First you get angry that all those bad things happen to you, then you desparated and depressed. Next stage is when you start to accept things. You realize the only way to numb the pain is to face it and feel it untill it goes away. At the last stage of suffering, you finally get over it but you know it's a part inside of you that make you the person you become today.

I’m a practicing Roman Catholic, but I love listening to Rabbi Twerski. My take on suffering is that it brings us closer to God by increasing our dependence on Him, thus abandoning ourselves to His divine and inscrutable perfect will so that we can become co-participants with Him in bringing forth a greater good from this suffering. Interesting. I went through a hellish 30 or so years dealing with anxiety and depression and feeling like i am useless and unlovable. Yet when i look back on those 30 years i feel like it has made me a deeper person i am more real and less fake and i think i am stronger having been through all that. therefore the suffering itself is not a bad thing.. it can be good for us. maybe!

In my oppinion there is suffering with a sense behind it but also senseless suffering. In the first case suffering can help us to grow. But some suffering is so hard that it can never justify its sense if it has one. So we have to accept suffering as a part of our lives and we have to avoid it whereit doen't make sense at all and is completeley unnecessary.

I'm just beginning to explore Judaism after years of being disillusioned with the confusing doctrine of Christianity. Plus, if the person Jesus practiced judaism why aren't christians practicing Judaism? I've experienced huge losses especially the loss of my daughter to cancer when she was 18 years old. This explanation of suffering is the only one that has given me any comfort. I wish I had found this sooner. It would have alleviated 15 years of emotional torment and anger with God.

Suffering, as far I can realize, exists for those who do not suffer to alleviate it for others, if they have the will and capacity to do so. It's also simply part of the human condition; If there wasn't suffering, where'd you put your faith if you never needed help? Honestly, I'm Jewish, believe in God, but the best answer to account for suffering comes from Buddhism, not Judaism. It's organically related to desire; let go of desire, and you let go of suffering. That has always made the most sense to me.

It's in Judaism as well. There's a Kabbalah book, very well known among ppl who study Kabbalah that says that all our sufferings come from a lack of things that we wish we had and it's so deep that your head might explode trying to understand it. Anyway, it's not that simple, after all, there's a reason why we want things. Also, in Judaism, there's a thing about reincarnation, which can give another point of view.

All things good and bad work together for the good of those who love, fear and worship the Most High. We may not be shown for days months or years but if we dont grow bitter, remember all of humanity are brothers and sisters and share in the circle of life, we will have a blessing that wouldnt have been possible without that "thing" that caused our suffering. Ironically, am going through a period of intense suffering and pain that the doctors don't understand. It's physical pain and it's very real. Higher level of pain than most would like to tolerate. I don't understand it because I've had it on and off for too long of a time. It may through the grace of God go away. And it seems it might for good. As a Christian there is certainly value in suffering. Some people say, if you get to a certain and age and don't have some kind of pain somethings wrong. Either way, not to heighten the previous sentence one can embrace the suffering for a greater a gentler good. Perhaps the pain was a good thing for a good purpose. I know I embraced it wit the help of the doctors (as I believe a prudent person should). How ironic I found this video.

The truth is, we don’t want to know the reasons behind people’s suffering. If we’d know the reasons, we wouldn’t try to alleviate suffering or stop evil. I think suffering is connected to purpose. Without purpose we often feel we are the victims "oh the world is happening to me and I must suffer through this", however, when we have a purpose we do not suffer. we often move through difficult times or struggles. Think about having a broken leg. Now you know this leg will heal. You may experience pain during the healing process but you also know there is a time frame to the pain, and the goal at the end will be walking with a healthy leg again. Now without that knowledge that there is indeed a goal, or purpose to be fulfilled, if we are to accept that our leg is destroyed and not understand why or when things can get better, that is when we suffer. We introduce fear and uncertainty into the mix. We become the victim of reality instead of the creator of reality. I think Dr. Twerski kind of understands this as he finds his comfort as God. He understands that there may be a portion of time when things are more difficult than others but at the end there is a reward. I believe he is more correct at the beggining that there is no God and that suffering just happens. I believe suffering is the choice to play the victim instead of being proactive and taking a hold of life and doing purposeful things. All things are temporary, unless you make a routine of it. Suffering is a behavioural routine of a temporary emotion.

