After watching tons of videos on the subject and getting my XLite with R9M Pro just about ready to work with an ACCESS R9 Slim+ OTA, I got stuck. You cleared it up for me. As you say, it seemed obvious after I selected R9MLP ACCESS and it worked. It had been set to R9M FCC, which seemed correct at the time. With so many steps to get everything updated, configured, registered and bound, it was clear I'd made a mistake. But where? I was contemplating re-updating Open Tx and the SD card, and re-flashing the external module, internal module and receiver. You saved me a bunch of time and wasted effort.

Glad it helped. Shame that FrSky are so vague with their instructions. When they were talking to me (they tend not to these days) I did suggest they have a much more explicit set of how to's and tell people what errors they've found so people know if they've already hit a known problem. but, sadly, they decided to carry on as they were

This video is hilarious in hindsight (the process and journey you needed to get airborne). Totally get your excitement for ELRS now. :) I have an R9mm OTA Rx that never used, as was purchased by mistake (put aside due to return shipping cost). Now have a R9M Lite Tx module (non-Pro), so looking to flash ELRS on both. Stopped by to watch as was curious how OTA worked. Have figured it's not bluetooth based, so not ELRS OTA compatable, but should be fine to upgrade via the FC. This becoming a fun experiment to try ELRS on hardware already have. ;)
@CurryKitten2 жыл бұрын
I had kind of assumed that OTA would use wifi, and hence we'd have wifi updating via ELRS. Who knows what they were using, but nothing that translates apparantly! I was going to leave one of my modules on R9, but I really don't see the point, I can't think of a reason I'd ever want to fly it again.

Was hoping you could do a video using an FC for DJI using this module and rx. Need help on the Betaflight configuration and was hoping to get OSD on the DJI goggles.
@CurryKitten4 жыл бұрын
It shouldn't be any different connecting up the R9MM to an FC than it would be with a regular 2.4ghz rx. As far as how you get the OSD on the DJI goggles, I'm afraid I don't have a DJI system myself, so I can't be much help. Again though, this is more about connecting up the air unit to another UART, there's no difference in using the R9
@heartpilotOB4 жыл бұрын
@@CurryKitten Thanks, heard some folks saying full OSD is not supported on the DJI goggles which kinda defeats the purpose
@CurryKitten4 жыл бұрын
That's right - it's because of the way it works with DJI. It's the air unit sending back information via the MSP connection that the goggles will then turn into an OSD, so right now DJI only supports certain types of information that it can display. That said, it has the essentials and no doubt they are adding more in

I was able to get OTA to work with an R9mm OTA and an X-Lite Pro. I think I may have had to update the module to support this. I the latest firmware may not require different versions for FCC and LBT. Just checked and I am wrong about switching. It does require a firmware update. It’s the f-port that can now be set in the radio. If you have updated your module for EU version, and go to do an OTA update, will the communication fail due to the module and receiver not being able to communicate OTA? You might want to try flashing the firmware OTA now that both the receiver and module are flashed with EU versions.

When I got the original R9 I tested in a field where I knew (for some reason) 2.4Ghz would drop out and R9 would always make it through that spot. So I've not pushed the range, but my anecdotal testing suggests it's better in dodgy RF areas, better at low range further out and penetrates better. It's trickier to do a pure head to head - you'll need an area where you can expect it to drop out of the sky but easily recover it - and that way you could fly the same quad at the same altitude on each until it failed.

honestly i would have been surprised if it let you update the firmware on the receiver when the transmitter modules was operating on a different frequency. The only way i could see it working would be to update the receiver first whilst your transmitter module is still on the same band and then update the transmitter module otherwise i don't see how its going to be connecting to the receiver to update the firmware. Honestly though i think OTA updates are more intended for updates within the same transmission system.
@CurryKitten4 жыл бұрын
It would be a bit useless if your RX/TX have to be using the same firmware type to be compatible. Kind of negates the usefulness of OTA updates doesn't it. I would suggest a set frequency is used for OTA

