I had same problem. I made my own "new" brake lines. The trick was to plumb the ABS out to the ABS in, both front and back; that way the bike thinks the ABS is still hooked up and functioning, so it does not trigger any alarms or squeal constantly. Like Adrian's bike, mine is now old school braking, as when I first learned to ride. Cheers!

So you just created two short brake lines that closed off the ABS module. Did you fill the ABS module with DOT4 brake fluid or just leave it dry?
@danthedobermann5 жыл бұрын
Hi Adrian!! You're wasting your time expecting BMW to do the 'honorable' thing. I'm in the UK, and when my ABS failed on my K1200GT, I contacted them. I explained that it was a common problem, and as it was a safety critical issue, they should recall the bikes and replace the ABS pumps. They said it wasn't a recall issue, because not enough customers had gone through the dealer network with the issue. I explained the reason for that was because of the price, £1700, plus fitting. This would probably amount to about 50% of the value of the bikes affected. They eventually offered the pump to me for £340, plus £400 for fitting at my local BMW Motorrad dealer. Almost £800 for a pump that would also fail in time. I declined, and plumbed the brakes straight through just like you did. As for the lights, I just removed the bulbs!! Happy riding!!

Cheers. I agree. Money 1st. customers 2nd

I think ABS is overrated as i barely engaged it in the few yrs I had the bike before the pump died. Since the rebuild I have had a few very minor back wheel lockups. No ABS makes for a safer rider rather than a safer bike. More automation = more complacency. Happy riding.

adrian, where did you buy the new extended brake lines or did you make your own ? Also why type of bolts did you use to block off the old intake and output lines ?

I had the local brake service guy make them up. just measured the old ones and gave him the sizes. As for the bolts, i used straight off the shelf bolts from the auto store. Hope this helps.

You posted this a couple of years ago so now that it's been a while I wanted to ask if you were still happy with the outcome. Has anyone else that's seen this tried it and been happy or unhappy? My 2002 is throwing an error now and I'm afraid it's going to come down to replacing the ABS unit or doing what you did, but I wanted to make sure people were happy with it before I do something that can't be undone.
@adrianlemcke72775 жыл бұрын
Hi Shawn. Not sure about other bikes or if this fix will work for your bike but since doing the mod and changing the rotors the bike is back to working and smooth to ride. The ABS does seem to mask some bike feel and in my case it was masking out of true rotors which caused hunting when braking but new rotors fixed that issue. Since then i have done a 2000km trip around the Great Ocean Rd in Victoria Aust and the bike didn't miss a beat . Just got to remember there is no ABS and that you might get a wheel lockup if your over braking. Hope this helps
@ShawnBroadhead5 жыл бұрын
@@adrianlemcke7277 It definitely helps. I was very hesitant to rip out the ABS on my bike, but I don't think I want to spend $3k to fix a bike that's only worth $3500. I rode without ABS before I suppose I can ride without it again. I just need to remember which bike I'm on since my other one does have it. Thanks again and safe riding. (By the way, a 2000km ride around Australia sounds amazing)

I just flushed my fluid like bmw service from the factory states every 3 years I believe it was? Idiots how many really did the brake fluid service now y’all wanna cry bout the cost of a unit.. well should have done your preventative maintenance 👨🔧 much love and safe stops 🦄🫠

Hay sounds good I am wondering will this same fix work on my 2001 K1200LT and also do you disconnect the sensor thats down on the wheel or what do you do with it.
@adrianlemcke72775 жыл бұрын
Hi. I am not much of a mechanic and i was guided by a guy who is. If your bike is a similar system to mine i guess you can bypass the ABS module and as for the sensor, i dont think leaving it connected is going to do anything except start the warning light. Hopefully this video is enough to demystify the ABS system and give you the confidence to simply by pass it and keep riding. I did mine over a year ago and have completed a few long trips with very little difference. But I ride conservatively so if you want to fang into corners and hit the brakes expect wheel lock ups.
@adrianlemcke72774 жыл бұрын
Dont disco the sensor its how the big read road speed (speedo). The fix should work for all bikes as it simply make the brake system hydraulic without a computer.

