r/Talesfromretail In today's episode, a cashier accidentally overcharges a customer by 10 cents, realizes the mistake, and then immediately offers a refund. The customer demands the money be returned to her account, but the store says it will take a few days. So, what does this Karen do over a 10 cent mistake? She starts trashing the store, causing thousands of dollars in damages. The store then sues Karen and wins a $10,000 judgment. Woops!

We are all in the elevator going up to her apartment near the top floor, we are being kinda rowdy, high on life ect. A old Japanese man gets on shortly after us and rides with us nearly the whole way. We weren't mean or assholes but just being dorks. He gets off one floor below us and on his way out one of says to have a nice night, and as the doors closed he replied in perfect, unaccented English "you too!" We were laughing so hard.

Ive got a good one. So, backstory. A few years back, I wanted to find my grandmas father and his family (we never knew who he was because ohr great grandma didnt want to tell anyone. My grandma died not knowing). I found out that they came from Germany and got in touch with the closest relative (his youngest daughter). They spoke German at home, using English in public. I wanted to learn German to make communication easier for that part of my family, so I took German lessons. Im not fluent in it, but I know enough to get through a conversation. On to the story. I worked at a large chain country restraunt with a store attached as a sales associate. A large family come in, all speaking German and loudly complaining about their trip (they had driven from some state up north to visit family in the south). I minded my own business, helping a little old lady get a christmas decoration from a top shelf. The family get to their table and I assumed started eating. I was oh so wrong. About 39 minutes latwe, I can see a waitress (one of the new girls) walk back to the kitchen in tears. I hear over the radio the resteraunt manager asking if anyone spoke German and asking to translat something. Apparently, the family called the manager over because their food was taking too long, and they said the following to him: "Ihr Amerikaner seid so fett und faul. Sie essen wahrscheinlich das Essen, bevor es hier ankommt." Which basically translates to them calling americans fat and lazy and accusing the manager of eating the food before it could reach their table. Now, granted, the manager was a little heafty, so I can understand how they came to that conclusion, but it was totally uncalled for. I translated the sentence and the manager asked for me to come to the table so I did. When I approached the table, the father made an offhand comment about my weight, in German. It was somewhere along the lines of "look, he can't deny it now. They brought out the land whale." I very calmly explained to the family that my weight actually stemmed from a thyroid issue compounded by the fact that I am an emotional eater. I then shamed them for being so rude to wait staff and told them I understood they had a long trip, but they were in public now and there was a certain level of sophistication expected and I may or may not have said that the way they were acting was what paited the steryotype of all Germans being Nazi's (yes that was a little far, but it got my point across). The old lady that was with them then said, in very heavilt accented english, "please excuse my son. He sometimes forget what it feels like looking in a mirror." I had to hold back my laugh because the man was indeed very overweight. Like, probably needed two chairs for himself overweight. After they left, thwir waitress came and found me and said they left a tip for both her and me. It was a tip that was basically half their bill. That was the best day I had at that job, and the only time i ever got a tip.

The haircut is more of a symptom or by-product of the disease, which has a very low cure rate. It requires at least 3 or more of the following attributes which are: classism, racism, narcissism, impulsive anger, lack of boundaries, entitlement, bossiness, ignores any rules, domineering, overbearing, judgemental, nosey, and consistent verbal exclamations such as dramatic sighs, eye-rolling, or the use of the golden phrase "Excuuuuse ME?!". I could go on but that is basically your standard programming of a typical Karen.

That first story reminded me of one time I had to ask someone for ID when they were trying to buy cigarettes (I'm in NZ, you have to be 18 to buy cigs, and we can legally ask someone for ID if they look under 25) - she looked to be in their early 20s at best, so naturally I did what I felt was the right thing. She happily showed me her ID, confirming that she was actually 33 (or something around that, I don't remember the exact age, but it was definitely early-mid 30s). She was quite flattered that I thought she looked so young, and we all shared a laugh as I apologised for the inconvenience.

Granted, when the oil is older it looks like garbage, even more so when certain people make it. I’m just glad I haven’t had anyone complain about my chicken yet when I’m on shift. Even when we had the super picky dude who would return for the smallest reason (he’s tender dip dude). Luckily we can’t give full refunds, just coupons and such.

First story: Retail workers already have it tough enough dealing with Karens on the regular, and smartasses like these doesn't make their jobs any more worth the paygrade. At least OP got to pull a Malicious Compliance on this one, so it wasn't all that bad. Second story: I despise when people smack talk others in their native language right in front of said people, but I wouldn't put it beyond Karens to not do that regardless. It is moments like these, however, that gives me an appreciation for coincidentally convenient multi-linguism. Third story: Only a hypocrite would call others thieves, then break their property in a fit of anger and be sued for $10k, all over a meager 10 cents. Sometimes the principle just isn't worth the consequences you might face, no matter how much in the right you think you are. Fourth story: This is the equivalent of reckless and speeding drivers on the road claiming to be in a rush, yet has all the time in the world to try stopping the other driver they were tailgating for a good 10-20 seconds for not giving way to them by pulling in front and brake checking. To those people I would like to ask, _are you in a hurry or not?_ Fifth story: We need more people like that security guard who will not cut any slack for some Karl (male equivalent of Karen, just made that up). At least I got a funny image of a burly man stomping his feet with foam running at his mouth like he had rabies while growling something almost incoherently. Sixth story: There should never be a 100% refund policy on food that wasn't bought that same day, has had its package opened and/or been eaten, period! The only thing people should be able to do if either of those criteria has been filled is to leave a complaint and have the food processing investigated, and only if it's found to be an error somewhere in the processing line should the guilty party be required to pay the refund.