Hey there, Abraham Twerski and many other Jewish scholars say that trusting in someone or something else is a natural act of our mind and soul. While we might say that we have never deposited our faith and trust in anyone, the reality is that we are actually trusting on something and/or someone everyday. Like for instance, if you take your car to the mechanic for any mechanic failure, once you're given your car back you feel at ease, thinking that your car has been repaired. However, we don't know if that's actually true. What if, by human error, there's some tiny screw that wasn't tighten properly? We don't think about that. We just take our car to drive it as if nothing has happened. That's trust. You trust your mechanic. You trust that your car won't give up on you anymore. Another example would be, every time that we take a step, we don't think about our bones breaking due to osteoporosis or something else. You trust your body. If you're going to sit on a chair, you trust that it won't break. There are a lot of people that we put our trust on. Even if it's for vain things, we're still trusting them. The funny thing, at least to me, is that sometimes we trust people that we have only met a few minutes ago.

I began to look at it like this several years ago: G-d IS the "doctor with the needle who gets all stabbity on the children" The mom goes into the exam room, the doctor looks the kid over... listens to his chest, knocks the funny little hammer on his knees... kid's fine with it, no instruments of torture are as of yet on display.... Doc winks at mama and steps out of the room... mom grabs the little stuffed toy or whatever to soothe the kid's nerves.... doc comes back in through that un-noticed back door (do they still have these? swear I remember them but I'm kinda old...) and sneaks up to the kid, jabs the needle in his arm and the kid squawks for a second until he realizes it's all over, goes back to playing with the toy.... NOW, I KNOW suffering isn't this cut-and-dried.... the gist of it is that G-d does whatever He can to soften the blow....

We suffer emotional pain because we value the things we lose; somebody we love, our freedom, or a never realized plan. Psychology provides a more realistic answer than religion to this question, but in this case Twerski provided basically nothing. Not even a question.

The problem of his argument is this: an all powerful god is not equal to a human being(a mother), so why can't an all powerful god explain to me why there is so much suffering in the world? Either god is not all powerful or god is not all good (so the god created so much suffering). I'm actually scared if an all powerful god exists, it represents god is not all good, I would much prefer an all good god with limited power. The rabbi is a very wise person, and I think he knows his argument is weak too, since in the end he basically stated he just believes God in faith. Then I point out that faith is not a reliable pathway to truth, I could have faith in blowing up a plane so I could go to heaven. If I say killing people is good, and I believe it because of faith, how could anyone change my mind? Faith is therefore very dangerous.

God doesn't cause our suffering. We human beings keep being cruel to each other and to God's creatures, that's what causes suffering. Not God at all. He doesn't interfere with us in any way. But he makes it easier to bare. You can't implicitly trust humans but when you have a great raport with God, you do see a change for the better. In yourself, and in others.

If we dont understand suffering, then it's pointless. It's only like kicking a dog that doesnt understand what it did to deserve being kicked. However, if we could understand WHY we got this suffering, what we DID do to deserve it, we could actually LEARN something from it specifically and grow from it. Yes, we can still grow from it but in a much more difficult way, most of the time directionless trying to grasp at any reason it might be happening but we dont know. Really ridiculous and cruel.

I prefer looking at the Absolut as at something beyond all the polarities, beyond good and evil, beyond life and death. We see death, we see suffering as something bad and we see good luck and the birth of a child as something good but this is seen this way just from our perspective. From the Absolut's perspective there is no good, no evil - It's beyond all that shit. It creates it and does it in harmony. "I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things."
