This was a very interesting explanation but unfortunately only added one more item to the list of ways to "take God's name in vain." I had one explanation that said using his name over something trivial or meaningless (like when we get mad and start swearing - you can fill in the blanks) is taking His name "in vain" (in other words, trivializing it). The other explanation I got was very striking, saying that doing something evil but claiming to do it for God is taking His name in vain. The example given was the Crusades, wherein many people (especially Jews) were murdered for refusing to convert to Christianity. In modern times, Islamist terrorism would be an example. I may have gotten this idea from Dennis Prager, but I'm not sure. I'm wondering if there's a section in the Talmud that discusses this concept, with examples such as these, or if I've been given incorrect information. Thank you for the video; I always learn something new!

Jesus has a very refined gloss on the commandment no to take the name of the LORD I'm vain. In Jesus gloss it does not mean to ignorantly do anything, but only if you blaspheme against the revelation by the Holy Ghost which in all men is the same and well understood.

Again... ********** Then Moses wrote down all the words of YHVH. (Exodus, 24:4) He took the Book of the Covenant and he read it in the ears of the people and they said, “All that YHVH has spoken we will do and we will heed” (Exodus, 24:7) God said to Moses, “Write these words down yourself, because it is through these words from my mouth that I have made a covenant with you and with Israel” (Exodus, 34:27) Theses are the words which Moses spoke to All of Israel … according to All that YHVH had commanded him to tell them. (Deuteronomy 1:1-3, - First sentence of the book of Deuteronomy as to let us know what the book is about.) Moses began to explain this Torah saying …(Deuteronomy 1:5 ) Which other great nation has decrees and laws as All this Torah which I am putting before you today?(Deuteronomy 4:8) And Moses call all Israel and he said to them: “Hear Or Israel the decrees and laws which I am speaking to your ears today, you shall learn them and you shall take care to do them. (Deuteronomy 5:1) Everything which I command you, that shall you observe to do: you shall not add to it, nor shall you remove from it. (Deuteronomy 13:1) And it will be when he (the king ) sits securely on the throne of his kingdom he shall write a copy of this Torahfor himself on a scroll copying from the one kept by Kohanim of the tribe of Levi. It shall be with him and he shall read from it all the days of his life so that he will learn to fear YHVH his God to keep all the words of this Torah and these decrees to carry them out.(Deuteronomy, 17:18-19) So that his heart may not be lifted up over his countrymen, and he may not be turned away from the orders, to the right or left. (Deuteronomy 17:20) This day YHVH your God is commanding you to practice all these decrees and laws with all your heart and with all your soul. (Deuteronomy 26:16, as a subject of all the Moses’ speech as recorded in Deuteronomy according to the recorded text itself) You will setup for yourself large stones and you will plaster them with lime and you will write on them all the words of this Torah (Deuteronomy 27:2-3) and, again, Moses repeats after few sentences And you shall write on the stones all the words of this Torah in a clear (detail) words (Deuteronomy 27:8) … if you will listen to the commandments of YHVH your God which I am commanding you today to keep them and to do and you must not stray from all the words which I am commanding you today either to the right or to the left going after other gods to serve them. And it will be if you will not listen to the voice of YHVH your God to carefully carry out all His commandments and His decrees which I am commanding you today then there will come upon you all these curses and they will overtake you. (Deuteronomy 28:13-15, think - why Moses repeats so many times all the same “which I am commanding you today”, - the words which are recorded in his Torah ? Guess…) … and you will listen to the voice of YHVH and you will carry out all His commandments which I command you today. (Deuteronomy 27:8) If you will not be careful to carry out all the words of this Torah which are written in this book … (Deuteronomy 28:58, whatever Moses tells Israel, all is recorded, just as he says) These are the words of the covenant which YHVH commanded Moses to make with Children of Israel in the land of Moav. (Deuteronomy 28:69, all these words spelled out by Moses that day and recorded in his Torah constitute a complete covenant) … when you obey the voice of YHVH your God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of Torah; when you turn to YHVH your God with all your heart, and with all your soul. Because this Law which I command you today is not hidden from you and it is not far away from you. (Deuteronomy 30:10, now Moses is using other words to highlight the completeness of the covenant spelled out and recorded by him, - “this law is not hidden from you “ - there is no need for commentaries to understand it, “… it is not far away from you” - everyone is capable to understand it.) This mandate that I am prescribing you today is not mysterious or far away from you. It is not in the heaven as if to say “Who shall go up to heaven and bring it to us so that we can hear it and keep it? It is not across the sea as if to say: “Who will cross the sea and get it for us, so that we will be able to hear it and keep it?” It is something that is very close to you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can keep it. ( Deuteronomy 30:11-14) Then Moses put all this Law in writing, and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi… (Deuteronomy 31:9 ) When all Israel come to appear before the face of YHVH your God in the place which He will choose, you shall read this Torah in the presence of all Israel into their ears. So that they will learn and they will fear YHVH your God and they will be careful to carry out all the words of this Torah. (Deuteronomy, 31:11-12) And it was when Moshe finished writing down the words of this Torah on a parchment scroll until he had completed them, Moshe commanded Leviim the bearers of Ark of the Covenant of YHVH saying: “Take this Book of Torah and put it at the side of Ark of the Covenant of YHVH your God and it shall remain there as a witness against you” (Deuteronomy 31:24-26 ) Give your full attention to all the words by which I testify to you today so that you will command your children about them to keep and do all the words of this Torah.Because it is not an empty thing for you - because that is your life. (Deuteronomy 32:46-47) After that, he (Joshua) read all the words of the Torah, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the Book of the Torah. There was not a word of all that Moses commanded that Joshua did not read to the entire congregation of Israel, the women and the children and the converts that walked among them. (Joshua 8:34-35)

