite literally surpassed them because they have my position in office and not out of state. I know a bit storage brand that left the bank because I no longer serviced them. Oh well. Too bad so sad.

I was given the runaround by some shady mechanics before too. My first car was a '93 Mustang that lasted me a few years. Eventually, I was having issues with it, so my father recommended a place to take it to. I brought it there, and called to check in on it every now and then. They started giving me the runaround and telling me various things wrong with the car, and even making up parts that didn't exist. This lasted for like 2-3 weeks. I later found out from a coworker of mine at the time that drove by there every day on the way to work, they never even looked at my car. It sat in the same spot every day she drove past. So I called up a tow driver and had it brought somewhere else, where they got it fixed in like two days. Thankfully, the first place didn't try and charge me for anything, but I would have told them where to shove it if they had.

A big garage did tried to scam me. I was there for a obviously noisy bearing driver side needing to be replaced. After their "tests" They told me both side need to be replaced plus suspension parts and brake pads. Note that I got only money for the bearing I need to replace. "I don't know how you've made that list, but I'm here only for that part. The rest is either good or I'll replace the brake pads myself at my next oil change.'' I knew before going there my brake pads were still ok untill the next oil change.

I am chuckling a lot right now. I'm a gen Xer who has taught Millennials and Zoomers about ctrl+C, ctrl+V, etc. I also taught them various functions in Word and a bunch in Excel and PowerPoint. While the Boomers grew-up with no computers and the younger generations grew-up with point-and-click we Gen Xers grew-up with computers that only had ctrl+ options - No point and click (actually most of us grew up with function keys, and had little charts across the tops of our keyboards to say which function key did what - ctrl+ was the upgrade). Granted, the beautiful Millennials and Zoomers have taught me a great deal of computering too - largely social media, etc. So, it has been a fair exchange.

At age 18, I had a full time job & a kid, so I let a mechanic change my brakes. I had to drop it off because they were "so busy". Mom dropped me off to get it on a Sunday, 10 minutes before my shift started & my car wouldn't go. It just put putted down the road. I called my mechanic dad and he told me not to touch it. That man drove 4 hours, lifted my hood, put the wire back on the spark plug & told me it was fixed. That butthole wanted to charge me $800 to "fix my car". I had known how to do the little things, but after that, I learned all I could. I'm now married to a race car mechanic, so we're good. 😆

Im an Army vet and am big on helping Vets who start businesses. By buddy has a friend who opened a shop that we used for car stuff for about a year. I needed an oil change before my family and I went on a road trip. The Vet my friend introduced me to wasn't in that day and his scummy partner helped me. I know NOTHING about cars, but I know, by study and by trade, a lot about reading people. This guy tells me I have a pinion leak on my 2002 Chevy, power nothing, Cavalier. The car was, at the time, only 4 or 5 years old and hadn't been driven for a year while I was deployed in Iraq. When this guy told me about my "leak" amongst a few other issues that he suggested I not drive it off the lot for, his body language and facial expressions were all off, ticking my BS meter to full max. I was insulted by the lie and told the guy I needed to go get cash to pay for the repairs he suggested, payed for my oil change, and never went back there. The parts guy at my local auto parts store was a mechanic for 20 years and laughed when I told him what was suggested for me. He then said "you didn't pay for that $#!*, did you? We laughed together as I said No and my next mechanic was a lot better...cheaper too.

That happened to me before. My coolant reservoir exploded and they "fixed" about 20 other things. Basically rebuilt the whole engine and brakes. I should have sold the car. It wasn't worth it

I think a rule for mechanics is dont trust the bastards until you have dealt with them long enough to know you can trust them....then heed their advice.
