I certainly agree with the weight issue - not a problem until it is, and it gets that way often if you ride off road. I own an 04 1150 GS so I can't say about the newer ones, but one of my biggest gripes is that first gear is not low enough. If we're riding off road and using these things like tractors, then it should have a tractor-like first gear. Then you might (just maybe) be able to crawl through the tight places instead of blasting and crashing or abusing the clutch to find the right speed.

Engine sound is something that isn’t engineered into the bike. It’s what happens when the EPA regulates how much db is allowed coming from the exhaust. The High cost of parts isn’t a problem, you bought the bike knowing parts would be expensive. It isn’t a British bike! Traction control is somewhat over rated. As far as it goes, it is more of a farkle than a necessity. Finally the weight is there on the spec sheet. Fifty pounds lighter still makes it a quarter ton motorcycle... if you can pull 500 pounds out of a mud bog, then you can pull out 550 pounds. I don’t see any of your “points” as valid, more nit-picking than anything else. Maybe the new BMW 310 is a better fit for you. So, here you have a nice GS. I have one too. I like the sound, I enjoy the ride height too. Replacement parts are only an expensive if you buy them new. I like the heavy feel. I feel safe and anchored to the road when a huge truck stirs up a vortex. Finally, the traction control on most bikes are a relative to where you want to ride a heavy, funny sounding, expensive motorcycle. ........ in this instance a BMW. Not trolling, just not agreeing with you on your assessment of this very nicely engineered Motorcycle.

I have a 1200 from 2005 and will never replace it with a later model. It is simple (no traction control, only ABS) I can do all regular maintenance by myself, and can go anywhere I care to go. Mind you, I am not an adventure rider, that is, one of those who aim at every water puddle that they find on a trail, so that they can splash it. You got the drift .... Some of the points mentioned in this video are inherent to the bike and / or subjective. As the sound for example: it is distinctive, it depends on the engine and firing sequence. The real issue with the bike is its height. One is towering the road, which is OK-ish on a paved road, but when things get unpaved .... I'd rather be lower. I am 182 cm tall BTW

It's the Katalysator (it's that the English word as well) that kills your joy of the sound. If you want it to sound more aggressive, you'll have to replace it with an open Y-pipe... I really wish it had a button with like 3 different modes for standard quick settings, for off-road or something. Set it to 3 and abs and traction control is all off and STAYS OFF after you restart the bike. It's super annoying to change everything again after the engine stalled in off-road

Has anyone put the Akra headers on their GS to match the silencer? Most don’t and just leave stock headers on. I bought my GS new but it was a demonstrator and it came with the Akra silencer fitted. [also came with stock silencer in a box]. After reading up a bit I discovered that Akra made their own larger bore headers which gave a few extra horses. As one who thinks a few extra ponies can’t hurt I purchased a pair. However the db level increased quite a bit which I initially liked but after a couple of k miles, I tired with the noise quite quickly. As for the extra hp the new headers were meant to produce, I’d either have to have a stock bike to ride alongside mine or put it on a dyno as tbh I couldn’t tell for sure how much of a difference it really made. I will add however that several more knowledgeable people than me advised me that to get the extra hp the bike needed a different ignition/file module and setting up properly on a dyno. However for general riding I’d say my GS has enough power but on the occasions I want to nail it, I find I can have the throttle pinned and hitting the rev limiter too soon which is often disappointing. I’d be interested in comparing the 1250?

Remember their parts will all be insane, time will tell. Had a 05' GS and maint was always an issue, liked it until the bike got boring. Should've gotten the big KTM.

Love BMW but these are all valid points. I own two BMW motorcycles and two Harley’s . I gotta admit one of the funnest aspects of riding a Harley is the sound and no I don’t run stock pipes but the transition from Harley to BMW as far as sound goes really is boring. Ok all you hard core BMW Harley haters may attack me now. 😹

I think I've begun to see the light with HD, just got to see to reliability. Hit 72 yr and the lifestye is looking better.