denying the verse in The Torah based on denial of The Oral Law is plain wrong. denying Oral Law is silly, Moshe had to explain things which is a clear example of The Law. try to connect to dots as The Torah is perfect and doesn't contradict Herself.

One thing I see is Christian's do not seem to fear the LORD , the Almighty, the everlasting and eternal one , the creator or teach this? Solomon the wisest king says this many times and David put his complete faith in the LORD for deliverance , I wish Christians would see this and the rest of the world and people would see they dont come first but the one thing that truly matters does and until then they cannot understand

I agree that in many cultures, calling ones father by his first name is being rude. For example calling him "William" assuming that William is the father's name is never appropriate. But calling him "Papa William" instead of just plain "William" is to my mind the right thing to do. The same way calling your mother "Mommy Anne" in place of just "Anne" is the right thing to do.
@72Yonatan2 жыл бұрын
In Hebrew language and culture, anyone who says "abba sheli" never utters the name of his father in direct address format. Only when he is honored by being called to the Torah in the congregation is he then called by his biblical name, Yosef ben Avraham [example] - and that is how we use the name of a human father to show honor and respect, even if that father has passed away from this world. But we never apply such a human analogy onto the divine Name of four letters, and when we read from the Torah, we read the Name of Adon - - in place of the four letter Name. We thus avoid the casual behavior which leads to lack of respect and to sin.

@Iyas kelu The reason you don't write God on paper, as far as I understand, is that if there were something to happen to the paper it would also happen to that word. In a digital world I don't think anything can happen to the word to distort it or destroy it. That is why in the Holy Books God is written in full because nothing should even happen to it and you must protect it with all you have.

It is from fear, but not fear of Yehovah the creator of the universe who gives life and who takes life, who gives nourishment to or destroys, a just and righteous king that is to be given glory. Judaism does not believe in hell. That’s a Catholic creation. Each year on Yom Kippur ( day of atonement) we pray for forgiveness, we make apologies, correct any errors that we can during the 9 days pre New Year so that we can be clean and written in the Book of Life for the coming year.
@stephaniereif7790 Жыл бұрын
@@iyaskelu7173 We have a 9 day period each fall (Jewish new year) where we review our year, make apologies, finish projects, pay debts, pray for forgiveness for our transgressions, and forgive those who have hurt us. Then we fast and pray to start the new year. We repent within ourselves, between ourselves and our Creator. We believe all are born good, and all go to heaven. On the other side, we see the error of our ways, and would not want to repeat the wrongs that we’ve committed.

Although Christians use pronunciations of יהוה that can’t be right because, since the diaspora, we do not know the vowels. As I understand it, the Name was said once a year on Yom Kippur by the High Priest with all the congregation praying aloud so that no one could hear it, because it is too holy to hear. And that the vowels were not recorded. I would never be so bold as to try to pronounce it out of respect to HaShem.

It seems to me this prohibition is probably referring to swearing or making a statement in God's name in vain, not simply saying the name for no good reason. If someone was not familiar with Tanach they might assume this prohibition relates to any casual use of י-ה-ו-ה, but anyone who studies Tanach will notice the obvious reality that people back then used this name constantly to swear or make a powerful statement. It seems the pshat/plain meaning of the prohibition is to not use this name in a dishonest or disgraceful way, but if one swears in that name and fulfills that promise it doesn't seem to be prohibited, and if it was most of the characters in the Ketuvim would have a serious problem. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's my understanding of it. ✌💙🔯 (I would add that if people in the time of the Tanach were being so careful with that name, it's strange that they would name themselves with names that contain God's name, like Eliyahu or Hezkiyahu etc., where a person who says that name is literally pronouncing it, possibly minus the last syllable, but my point is they were clearly not averse to using that name so it would be unusual if that was the meaning of the Torah prohibition.)

