Yes. This is my biggest gripe. I would rather pay the higher price than for them to use cheaper ingredients and then it sucks. I’d imagine they will lose more customers with bad taste than with the higher price.

oh this is a MASSIVE issue for me as well. i’m autistic and that means foods changing texture or flavour can be a bit of an issue for me, especially since i have a few safe foods (aka foods that tend to be very consistent and don’t mess with my sensory issues) that i literally rely on to feed myself, since my sensory issues can be so unpredictable, especially around food. and if they’re triggered…if i don’t have a safe food, i am not eating. this is not an exaggeration, it is THAT bad for me. it makes me feel physically sick to try. one of my safe brands of frozen pizza recently changed their packaging and i was SO worried it was going to be a case of an ingredient change. this happened with quorn nuggets a couple of years ago as well, but they ACTUALLY changed the ingredients and it really messed with the taste and texture “new recipe, same great taste” is a phrase that puts dread in my heart

It's usually done when ingredients or parts of something are more expensive. It's either they shrink the product or raise the price, and people usually prefer the price to stay the same. Sadly, it never goes back to normal.

How to touch grass (tutorial) 1. Locate an area of grass. The first step in touching grass is to find a place where grass is present. This can be a lawn in your backyard, a park, a sports field, or any other location where grass is growing. Make sure you have access to the area and that it is safe for you to be there. 2. Stand or kneel in a comfortable position. Once you have found an area of grass, stand or kneel in a comfortable position. If you are standing, make sure you have good balance and are able to maintain your balance while reaching out to touch the grass. If you are kneeling, place a cushion or towel under your knees for added comfort. 3. Extend your arm(s) in front of you, with your hand(s) open and fingers extended. This allows you to easily reach the grass and feel the texture and sensation of the blades. 4. Slowly lower your hand(s) towards the grass. Take your time and move slowly to ensure that you don't accidentally step on or damage any of the grass. 5. Allow your fingers to come into contact with the blades of grass. You may feel the softness and/or dampness of the grass depending on the environment. You may also feel the different temperatures of the grass if you are in a place with a different climate. 6. Gently move your fingers through the blades of grass, feeling the texture and sensation of the grass. Take note of the different feelings and textures you experience. Repeat step 6 as desired, moving your fingers through different sections of the grass to experience the variety of textures and sensations.

Since you mentioned that shrinkflation now also affects "basic" food like crackers: their main ingredient is wheat, and thanks to Russias invasion of Ukraine (which is one of the worlds biggest wheat producers) quite a lot of the last harvests was destroyed or couldn't be exported, which lead to the global wheat price skyrocketing. So you can not only thank corporate greed but also Russia for that. And about destroying mega-corps that got too greedy, we already have a prime target: Nestle.
@Rassah

It's not even corporate greed. It's just central bank inflation. You could ay politician/government greed. Corps have no choice but to increase the price in that case. True about Ukraine though
@Crow_Smith
@Crow_Smith 8 ай бұрын
Yup and this is messing with EVERYTHING not just breads and crackers because wheat is also a huge part of other food stuffs you'd probably not associate with wheat! I remember saying almost this exact thing to my stepmom when I took her shopping and she was complaining about her favorite crackers almost being the price of my fancy almond crackers [roughly $4/5 a box] - I was like "Ukraine was the World's Bread Basket, when Russia invaded, not only did their invasion destroy a lot of the crops - but slash and burn was also used in some areas avoid letting them HAVE the crop too - and what was already available struggled to leave the country - it really screwed a lot of the world over on wheat."

Be suspicious of things like compostable packaging and biodegradable ingredients. These things have to be at least technically true for them to say it, but a lot of the time they're only actually compostable or biodegradable in the lab
@TheFriendOfLucifer
@TheFriendOfLucifer 8 ай бұрын
Not necessarily only in the lab, but the recycling/composting plants need a specific process to work with those materials. In Germany some composting facilities outright refuse some of those "compostable bags" because they don't have the equipment/process in place. The ones you mean usually require 50-60 Celsius over prolonged period of time to degrade to sufficient levels if I remember correctly, while most composting takes place at 30-35 Celsius? Been a while since I've looked into it.