@@bseidem5112 There’s a lot of posers Riding Harley’s pretending to be outlaws. There’s only a lifestyle if you subscribe to one otherwise you’re just riding a motorcycle. Have I Done the patched biker thing? Yes, been in 3 clubs but I’m getting bored with it. Thinking I just want to ride these days be it Harley or BMW my two favorite bikes.

The sound? That's what you're complaining about? Lost me at that point

I agree point 1. Is BMW using lead parts in bike? I'd replace your 2 and 3. With: 2. Position of muffler. Why uppright? It prevents using proper pannier on muffler side. Same issue in older oil heads and new wet heads. People install big pizza boxes outside of muffler which makes wide bike even wider. On non-muffler side the BMW vario pannier is really good. 3. Why extra universal joint at rear? This has left so many riders alone in dark when the joint or shaft splines give up. And w´two more issues in general: Why BMW changed the shaft drive to left side when the water cooling was introduced to boxers? To sell more panniers since the old ones don't fit ?? And last not least. BMW sales organisation. They have 'killed' small dealerships with good customer service and skilled and motivated service persons. Now there has to be marble desk and and lot of bling in Beemer shop, they certainly make bikes so expensive but don't give any extra value to customers. BR JJ there are 10 kinds of people. those who understand binary and those who don'T

The biggest down as owner of k1600 is the gps. I haven’t seen such crap thing before. As such I use my old iPhone and google maps on it. Now working on 3D print to replace bmw gps for iPhone. Do not use your daily use phone as gps if you mount it on handlebar as the new phones have stabilization in cameras and do to constant vibration it fail and is expensive to replace

Gotta say I like the GS sound actually. I like that boxer raspy ricer sound quite a bit. Fulfills my teenager dreams of owning a WRX with a big fart cannon on it.

There's going to come a day when a lot of BMW owners will get tired of their parts being overpriced and under-engineered, and will tire of having to defend it to the people who see through the charade. BMW charges premium prices for anything with those three letters associated with it, but their build quality, reliability, parts availability aren't where they need to be to justify the prices.

So very true. Rumor has it quality was good until the 70s and then BMW became enamored with innovation vs quality. Neat goodies but not japanese quality. Today BMW is at the bottom with KTM, Ducati, Triumph. Yamaha and Honda are at the top.

Is it bad that I think the gs pipe sounded better than the triumph? That tiger audio clip sounded more like a weed eater.

Even the weight of the f850gs (229kg) is now surpassed the weight of the old air cooled r1200gs. The f850gsA is just a crazy weight now is it like 242kg or something. And even the kawasaki led headlight unit for the z1000sx is £1400 +vat. I expect there all that expensive. OEM

Why not just buy a new headlight from eBay? There are loads of them for around 200-400$. No need for genuine when you change something a lot.

It seems most of the "faults" are only issues if you want a sports bike. The acceleration or sound is not what you buy a GS for...

I'm not liking that huge muffler. It looks heavy, it is high up on the bike, and it is gaudy looking to me. The sound isn't bad, but BMW should either install two smaller mufflers, or else hide part of it behind body panels. It also looks like it would burn the crap out of any passenger... It is HUGE. I understand that this is an "after market" muffler, but FFS... hide that huge Muff.

I completely agree with most of your bitch list, but not sure why you said you can't have both the Enduro and Enduro Pro modes. With the 'chip' in (actually can do it with a paper clip; it's just a contact bridge), my '15 GS has 5 modes: Road, dynamic, rain, Enduro, and Enduro Pro. I cycle between the Enduro and Enduro Pro regularly.

Love the GSA. The big Bertha. These bikes are for escaping when the Zombies are chasing us. Weight does not bother me. Are kidding, the sound is awesome with the Akrapovic. Since this bike sees a higher percentage of road miles than off-road I would like to see a much better horn, electric windscreen, an optional additional set of high lumen LED lights. All else I agree.
