Ridge Racer is THE shit, when it comes to racing game music. The series unfortunately is not around anymore, but every since 1994 up until their last game in 2012, they put out banger after bangers, mostly featuring namco in house composers like Hiroshi Okubo (lead composer in R4), sanodg, Sampling Masters AYA and MEGA, Tetsukazu Nakanishi (has done a LOT of Ace Combat). Kohta Takahash was a former member of Namco Sound Team. In all of the games, the style goes everywhere. R4, it focus on acid jazz and DnB, but they have also tackled rock, hard rock with screaming vocals, house, dance, fucking dutch gabber, samba, industrial music, all of it. They done countless remixed album and even DJ sets/concerts. One is about to happen really soon in Japan, to celebrate the series 30th birthday. You must check more Ridge Racer music. Ridge Racer was one of the first 3D polygonal arcade racers. It debuted on arcades, had a PS1 port on release day, and has been on almost every console up until the last one on the PS Vita. The cars, brand and tracks are all in a universe Namco created for these games. They are really fun, but challenging, especially the earlier ones. R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 is considered the peak of the series for many. Highly recommend playing, its on PS4/5 and its main story is very short (40 minutes at most).

To explain how Ridge Racer compares; if Gran Turismo is the realistic car simulator, then RR is on the other side of the spectrum with its simpler, but satisfying physics where the cars move really fast and drift really smoothly. Also the music of course 😙👌

God, that bass is sex. It's hard to describe, but 2000s Japan had a thing with this kind of sound with the smooth tones, the fast percussion, and a classy piano backdrop. I could never find a name to it, but I just know it's a late 90s-2000s japanese videogame vibe I fucking love. After that GT theme the other day, I do hope people have requested the menus from freaking GT4. God, that stuff is the shit.

Ridge Racer 4 is the one of the most goated soundtracks of all time. Genuinely. It hearkens back to classic jungle, house and drum and bass sounds (in fact it's some of the best 90s drum and bass I've heard), it's cool as hell, has been sampled a ton of times by artists I like such as Jpegmafia, and it's one of the rare cases where it also sounds good to people who love good music but don't tend to listen to videogame music. I for some reason always mentally grouped Ape Escape, Tekken, Ridge Racer 4 together, Soichi Terada and people like that, but it's cool to learn the latter two games share composers. And yes, Ridge Racer is still good today - their USP is that they're the most stylish of the japanese racing/sports games imo, arcadey to play but still realistic enough that it doesn't lose it's seriousness. Anyway, if you like Move Me, you need to listen to Garage Talk, Your Vibe and Quiet Curves, some of the hardest videogame songs ever imo.

Oh man, I used to play this game when I was younger. I don't remember any of it except for the exact voice of the narrator going "Ridge Racer Type 4" when you got to the title screen. These two tracks are so good, I wish I remembered more.

Ridge Racer Type 4 was one of the two games I first bought for myself. My very first paycheck at my very first job got me a Playstation bundle with the console, two controllers and two games: Ridge Racer Type 4 and Final Fantasy 8. Good times were had, the rest is history.

Ridge Racer started with the kind of abrasive "Rotterdam hardcore" subgenres of hardcore techno blah blah and was a launch title for PS1. It came BEFORE the Sega racera in 94, so was the first major racing game to start the whole drift mechanic. Was followed by Ridge Racer Revolution and Rage Racer then finally Ridge Racer Type 4 late in psx's life. Following it is the meme "Riiiiiiidger Racer!" for ps2's launch title Ridge Racer V. All the tracks are in the fictional Ridge City and it's mostly a standard arcadey racer. It got into a competition with Gran Turismo, so not to be outdone with Gran Turismo 3 boasting 180 cars, R4 said "Well we got 301." Some of the cars have Namco IP's on them as sponsors such as DigDug or PacMan.

Ridge Racer is my all-time favorite video game franchise! It's a real shame it's dead, but I can always go back and enjoy playing just about any game in the series. I also have a huge playlist of music from across the soundtracks. Move Me is such a powerful song, and easily my favorite on R4's soundtrack. It's kind of a perfect cross-section of the entire franchise's music. And Naked Glow just has such a funky vibe, I can't help but groove to it. Would love to see you react to more Ridge Racer stuff in the future!