can I ask , how did you get into the dash to tape over the fault lights
@adrianlemcke72774 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike. To be honest its been so long since I did the bypass that I cant remember the actual steps to opening the instrument panel. But there was nothing hard about it just your usual hunt for hidden screws. One word of caution is when you refit the clear cover. I had the reset button under the rubber boot in the wrong position and stress fractured the cover by forcing it. No big deal just looks a bit crap. Happy motorcycling

Ho hum,, what a bummer,, mine has had no problems, but I was concerned when I first bought this bike ,,my mech quoted me about £200 to rip out the whole pump and abs and do what you did..But in the UK you can have the pump/abs unit reconditioned for about £300....I think thats the road I would go down... My discs are also warped and knocking like hell.. and front shock is shot.... So more bills later this year ...regards

Hi, have you done the rebuild yet. All the research i did told me the only place that might be able to do this work for the servo assist ABS was in America and their website says that this rebuild is a work in progress as they have done for the last 2 years.
@lipsee1006 жыл бұрын
Hi Adrian,,, Have I done the rebuild ? No,,, will get it serviced sometime this summer and get it done then... Regarding servo assist ABS pump, this outfit seems to recondition them,( www.ecutesting.com/catalogue/product/bmw_r1200_abs_pump__ecumodule_combined_amc108473.html) I have not used so you are on your own,,but price seems ok...there are a fewpeople that have done the surgery..One guy leaves abit of air in the rear brake to cut down sensitivity, do,nt know how you feel about that,I think its abit iffy...anyway ,chin up,,, Things can only get better!!

Yeah, the web site shows the 06 unit, mine is the 05 model, as far as i can tell its the only year they did the servo assist and its the only unit that cant be rebuilt

They can not repair 2004 -2006 first generation of the ABS Pump no one will touch them i have tried UK & Europe. Gen 2 ABS Pump can be repaired so it technically writes earlier bikes off shocking that BMW will not do the recall puts me off buying another bm.

sorry to brake the news but u did it the wrong way. u should have mad a couple of bypass hard lines with fittings for the front connection 12 mm I believe, where abs meets the soft brake hose connection up front, and the same for the rear break where the pump meets the the abs line, I think 12mm as well. remove the abs pump and send it for repair, in UK is about £200. U can still ride the bike temporarily. Any automobile repair shop could have helped u making the hard lines because that's what they do quite often. making hard brake lines and repair abs. when the abs pump comes back just install and remove the bypass hard lines u made and connect everything back like it was. I've had BMW bikes for about 30 years now, and I've learned that BMW uses a lot of car parts and car technology in its bikes, so sometimes BMW motorcycle owners need to think a bit different from other bike makes

I had the front brake on my 2005 K1200R fail in a very nasty spot, braking from 100kph + turning left onto a small timber bridge. I was very lucky nothing was coming in the opposite direction because I touched the kurb on the wrong side of the road & could very easily of ended up over the side & in the water. I bypassed the ABS unit & now feel much safer riding my bike. I could not understand anyone who has experienced one of these brake failures every wishing to repair the ABS unit & riding their bike knowing that the brakes can fail at anytime !

Yikes ! At the 8 min mark you comment the "ABS now squeals constantly" Dude !! don't you understand how bad that is ? At some point the electronics are going to fry in the control module at the top of the ABS pump !!! This pump running all the time also takes a lot of juice out of the battery (It will kill your battery if it does not fry the control module first) YOU MUST CUT THE POWER to the two ABS motors, that is the squeal you are hearing.
@adrianlemcke72773 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I thought of the but the ABS pump squealed well before any changes and its been a few years now since the replumb so lets see what happens
