@ No, *you're* wrong. The ones investigating the cops are usually their colleagues, and the prosecutors often work very closely with the departments so both groups bend over backwards to not follow through on any meaningful investigation or punishment. There's a reason why less than 1 in a hundred investigations lead to anything beyond a slap on the wrist, and no they aren't being punished for "doing their job". Too bad most managers don't do this. I've had many managers over the years who would do everything they could to not work in place of a sick employee, even to the point of threatening their job if they don't produce a note from a doctor. Like anyone is going to go to a doctor for the flu. The doctor is going to tell you to stay home and rest and drink enough fluids and such and to go to the emergency room if there are any serious complications. At one job I called in sick and the manager tried that crap with me. I told her I'm sick, I'm not coming in, and I'm not going to the doctor to get a note because I'm sick and told her if she wanted to fire me so be it and hung up. The next day she calls me asking why I didn't show up. Told her I thought she fired me, she basically beat around the bush and said she didn't and to come to work. I said I was still sick. When you're really sick, you're not going to get better in a day. I eventually quit that job after I had too much of her BS. I was basically tasked with doing all my work plus all the work the previous shift didn't do and wasn't being paid enough to do it.

@UCbPIWlYpvaZQ7nQ7XjjiSPA That one manager, I don't see how she remained a manager. @@NotSoCrazyNinja these are the managers at my job, lazy entitled and never willing to actually manage anything, they just sit in the office all day. They expect us regular employees to not only do their job but ours too and god forbid you get sick or life happens. I literally overheard a manager saying "an employee calling out shouldn't affect my ability to do my job that day". Then they have the nerve to wonder why we cant keep employees for more than 2-3 months. I'm currently looking for new employment.

My own tale from retail: I had extreme food poisoning. I lived 45 minute drive from my store (I was an assistant manager). I knew that if I went in that morning, I could leave when the store manager arrived at noon, so I took meds and made the drive. Opened the store, left my favorite associate on the register so that I could spend the next 2 hours vomiting in the bathroom. Store manager arrives, and I tell her I’m heading home. The associate tells her I’ve been in the back all morning, vomiting. Store manager says “WELL, I’m going to have to tell the district manager about this! You’re leaving EARLY on a FRIDAY, and that’s just not acceptable!!!” Me: “do what you have to do, I’m going home to die!” I drive home and have to pull over on the freeway to vomit. Twice. Spent my whole weekend sick in bed. I hate retail.

Had one time where I was working at a grocery in my college days, guy made me tough out an 11 hour shift without letting me go to the bathroom. Mom wonders what was going on when I was so late, and she blew up at my manager for doing that. Since that was well over a decade(nearing two) by now, its saddening to know retail hasn't changed since then.

This really makes me appreciate my bosses and kind customers, in the retail store I work at as the closing manager, it's just a fancy title for the person in charge when the boss is gone and closes the store in the evening, but it's okay while I'm studying, and my colleagues and most customers make the job both fun and pleasant.

I used to work at a retail store and often worked in the fitting rooms. So for some background on me; I have cyclic vomiting syndrome. This means sometimes my body decides to just get sick and I’ll start vomiting. Knowing this, my managers made me bring in a doctors note confirming my condition and letting them know how it effects me. One night before my shift I’m sitting on my couch and it happens. Yup. Vomit. EVERYWHERE. (Real fun to clean up..) so I call in and let my manager know how I’m doing and was told that if I didn’t make it in for my shift, I would be given a strike and written up. I make my way into work and grab a stool and bucket in the fitting rooms and start powering through my shift. Eventually one of three managers comes up and asks “what the hell are you doing sitting down?” I explain the situation, and how it’s difficult to stand with my stomach muscles contracting like they do, and was told “regardless, it isn’t fair to other employees and you need to get up. Now.” So I begrudgingly put the stool back into its closet space and get back to my station. Eventually the nausea hits me again and I have to crouch down behind the counter and try to be as quiet as I can while violently up chucking. Customers glanced with understanding and pitiful looks, and as I’m scanning faces hoping I’m not perpetually embarrassing myself in front of people I may know, I see my manager standing there, red faced, SUPER angry. “What the hell are you doing?? Don’t you know you’re supposed to be working?” Once again I explain that I’m doing my best and that all the fitting rooms are still cleaned up and wiped down. Regardless, it wasn’t enough and I was told that if I didn’t stop throwing up, I’d be fired. That’s when I took my name tag off and said “welp. Have fun with the rest of this shift. I’m gonna get some well needed rest.” Her look immediately changed into one of surprise and all I heard as I was walking away was “wait..! You can’t do that..!” And I saw the other managers laughing on my way out. I love going back to shop there to say hi to people and see the look on that managers face when I smile and wave.

The one Flu Story SO reminded me of the video from a news channel I saw, where a manager at one of the SubWays FORCED a worker to "Tough it Up!" and work despite her illness, which included a photo of said worker outside and PUKING on the ground, but the manager NEVER cared! Not ONLY did this B NOT care about the health of one of the workers, who was SICK, but didn't even CARED about the health and safety of the customers, who PORBABLY had sandwiches that were CONTAMINATED from the worker when she was touching the ingrediants! I've heard that the manager was fired or something for her appalling treatment of one of her staff workers! If anybody knows more about this, because I've only seen the clip on KZbin, let me know! Because I think karmic justice is due against the manager and more empathy is needed for people like the worker, and those who've been abused by their power hungry uppers in the job world!