Obviously we are missing a piece of information in our darkness that would clarify the matter. Swearing upon oath was required if one had a claim to the property of an orphan, for example, but that act of swearing SHAVUA did not include pronunciation of the divine Name. When Eliyahu returns, with the Messiah, he will explain what we do not presently understand.

Shalom all :) Rabbi Tovia is genuinely right on many points but being imperfect, he just may be wrong on this one. The banning of utterring God's name isn't found in the Torah but in rabbinic tradition. Moshe asked Elohim for His Name and this was the commandment. *Exodus 3* 13 And Moses said to God, “Look, when I come to the people of Israel, and tell them, ‘The *God of your fathers has sent me to you;’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ What should I tell them?”* 15 And God said moreover to Moses, *“You shall tell the people of Israel this, ‘YHWH, the God of your fathers,* the God of Abraham, i the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ *This is my name forever, and this is my memorial to all generations.* 16 Go, and gather the elders of the children of j Israel together, and *tell them, ‘YHWH, the God of your fathers,* the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, has appeared to me, saying, “I have surely visited you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt; The following verse confirms. *Exodus 6* 2 Then God spoke to Moses, and said to him, *“I am YHWH.* 3 And I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as El Shaddai, *but I did not make myself known to them by my name YHWH.* The fact that so many prophets of YHWH had the compound signature name of God (YAH) proves that His name is to be uttered, remembered and exalted. There were false prophets who went around making God's chosen forget His name and this was met with strong rebuke. *YermiYAH 23* 26 How long shall this be in the heart of the *prophets who prophesy lies,* even the prophets of the deceit of their own heart, 27 who think *to cause my people to forget my name* by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbor, as their fathers *forgot my name for Baal (LORD/Adonai).* Eli-YAH (My God Is YAH) had to emerge to correct those who called upon BAAL/LORD/Adonai instead of His name. *1 Kings 18* 24 You call on the name of your god (BAAL/LORD), and I will *call on the name of YHWH*, and the god who answers by fire, he is God.” All the people answered, “It is well said.” 36 It happened at the time of the offering up of the offering, that Elijah the prophet came near, and *said, “YHWH, the God of Abraham*, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word. 38 Hear me, YHWH, hear me, that this *people may know that you, YHWH, are God*, and that you have turned their heart back again.” 38 Then the fire of YHWH fell, and consumed the burnt offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. 39 And when all the people saw it, they fell facedown *and said, “YHWH, he is God. YHWH, he is God.”* The call to love YHWH and to love His name includes gentile proselytes. *Yesha-YAHU 56* Also the foreigners who join themselves to YHWH, to minister to him, and to *love the name of YHWH,* to be his servants, everyone who keeps the Sabbath from profaning it, and holds fast my covenant; *Deut 6* 4 *Shema Yisrael, YHWH eloheinu,* YHWH echad. 5 And you shall *love YHWH your God* with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might.

None of the biblical quotations that you mentioned included the narration of the story in the Five Books of Moses about the son of Shelomit, who had no tribe, and who cursed using the four letter Divine Name and who received the death penalty for his behaviour, on the command of YHWH. [Leviticus 24:10-16] Seems to me that you are cherry picking your evidence in order to allow Gentiles to behave poorly in regard to showing the proper level of respect for His Holy Name. Indeed, just a few days ago, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, an arrogant Gentile teacher abused the Name by writing it on a chalkboard in her school, which subjects the Name to erasure, which is forbidden in the Torah. She further made deprecating remarks about the entire Jewish people, all while pretending to promote knowledge of the bible. Please consider the negative ramifications of your argument before making further public statements. Public desecration of His Name is unforgivable, as the Hebrew bible teaches, and even if some guilty individual should escape human courts of justice, he will definitely face the court of the Almighty in the moment after his death, or even in the Heavenly court while yet alive.

I posted a Scripture from the Israel Bible, Psalms 103. It uses the name HaShem. I belong to a group called Torah Life Ministries and someone told me that they believe the term "HaShem" is no different than the Christian bibles replacing it with LORD. The person says; If anything, Lord sound a little more respectful than "the name ", that almost sounds like how Yeshua's name is forbidden to speak, so people say "you know who", or "JC", or "That one" or " Yeshu"... .but in the Bible only those who are despised were to have their names removed from the lips and blotted out or not spoken, not those who were to be praised. The Bible says those who love Yah, will know his name and call on him, like David did. David used his real name, Yah, and Yehovah, to clarify who he was talking about. To give him glory. Is Yah more proper than HaShem? I was told HaShem, means "the name" ,but to whom is it speaking? Ein-sof of Kabbalah or Yah? Just like Lord, can be any number of lords. and God could be any god. So to the name, could be any spirit one serves. She said “I seek to not follow men , but Yah my Yeshua.” We must be careful the enemy has infiltrated many of our synagogues and groups. I see she believes that Yeshua-Yah, is God. Any input would help. Thank you and Shalom.

