Lets see,.. R2 was introduced as attached to Amidala's cruiser,.. so she owned R2 as 'Queen'. Later, the roguish droid served her when she was Senator. For the rest of Obi-Wan's career, R2 was a team member, not property. After Amidala returned to the Force, R2-D2 was put in to service on a Blockade Runner,... and sent to Luke indirectly by Leia, in search of Obi-Wan. Later, R2-D2 stayed with Luke for several life changing episodes, and is now back under the watchful care of 'Princess,.. General' Leia (C3P-0's words, not mine) until assigned to Rey. You lot do realise, these movies are told by the 'Droids, not the people. :)
