R2 staying with the ship is actually one of my favorite Star Wars moments. Anakin tells R2 to stay with the ship and then he never comes back. R2 never sees his friend again. This ties perfectly into Empire Strikes Back when Luke tells R2 to stay with the ship and he’s like “Uh, no. That’s not happening again!” It’s so in character for him and sad at the same time to think that’s why he followed Luke. He wasn’t going to loose another master/friend again.

I also think it’s a testament to how well he is personified that most people don’t blink an eye about referring to R2 as “he”, as opposed to how most modern Star Wars droids tend to be correctly referred to as “it”. At this point, calling R2 “it” feels wrong on so many levels, as if all the of the emotional and personal connections made with R2 didn’t happen.

9:51 The Queen-to-Senator thing makes a lot of sense-the position of Queen was an elected one, and the Naboo traditionally elected prodigious young girls to the post. The Queen ruled her planet (democratically), but when the monarch reached her term limit, she would step down and usually took another position in the government. Padmé had a rare opportunity: the previous senator from Naboo (Palpatine) was elected to Chancellor, which meant her planet’s post was open. A Senator would represent her planet to the wider galactic community. Who better to represent a planet’s needs than its former ruler, especially someone who endured an illegal invasion AND united two separate species on her homeworld?

Like if you had the opportunity to ask the literal queen of a planet to scrub down a dirty droid and she had no real means of protesting without blowing her cover, would you not take that opportunity? I bet the handmaidens all immediately started laughing their asses off about it as soon as everyone else left the room.

I feel like this may have been an easy way to explain why R2 didn’t go with Rey and the others in IX. If someone had just said “He just hasn’t been himself after he came back after Luke died”, it would have given him the perfect excuse to stay with Leia. Not only would R2’s heart not been in it without Luke, he would probably want to stay with Leia as a last connection to Luke. This makes it all the more sad when Leia dies.

Padme going to clean R2 in TPM is actually a perfect encapsulation of her character; she didn't want to just give him a meaningless applause, she wanted to specifically clean the droid that saved her life and gave them a chance. She wants to be more involved in pretty much every way in TPM and its why she falls in love with Anakin in AoTC; she wanted to shed the pretensions of the throne for a more genuine relationship. It shows that she''s a caring and proactive person stuck in formalities. This also explains why she goes from Queen to senator; she believes she can make more of a difference in the senate than being a queen.
@zantosender33484 ай бұрын
If the Queen of Naboo never sent one specific handmaiden to do any tasks, it'd look real suspicious. So Padme's on droid bath duty.

Plus it removes the real queen from the equation in case of an emergency potentially allowing her to survive

Bro this is such cope lmao. Like this is a terrible attempt to head cannon our way out of this. Let’s be honest here, none of those other fuckers standing there ever did anything, and also, who the fuck is keeping track of which of the Queen’s handmaidens are getting sent on menial tasks and how often? Only the body guards would maybe even notice, and they’re in on the whole thing anyway. Also, to the other dude saying it “removes the queen from a potentially dangerous situation” literally how? I would want the queen to be in the throne room if there were an emergency, you know, where all the guards are? Also there’s literally no threat of an assassination or anything while they’re in hyper drive fleeing Naboo, what dangerous situation are they removing her from? In fact, why did they even keep up with the decoy shtick at that point and not just tell the Jedi at the very least who the real queen was? Seems like important information to have. How can the decoy even order the queen around anyway? Did Padme ask to go clean this dirty ass droid, or did Keira Knightly just take it upon herself to send Padme to do that? Let’s not trick ourselves into thinking any of this shit makes sense
@TheDahaka14 ай бұрын
@@batsmetal8106 The actual answer is that Padme wanted to be part of the action. Before the substitute decides anything, she always exchanges a look with the actual queen, and Padme makes clear that she wants to be the handmaiden in charge of accompanying the expedition on Tatooine. You can not like it because it's dumb, but we're talking about a 14 year old girl that had monarchy thrusted upon her. It's an elective democracy, but I bet the other candidates were equally young members of other noble families. So yeah, pretty obvious that she's famished for adventure and real life experiences.
@elder-woodsilverstein77164 ай бұрын
Also, maybe Padme wanted to show her appreciation to R2 personally.
@batsmetal81064 ай бұрын
@@TheDahaka1 this is definitely a way better explanation, and I think the only real problem with it is that it’s not fully established or explored in the actual movie. It’s an interesting concept for a character but the dialogue and execution of it is so clunky that Padme comes across more as a blank canvas. I guess this is partly the problem with the fact that it’s only revealed to us, the audience, way later into the movie that she was the queen all along, which raises multiple questions and doesn’t make sense in many places. There should have been a scene earlier in the movie where her secret is revealed in a small way to a character like Jar Jar or something or even a scene where she talks to the decoy, and they swear not to tell anyone and Padme would get a chance to tell them (and the audience) why she feels this way and why she wants to put herself at risk despite the fact that it’s really dangerous and stupid to do so during this situation. There might even be a good reason, like she feels uncertain about her capacity to lead due to her overprivelged background or something. That necessary character context would be way more important than the “twist” later on that she’s the queen and would even make that scene more powerful as a character moment. But that’s not the movie we got an even this explanation which feels the most likely is really at the end of the day just our way to retrospectively justify poor writing. Let me put it like this, in this particular situation, if there was no problem with how this plot thread was handled than no one would have a problem with it or even notice the oddities of it, but instead it stands out to us as an audience because something just feels off about it because the whole “decoy” plot is never really explained. Some choose to go with the movie and act like there must be a good reason because they want to be lenient towards it, others choose to see it as terrible because they lean against the film, the real problem is that we have to speculate in the first place because George Lucas doesn’t know how to build his characters properly
@hubertwaliszewski57404 ай бұрын