They’re shrinking the boxes first before the weight to make people not notice, I’m assuming, as kinda a slow burn maybe. I was searching the store like crazy to find where we kept the tropical Mike & Ike’s, only to find the boxes had shrunk exponentially but the weight was kept the same. 17:39 i can explain this one (kinda) - this is also kinda a general rule with some products to help do a thing where you’re like “why is that necessary?” - it’s often for disabled and/or elderly people. the easy squeeze bottle looks like it’d be easier to squeeze one-handed, or if you struggle with grip strength it might help. a lot of these things look a bit pointless to a lot of people, because a lot of people wouldn’t have an issue with something like squeezing soap out of a bottle, so it’s something a lot of people don’t think of as a potential issue for people. the same is true of a lot of kitchen hack gadgets (and i’m gonna include garlic crushers, a relatively normal one, in this as well), or things like pre-chopped veg. they’re aimed at people who would struggle with this take - for instance if dicing or mincing garlic is an issue for someone (because they lack the motor skills or simply the time and/or energy), then a garlic crusher or pre-chopped or pre-minced garlic can mean that that’s not then a problem for them. the easy squeeze bottle is going to be doing the same thing, just with the washing up liquid

The stir fry cups: That's how full they are, yours just actually fell to the bottom instead of hovering. They've never EVER been "full to the top" or full to that line. That's the water line. I've been eating that specific version of Cup Noodle cups for about 3 years now [might be a little less] and other than going from 75 cents a cup to 1.50+ a cup, they haven't changed what's inside at all. I have noticed, though, sometimes the noodles are more broken up than usual which makes them fall to the bottom of the cup, but each cup LIKE ALL CUP NOODLES DO has a puck of noodles that "hovers" in the cup. This is because of the water you put in. If you ever fill one you'll notice the water doesn't pool on top and it doesn't fill up super quickly. It'll look like it's going no where and then slowly crest over the top of the noodles [unless you're dumping in huge amounts] that's because it's filling the space below the noodles and then in between and then hitting that fill line. But yeah, that Teriyaki Chicken [the purple] Stir Fry cup? That's not smaller or shrink-flationed, that's the same amount it's always been. It just fell below the fill line and likely is in all that empty space that is usually UNDER the noodle. And funnier still? That's still more noodle than the first cup noodle guy got!

Like, I used to buy these packets of instant potatoes for $1 and now those packets are 1/4 of the size and 25 cents more expensive. A freaking bag of burritos has doubled in price from about $3 to almost $7. Hot Pockets has become absolute garbage in flavor and quality. It's like, a totally different world in only six months. I refused to buy a lot of stuff I used to because I'm not going to pay as much or more for half as much product. Reducing product size or amount without reducing the price is outright scamming. As for the ice cream/marble slab one- as someone who worked in a fast food place that’s marketing is geared towards their ice cream and soft serve, it’s actually a requirement that they weigh the ice cream before sale, as even I had to do that every once and awhile to show that we were following the book, but honestly no one does it just because of how time consuming it is. It might be that the ice cream companies are now actively on the employee’s if they don’t weigh it before sale, I’m assuming the reason is because it’s actual cream and not just soft serve, but I could be wrong. Also, I currently work at a dollar store. Shrinkflation is rampant and smacks you in the face every time when we need to do tag updates/ adjustments every week. A certain coffee brand has gone down from 30g (on the price tag underneath it says that) to 19g and has gone up in price. Also, a good way that they’re sneakily reducing is that they’ll first shrink the package, but keep the same weight, then the next week or the week after that, they shrink the weight. I saw this with Mike And Ike’s, literally all of them are being shrunk but they start with the packaging so you don’t notice, at least candy-wise. Also, a conspiracy of mine that I just wanna say; be careful when checking out candy or small snacks in dollar stores for discounts- a lot of the time we sell 3 or 4 different sized packaged small candy or treats, and when we have coupons or discounts you have to be sure to read the sizes as well-people mistake one small bag for a small bag that isn’t one that works with the discount/coupons, so your savings fly out the window if you don’t go back and get the right kind for the coupon.

Reminds me a few years back, a cinema chain I use to work for downsized their large popcorn bags to the point they were almost similar to their medium size ones. Sadly dont have any ref images as his dates back early 2022, but it's been going on for some time. They say 'It's to promote healthy eating' or something along those lines but it was a very notable change for regular cinema goers. Cherry on the cake as most trends of shrink inflation is they just increased the price.

Also every single biggest food like chips and cold foods, including everything fruits and vegetables like in a bag at the store or anything desert relieving in the bag needs air because if it doesn’t, it would basically look like cheese that’s been there for 50 years with no type of storage, or no type of place to be stored and left out

Cup of noodles have actually always only filled half the cup. When I was in high school, I cut into a cup of noodles once and yeah, the noodle brick is only half the cup, they just shaped the noodles to hold themselves on the top half of the cup to make it *look* like it’s full. But it’s never been full

So, the kleenex one i think is intentionally done because when there was no gap, that first grab coukd yoink a whole bunch from the box instead of just one. So the box was made slightly bigger to prevent you accidentally pulling out 20 at a time
@elaexplorer

LOL no. It's because they made the actual tissues smaller. They are perfectly happy with 20 coming out of the box at once because that's more wastage. More wasted product means you have to buy another box sooner.
