He’s not a percussionist. He’s a drummer. Played with Genesis for years before going solo. The clapping is not off time. There is a delay in ‘sound to mike’ audio that happens in live recordings. Pretty uninformed critique guys 👎

I get the chills when Phil starts on the drums of this song EVERY SINGLE TIME! Amazing! I'm 33 & my parents raised me on everything from The Beatles to Pat Benetar. Journey & Genesis were part of that list. As long as I can remember talking to my dad about the bands, I've known Phil Collins was a drummer. Did you know the lead singer of Foo Fighters was the drummer for Nirvana & he still plays the drums in concert? Phil also did Disney's Tarzan "Trashing the Camp" percussion along w/singing a good portion of the soundtrack.

He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is in his 70's now. His son was on the Domino tour with Genesis recently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).

Hello from Russia. What is this reaction of dead possums? When Phil burns on the drums, my ushanka jumps up a good meter, the vodka pours itself, and my pet bears drum with uranium rods on my home reactor, imitating Phil! My tank stops starting at the sound of a guitar solo, and I myself don't even want to go and conquer the Baltic States and Poland. (even in normal times, we do not remember their existence, but American journalists say that we really want to win them. However, these journalists never say " why? ". After all, there is nothing there but despondency). In general, what is this reaction? I expected more from the damned capitalist pigs! )))

Reactions 4Real, Phil Collins was the drummer for the rock band “Genesis”. He became the lead singer after the original lead singer, Peter Gabriel left to pursue a solo career. The other drummer you see in this video is Chester Thomas. Chester has been with Phil for decades, dating back to the Genesis years. Phil is a prolific song writer whom has written in incredible amount of highly successful, chart topping songs. Phil wrote the songs for Disney’s, “The Lion King” and other famous movies.

Not likely we will ever see Phil playing the drums live ever again. It was severe nerve damage that affected both his back and arms. Hence why he had his son playing the drums for him on the most recent tours. But yeah, anyone who knows anything about Genesis should know Phil was a drummer first, singer second until Peter Gabriel left the band in the 70's. I just think it's an issue of most people not being old enough to remember or never being turned on to early Genesis material these days.

Peter Gabriel was the original lead singer for Genesis, and when he left the band they couldn't find a new lead singer to replace him. They went through many auditions and even picked a guy to sing, but they had to fire him when they tried to record the album because he couldn't handle the songs. So they finally let Collins, the drummer, sing. (He had been teaching the songs to those trying to audition them, anyway.) After they recorded the album, they continued auditioning for new singers to go on tour until they just gave up. This put the band in a dilemma, however. They needed to find a touring drummer. Eventually, they settled on Chester Thompson -- the other drummer in this video.

Phil is awesome! So sad he is only known for his Disney stuff by the younger generation. He was self trained too, and had a natural great ear. When he first auditioned as the new drummer for Genesis, he could hear all the others before him playing a set routine. When it was his turn, he shuffled up to the drum kit in his typical matter of fact manner, sat down, made a few adjustments, and then banged out the routing perfectly backwards. The band were blown away, and the rest is history.