There was a scene in novel on Coruscant where R2 falls off the platform and rocket boosts his way back up, introducing the audience to his now ability rather than it randomly showing up in AotC. Fun fact, the real reason R2 couldn't fly in the original trilogy is because, as explained in a book that had some extra detail on him, which had these cardboard cutouts of R2 and an X wing, (It doesn't have a title, but look it up.) they explained that after the Clone Wars, they replaced the jet boosters with other useful abilities.

What i like about R2 fixing the hyperdrive is the fact that he's canonically the only character who would know how to do it. He's an Astromech Droid, meaning he was literally designed and programmed with the knowledge and ability to fix ships like the Falcon.

His model was always tripping over everything, his gears kept getting jammed in the sands of the desert where they filmed for Tatooine, and he could barely go up the most minute elevations without tumbling backward. They had to make a bunch of different r2 models to put in for a shot so he’d run smoothly. My theory is, we don’t see him get up on the ramp because they did not feel like going through the trouble of making a whole nother R2 model just for that precise situation.

I think personally, I'd rank these 1. Episode 3. The Anakin Obi Wan fight is incredible. I love it. And the other 3 are pretty good. 2. Episode 1. The Duel of Fates is iconic and probably the second best in the series. 3. Episode 8. Kylo and Rey vs. Guards is fantastic, and the Luke vs Kylo at the end is great too. 4. Episode 5. The battle between Luke and Vader is a great use of suspense and fear. The side cave doesn't stand out as much to me, especially since it's in slow motion. 5. Episode 9. Rey vs Kylo is great with them fighting in different locations, and Kylo vs the knights of Ren is also a great moment. 6. Episode 2. The fight between Yoda and Dooku is great, but the part between Anakin and Dooku is abysmal. You only see them swinging lightsabers in the dark with light flashing across their faces and barely even see their lightsabers connect. 7. Episode 7. Finn vs Kylo is pretty good and watching Kylo chase Rey is pretty good too. 8. Episode 6. The Vader Luke fight is mostly Luke hiding which is not as suspenseful as episode 5. 9. Episode 4. Obi Wan and Vader just kinda poke at each other and that's it.

There's a cut segment from Episode IV that reveals that the whole movie is a story being told to you by a force goblin guy based on the testimony of R2-D2, the main character of the story. I like to think that this is still canon, and R2 is not a very reliable narrator. So like he'll tell you "I'm the most useful droid there is, everyone else died and I fixed the queen's ship all on my own and then she thanked me personally and everyone clapped" and then he wasn't there for 99% of the sequel trilogy so it's all just a garbled version of events Rey told him about years later, which is why so little in those movies makes sense.

Regarding Padme going from Queen to senator, i am pretty sure it is explained well in Attack of the Clones: The Naboo monarchy kind of works like a president, with a new queen being choosen every few years. Staying in power longer would have been unconstitutional. But the people of Naboo liked her enough to elect her senator after her term as Queen had ended. While such a system is weird, it is not completely unthinkable. The Malaysian monarchy elects a new king every 5 years (granted only from a limited pool of regional heriditary rulers). It even "ryhms" like George always likes to do: it was said the people wanted to change the constitution to keep Padme queen. But they didn't do it, showing her selflessnes. Meanwhile Palpatine (the previous Naboo senator) abuses every situation to gain more and more power (= selfish).
@calebbarnhouse4964 ай бұрын
To add to that, Padme being royalty in some way makes her daughter being a future princess feel way more right, as does it make the royalty of naboo appear smarter by sticking to there decoys in all situations where there's any chance the real queen may be in danger, and it makes Quigon appear more clever when he reveals he's well aware of who Padme is, as for why send padme to clean r2d2, cleaning r2 is hardly hard work, it's giving him a light scrub, padme chooses to walk through a desert rather then chill with the ship, there's no way she'd have an issue doing that to maintain her cover

The ending of Empire feels like what they wanted to achieve in TLJ, just executed way better. Han is kidnapped, Luke is incapacitated, 3PO is in pieces, Chewie is distraught, and Leia is fending off the stormtroopers as they reach a dead end. It really feels like the end, the fires of rebellion all but completely stamped out. But then R2 gets the door open, the music swells, and they escape. R2 being this stalwart, constantly moving positive force is what saves the Galaxy. Love this movie.
