Beside the word COOL in the dictionary is a pic of Phil Collins just strolling across a stage, singing calmly and holding thousands of people in the palm of his hand- while they’re all holding their breath. Beside the word ELECTRICITY is him walking up the stairs & then a spot hits the drum kit… and EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT’S ABOUT TO HAPPEN!! Icon. Legendary.
@michelleponzio
@michelleponzio Жыл бұрын
What amazes me about this performance is that Phil has everything timed PERFECTLY. He doesn't rush. He knows exactly how fast he needs to walk from one set of stairs to the other in order to get to his drums at just the right time. Gives me chills every time I see this. And the intense look on his face as he sings the lyrics. You can literally feel the anger and pain he felt when he wrote this.

I've been mentioning the same thing. He played with Sting in the UK and all the pianos were out of tune when he got to Philly, but he rocked Against All Odds anyway. Then he joined Led Zeppelin on the drums if I remember correctly. The other thing I keep saying is that he should be Sir Phil Collins already. C'mon King Charles!

I was already a huge Genesis fan in the late 70's and early 80's when Phil started his solo career. I still remember when Face Value came out. Everyone was blown away by this song. There was a period of time in the 80's when Phil was releasing solo albums and Genesis albums and they were both blowing up the charts. Add that Peter Gabriel was also blowing up with Sledgehammer during that time. It was a great time to be a Genesis/Gabriel/Collins fan!

Had to come back to this; your iconic review. The emotion Phil can create is incredible. (watch as he walks off the stage and casually bows his little bow is epic) The audience erupts! the unison clapping is awesome. But Collins attention to detail and holding to the original music while bringing an even greater intensity is mind blowing. I saw him with Genesis in1978 and his charisma grabbed me and did not let go. His drum duet with Chester was other worldly. I was completely unprepared for his presence on stage and I feel fortunate to have witnessed it. Best concert of my life.

For me, this Paris performance is the ultimate. Leland Sklar doing his magic, Chester excellent as ever. Phil of course is brilliant. Darryl's brilliant too. Thanks for doing this. There's a lot to say about this. The steely gaze the timing of that walk to meet the drums rising out of the stage. The vocals when he's drumming. There's a lot of effort going into that yet he keeps a completely even tone. Magical. Phils ability to replicate the studio sound almost matches Nightwish (who go even further and outdo the recorded versions).

It's a visceral basic reaction that comes from this totally iconic song. It will last through generations because it fits in with any of them.

I am 54 years old and grew up when this song came out and not sure why it draws out emotions in me but it does every time. So your not alone. If you want to see the best use of this song, look up “ Miami Vice “ ( a show from the 80’s). look up the clip with this song in it, chilling. Not to spoil it but the premise of the clip is they are going on a call and are sure they are gonna die. So now knowing that will make it more meaningful.

Fellow GenXer here and I understand the feeling. Maybe it’s the whole thing about listening to our cassettes on our Walkman over and over as well as our mixtapes. Less on-demand instant gratification. The music was just so good and still sounds stellar. So glad that we were there when it started!

I love Phil Collins, I've been listening to him since I was a kid in his Genesis times, I love the song, I watched maybe a hundred reactions to this live version and yours is simply the best! Thank you! 💕

Bruh! Saw this concert in Cincinnati and it was one of thee best light shows I've ever seen! Not to mention how great the entire concert was! Back then EVERYONE sounded live exactly like they sounded in the studio!!! Iconic!!!

He is a hugely underrated drummer. His drum parts during the height of the Genesis Prog Rock days are intensely complex and sophisticated. PS: Willie Nelson didn’t perform at Woodstock (1969). He was there at the reboot in (1999 - Saugertes, NY)
