R1200R 2017 - Headlight and High Beam Bulb Change

Changing out the headlight and high beam bulbs on 2017 R1200R. Good to know how and what tools to have on the road.

I also have a 2017 R 1200 R but it must be a newer version as Paul's bike is just like the 2016 version. On my bike, you do not remove the headlight assembly, you loosen the left side bolt and remove only the right side bolt and the assemble swings out to the left (right as you face the bike). The light fixture swivels out then, no screws to remove. This also saves the calibration step.

I have a 2021 R1250R Exclusive, nothing has changed about the swivel mechanism. However, the left side bolt need not be loosened at all as this might still affect the headlight callibration. In my case the right way to do it is: 1) Remove the cover with the r1250r logo which protects the TFT dash, the screen is not affected in any way. (This prevents the silver/grey headlight shroud from being removed, hence the need to remove the cover). 2) Remove the silver/grey shroud around the headlight, this exposes the swivel bolt mechanism on the left side of the headlight, loosen the bolt as necessary (The swivel mechanism is black in color with a black bolt, easily overlooked my most people). 3) Remove right side main headlight bolt and the whole headlight unit swivels out as you mentioned. 4) Remove the headlight back cover and replace both the bulbs by rotating the black bulb holdercounter clockwise (no need to remove the small bolts as shown in this video. PS: Wear VInyl or Rubber Gloves to avoid fingerprint or oil stains, as this will shorten the life of the bulb. 5) Put everything back together. 😀 Hope this helps someone out there. Is it possible to remove the shiny silver cover for possible color change? I was thinking to paint it with plastic removable color. I have seen some on the Web. Thanks

Thanks. After doing that I discovered that the light fixture swivels out and no screws to remove. This also saves the calibration step.

Thanks for the upload. I have an R1250R and the headlight is one of the worst things about it, both in style and performance! Riding at night, the headlight is good for about 35mph, no more (high beam is better but obviously you have to dip for oncoming traffic). If I had the money - and talent - I'd love is to swap out the whole headlight assy for a good LED based projector unit.

Not entirely convinced Peter that the new bulbs were brighter the two images side by side before and after show the floor on the before shot a darker shade than the after shot which suggests if both images floor density was married in photoshop then the before bulb would also be rendered lighter. Before removing headlight on the run or if required... place a strip of tape between side of headlight and retainer bracket slice through tape in the channel and realign when reinstalling. You are probably right about brightness but they seem to be a whiter white more close to my additional LEDs.

Thanks for the informative video! The measurements 5 meters off and 33,5"-5 cm (~80 cm) up, are this generic or specific for the R1200R? I have an R1250R -20 and which needs headlight adjustment really bad.... ;-)

I don’t see that much difference. Compared to stock, it may be a whiter light, but a H7 LED bulb would be night and day difference. I have H7 LED’s on my 2017 F150 fog lights. Those suckers put out the lights. I also want to convert my 1250R to H7 LED.

Thanks for the video, I also changed the bulb like you did. However, per the owners manual, you can change the light bulb without changing the adjustment. The light housing swivels to one side.
