R1200 shift problem

See how the shift mechanism in the R1200 transmission works. A sticking shift pawl prevents shifting completely, leading to a major repair for a pretty simple issue.
Terminology correction: early in the video I refer to the problematic part as the detent mechanism, but that's not right. It's the selector mechanism, AKA the pawl or ratchet.

The sticking part you mention I had fail in my 05 GS gearbox. I was able to replace just that piece in the gearbox. You have the updated version of that piece. The original has that "U" shaped piece pressed into the main part of the piece. Well after about 90k that "U" fell off and my shifter was dead in the water. Luckily it broke at the end of my driveway and I was able to just roll it into the garage to disassemble it all. The part came from Germany in the middle of COVID. Actually came pretty fast. I was surprised. After I have replaced that part and a new clutch since the bike had to be split anyways the bike runs and shifts great. But I will say that ai have had to have my bike apart twice now since ive owned it. Its not super tough to do but it is alot of dissembly. Im sure I could do it easily in a weekend. I believe BMW says yhey can do a clutch job in 8 hours. Alsonthe inside of the gearbox isnt all that tough. Getting the other side of the cover to line up with yhe drum and such can be a bit challenging.

Do you have some fotos of the inside of the transmission from disassembling?

Hello.Thank you. What's the part called that is sticking and is it a complex DIY or a repair more suitable for the shop?

BMW calls it the “Shifting arm” in the fiche but most mechanics would probably call it the selector mechanism. It’s not difficult to change, just tedious. It can be a bit tricky to get the shift parts reinstalled into the cover but nothing that needs special knowledge or tools.

@@virginiamotorrad1952 Thank you very much. My 09 R1200RT is not going into gear as the instrument cluster indicator says. The bike freely rolls in any selected gear backwards/forward When I push and won't move forward at all when I release the clutch (when not in neutral). On the day of breakdown I was on the freeway revving while holding the clutch as some traffic merged and changed lanes in front of me. As I up shifted the bike would not go into gear I paddled to the side turned it off immediately gauges indicating near overheating. I waited 45 minutes restarted would not move when put into gear. Smelt a little burnt oil To my surprise it was down around two quarts. I have no leaks and to my knowledge have not been burning oil. I changed the oil in the bite starts up and runs as good as ever yet won't move. Feels like it's not engaging or actually going into gear when I shift even though it's indicating that it is in gear on the instrument cluster. Any helpful inside would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

@@777goldcoast your description is inconclusive to me, but any of these repairs involve disassembling the transmission so whatever is wrong will come to light when it's inspected. If you want me to have a look at it, please contact me through my shop website vamotorrad.com

Just completed this exact repair on my 05 GS 1200. K25. I will tell you that the shifting arm he has in the video is the new updated part. The U shape piece on the shifting arm looks totally different on the previous version. And that U shape piece came disconnected from the piece of steel it was pressed into and totally fell out. Not able to shift period. Luckily it broke at the end of my driveway in after shifting it into neutral. Rolled it right into the garage to do the repair? I will say if you have half a brain on you and some common sense and a little mechanical aptitude I believe this job can be done at home. I had the help of a book ( Not gonna lie it wasn't much help) and my Engine driven father in law to help. I would say it took us 10 to 12 hours to complete if done all at once. Putting the split pieces back together (4 bolts) is the toughest part. Be prepared to have BMW bleed the rear brakes when finished. It's a very delicate and expensive system and parts if you fuck up. Other than that have fun and I highly recommend getting your parts from Euromoto elctronics in Denver. I happen to live in CO so I just took a nice little drive up and picked my parts up in person. Cheaper than MAX BMW or the Dealer for the parts they do carry. They don't carry it all but alot of it! If you need to have this done depending on what bike it is I may be able to answer some questions while it's fairly still fresh in my mind.