We're finally diving into Ridge Racer!!! I remember commenting on either one of your Tekken or Ace Combat reaction videos saying that Ridge Racer is where the two musical styles from those series meet up. Ridge Racer is a treasure trove of amazing music and R4 especially has an amazing soundtrack, but RR5/6/7 and even RR3D all have fantastic music. Glad you're finally getting into the series.

Ridge Racer Type 4 is a must-play PS1 arcade racing game for a good reason. Ridge Racer Type 4 used to be the best Namco showcase, closest to Tekken 3 and Ace Combat 3. With amazing graphics for the 90s era, a stylish and slick UI, smooth gameplay, solid 30 fps, a great story, and an amazing soundtrack, it has its own identity that many racing games nowadays are missing. The music in this one is heavy drum and bass, house, and jungle. In the gameplay, you have a selected soundtrack that you can choose from before starting the race. Also, this game may be set in the same universe as the Ace Combat Series because there is a character who is a race queen that relates to the pilot from Ace Combat.

Also context for move me: You can play any song for each track/level in type 4 but they all have a default track that they start on. Move me is the default track for the second to last track in the game, know has the hardest track in the game as the last track is more of a victory lap stage around an oval. The track is also called heaven or hell (which is such a sick name) and really gives this final battle feel to the end of the game.

I always loved this track. It has this really careful mix of moods, like the composer was straddling the line between a hardcore racing game like Need of Speed and the easy listening, cruising feel of Outrun. Would work in either type of racer as a result.

Yeah I played a lot of RRT4, but I can say that the songs do play on specific tracks. Depending on your racing team selection at the beginning of the game. Naked Glow plays when playing as the Mappy, Pac-Man, or Dig Dug teams on the sunset lit Wonderhill track. Move Me plays on the Heaven and Hell track when playing as Mappy or Dig-Dug, which is set in the same general location as Wonderhill, but has a more difficult layout and set during the daytime.

That feel when you go to skip a few seconds to get past the list of requestors and hear the first half of your username, then go back to find out that, yes, your memory really is _that_ bad. I actually went on Discogs and bought a sealed mint copy of this album with the Japanese-customary paper band on the spine (the aforementioned bad memory is failing me as to what it's properly called) intact and I dare not open it, only love it. Fun fact, Ridge Racer Type 4 was made by the same team that made Ace Combat 2, hence the similar composer! In fact, Ridge Racer's recent history mirrors Ace Combat's very strongly. Like how Ace Combat went into a slump after the PlayStation 2, Ridge Racer's recent games also didn't do very well (not this one, though, R4 is PlayStation 1 and considered one of the best RR games). The last full game, Unbounded, released in 2012 and, just like Ace Combat Assault Horizon, it wasn't similar to the rest of the games and alienated too many fans. Just like the free-to-play Ace Combat Infinity, Ridge Racer did a Hail Mary toss with Ridge Racer Driftopia, a free-to-play game designed to gauge the fans' interest in Ridge Racer. Unfortunately, where Ace Combat Infinity was a resounding success, Ridge Racer Driftopia was.... not. I played Driftopia, and holy hell, it was one of the worst games I've ever played. If you wrecked a car in a race, you automatically lost the race and would need to pay a lot of in-game currency or some real-life money to fix the car. The tracks themselves were designed to make that happen with sudden turns and tight spaces. And if I recall correctly, on top of that monetization, there was an even worse fuel system than the one Infinity had. Driftopia was so bad and played by so few people, it never left _beta_ and failed spectacularly. And we have not had a new Ridge Racer game ever since. One was apparently in production a while back, but was canceled internally before it ever got publicly revealed. Ridge Racer needs an Ace Combat 7, but Ace Combat 7 was only greenlit because Infinity did so well. I don't know what the plan is, but Ridge Racer's gotta come back at some point... right?