In relation to the last story; years ago my dad worked in a meat department in a grocery chain store. Their guarantee was the same as the one in the story. Someone brought back a bone from a roast demanding a refund stating it tasted bad. They got their refund! The worst part is they wanted bridge toll that they had to pay when coming back to the store, And They Got It Too!

I witnessed an Edith (old ass Karen) when I worked at a grocery store, return empty meat packaging because she bought it before a sale and wanted the sale price. The manager gave her a giftcard with the amount she paid for the meat then she proceeded to by $5 worth of cheese with a $100 bill. As I was on my way out, I saw her riding the store provided rascal to her Lexus SUV.

Sometimes you can predict when a new till is going to open up if there are long lines at every till and there are employees on the floor... but it's usually a smart idea to wait for the cashiers to call for someone else before moving over.

I went to a check stand at my local grocery store and placed my items on the belt. I was the second person in line. The cashier simply got up and clocked out and closed down while I was standing there waiting to be rung up. Clearly there prior to her shutting down her till. I thought at first she was going to get someone else or gathering something from somewhere else, but nope, liters left me standing with my groceries on the belt in full view. I figure she had a bad day Or something but still pisses me off a bit. If she wasn’t going to serve me she could have told me to get in line at another register.....

Had a similar experience to the first story when I was serving in Germany with the British Army. There was a group of us who generally avoided the usual Squaddie bars and headed out of town to a bar used mostly by Germans. One night a group of young Germans were sitting near us complaining about us be stupid English (in German obviously) and how they shouldn't let non Germans into this bar. I turned to them a said in German "We're not English, we're Scottish", they went sheet white and, surprisingly, apologised. We went on to have a great night out, so it was all good in the end.

My grandmother tends to get a register opened, but she doesn’t just wait there, she asks if they can get a staff member to open a register as the lineups are incredibly long, and she doesn’t know how to use/doesn’t like the self serve ones. Because she asks politely, they more often than not open a register for her, and it reduces the lines

Just after high school I worked in a cafe inside of a more expensive grocery store. Some people were SO entitled. Once I was working alone (cash and drinks) making a latte for a customer when some guy comes up. I’m talking to the customer as I make her drink (which does not slow me down, just trying to be polite.) The guy says *in a rude af tone* EXCUSE ME, I’m trying to check out. He just had a case of water from the store. (Which I could cash out, but don’t HAVE to unless they’re buying a cafe item.) I said something along the lines of “I’m just finishing up making this latte, can I get something started for you?” Him “NO. I need this checked out NOW.” Me “sorry sir, I can’t check out grocery items here. This is a cafe.” He walked off in a huff. Petty things like this made my day a little better lol.

As a cashier, I can confirm that people go to empty registers all the time and expect to be served. I hate it when people don't pay attention to the lights above the registers and see an associate near a register, not at it, and then immediately assume it's open. Like no, I was walking by on my way to a different register.

When a light is on and someone is there, get in line. If the light is on and no one is there, see if someone is near who works there and ask if the staff on this till in just away for a moment, consider what to do based on the answer. Light off, someone there, ask if they are open or not, and go from there; they might be leaving soon or just getting started. No light, no staff, go elsewhere

Many years ago I worked as a bartender. Obnoxious guy is paying with credit card and started going on like the guy in the first story. In Sweden we have this system with birthdate, a 4digit security number and a photograph on our ID or drivers license. This guy said “you have to check out my ID and write down my numbers on your copy of the receipt or else I can claim it wasn’t me and you’ll have to pay me back” (this was before the pin code system). I said “ok, let me see it”. He hands me his pilots certification. I’ve known this guy many years and I know he works for some big airline. He just wanted to impress his date. I looked at it and said “sorry, but this hasn’t got your birthday with security numbers on it”. He didn’t have any other identification on him. I said “since I know you from earlier I can write ‘known customer’ on the bill and that field is where you write down the tip you want to give me”. It was a pretty good evening.

I used to work in a really busy cafe/deli. We once had a guy, his wife(?), Sister(?) Mother(?), and 4 kids all came in, close to closing. I don't know if it was a religious or cultural thing or something, but he ordered for all of them, conversing with each of them to see what they wanted. We tried to take two of the women to the other counter but they wouldn't interact with us. It took nearly 30 minutes to do out their order, and it was exhausting. The coffee counter crew were laughing watching us struggle to get everyone to order without playing telephone with the guy, but then we got to laugh at them trying to ring them all up 😂