The external module will be needed to bind/fly with the R9 receiver. The question of is this is FrSky only is a more interesting one - it'll certainly need to run OpenTX to work, but I think (not sure though) that the Access functionality comes from the module itself and not the radio, so the right module may also work on Jumper/RadioMaster radios... it woul dneed some testing to actually know for sure though

As far as I was aware you couldn't just set the module to 1W without the use of Flex firmware, it would max out at 500mw for regular FCC firmware. So yes, changing to Flex should give you up to 1W, but it's adaptive, so you don't necessarily know what it's set to. But try some testing against 500mw and check it out

@CurryKitten4 жыл бұрын
What did you update the TX's firmware to? I'm not sure if registration requires you to be on the same level/type. Odds on it came as a straight FCC rx, so have you tried putting FCCon the module and trying that ?

More exactly I updated the R9 Lite Pro's firmware from the radio's memory card. I tried FCC.

What level is your OpenTX on (and what radio) I had to upgrade mine to get the support in there. Although I'm guessing it's at least at a level that supports it else you wouldn't have the right module listed in the external options

this was helpful- however i have just spent 3 hours trying to bind a R9 mini-ota to a R9M module- this was way more complicated than it should have been- its really dumb you have to register, then bind the stupid receiver. @CurryKitten4 жыл бұрын
On EU you only have it for the lowest, I think you have it more for FCC. Using Flex is a way of having it on any power level
@furuleviFPV4 жыл бұрын
Is Flex OK/legal in Europe? (Romania)
@CurryKitten4 жыл бұрын
Flex itself is legal, but what you do with it may not be. Flex simply takes away the limitations imposed on EU/FCC modes and lets you decide what you can use. If worried about the legal aspects, check out what you are allowed to do and stay in there (hint: it's very unlikely you'd be allowed to fly at 1W power)

Add another model to use that RX. To be honest though, R9 is not something I'm going to be using going forwards. It's had zero development by FrSky, and I've already converted my first R9 module and several of the receivers over to ELRS - which is way way better.

How can i change the firmware of r9m lite pro to LBT?
@CurryKitten4 жыл бұрын
Download the latest firmware from the downloads section on www.frsky-rc.com/r9m-lite-pro/ there's a zip with LBT/FCC/Flex, but the one you want on your radio, plug in the module, navigate to it in the radio , long press and use flash external module.

@stevefox37634 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't use the wrong antenna, using an antenna that is built for a different frequency puts you at serious risk of blowing the outputs from the horrendous swr and the reflected power slamming the outputs.
@CurryKitten4 жыл бұрын
There first super-8 antenna was tuned to 900 sitting in between the two. I'm not overly concerned that there's enough in it to screw things up
@stevefox37634 жыл бұрын
@@CurryKitten in cb we are dealing with a minimum of 4w and my home rig does put out 40w straight from its own outputs and in my car I'm running a 100w amp but even at 4w, just being 2mhz out (we tune to the center of a 1mhz 80ch band) I'd enough to put things in the danger zone. Power does not affect the swr, it will be the same at 500mw as it is at 100w but the more power you are running, the more dangerous the bad swr becomes. We aim for a swr of 1.1 on the center ch but up too 2.0 is just about 'acceptable' but anything 3.0 onwards is blown outputs territory and pretty fast :/ The longer a transmission lasts on a bad swr and the higher the output power, the greater the risk, it's heat from the reflected power that kills the outputs. I'm not saying it's 100% guaranteed that your outputs will give up but if it was mine I'd never run it with the wrong antenna knowing what I do.

Frsky, especially their R9 and access crap has become a complete turnoff for me. The R9 stuff has been dubious from the day one. Hated the rare IPEX4 connectors along with el cheapo thin antenna cables on the mini receivers. Sold everything and bought the crossfire system. Much better quality, much simpler, more useful features, much better signal reliability/consistency and range.

Agreed - I think a lot of people took a punt on them when they were trying to buy the 900Mh market by getting the modules out there so cheap. But now they are back to regular pricing, I think less people will bother and just go Crossfire