Lots of people call their parents by their first names. If my parent felt offended that I called them by their first name, they could and WOULD "forgive" this unforgivable "sin". The God of the Bible seems like (1) He is very, very sensitive to slights or critiques and (2) can't let perceived slights go unpunished, both of which are His problems, not ours. I've enjoyed a lot of your videos, even though you too seem unable to answer critiques, but the logic of this one escapes me entirely. I do not think that calling your parent by their first name is wrong at all and I certainly don't see why it is an unforgivable sin and your explanation has been very unconvincing.

I am not Allowed to call G-D VEHOVAH I only tell him Hashem and ADONOI when in Prayer, I read once some one from Hungry teach the Letters had to be change HWYH and that in Hebrew means Existence, There is a midrash that says G-D told Moshe when he passed by him when he was place on a rock for not to see the glory of G-D right after G-D told Moshe to hide his NAME. I read in the Christian bible in Jeremiah that the Jewish People was going to be kick out of the land of Israel for refusing to pronounce G-D s name aha You will say not so for the Jewish Bible says different it says if the nations will learn to call unto me like my People calls me I will also have mercy upon them, I see in the book of Psalms the name of G-D is YAH, I really don't need to know G-D s name I ll called him DAD G-D bless you always.

@Arkim7 Where in the Written Torah does it say there will also be additional requirements in a "Oral Torah". It doesn't make sense to me that the author of the Torah would include it. After all , it should be fairly clear and not need interpretation, if he does not want us to use it. I feel that by using his name in a respectful way, we honor him but to refuse to call on his name is DISrespectul. Should we not be proud of YHWH? Joel 2:26 (Tenakh) says we should praise his name. Hashem is just a substitute, NOT a personal name. Should we not honour our creator and praise him by name? The only SCRIPTURE Singer referes to to support his claim is Exodus 20: 7, which forbids ONLY taking God's name IN VAIN, which goes without saying. But if he intended not to say it at all, the why would he say "not to use it in vain" as well? It would be redundant. I think the Rabbi's have added to HIS WORD, which is also forbidden in the Torah. Can you explain?
@aParadisean7 жыл бұрын
It seems that Singer is contradicting hiself by quoting Deut. 28:58 which commnds to "keep the words of the Law THAT ARE WRITTEN in THIS book" (which tells us throughout to call on the name of YHWH) but then cites the Oral Law, which contradicts Moses writings. Not taking YHWH's name IN VAIN should not be confused with NOT SAYING YHWH with respect or never saying it at all. Singers explanations are always long winded, like most Rabbi's but I would prefer a short straight-forward answer. Then it would be obvious that, like most Rabbi's, he places more emphasis on the Oral Traditions (of the Rabbi's) than on God's Word. Do they really believe that their authority is greater than their creator?

Have you never stopped to consider that maybe the only reason we don't call our mothers and fathers by their first name, (or last for that matter), is simply because we were conditioned to call them "mother" and "father" instead of that? I'm sorry, but this is not empirical evidence to support your claim, or the claims of your faith. Almost every religion on the planet insists that calling their deity by it's name, or in vain, is a sin. Yours is no different.

Oral Torah Invention of Oral Torah brought about a floodgate of theoretical misconceptions which are out of touch and against the Recorded Words of Moses. It would take many volumes to cite those misconceptions rooted in Talmud and put them against the words of Torah for the human common sense to judge, yet here we will only provide a quote which for any sincerely thinking human being must be sufficient without need for further details: God said to Moses, “Write these words down for yourself, because it is through these words coming from my mouth that I have made a covenant with you and with Israel” (Exodus, 34:27, Covenant is to be recorded by Moses because … it is the Covenant) It is interesting to note here that not only God foresaw the possibility of distorting His words unless His words be recorded, as can be seen from above quote,but, even more, He explains His purpose to prevent such distortions: Everything which I command you, that shall you observe to do: you shall not add to it, nor shall you remove from it. (Deuteronomy 13:1, Moses warned against any amendments to this recorded Covenant which he spelled out in his last speech in the book of Devarim ) The way of proper usage of the Written Covenant also … was recorded. Here how it suppose to be used by a king: And it will be when he (the king ) sits securely on the throne of his kingdom he shall write a copy of this Torah for himself on a scroll copying from the one kept by Kohanim of the tribe of Levi. It shall be with him and he shall read from it all the days of his life so that he will learn to fear YHVH his God to keep all the words of this Torah and these decrees to carry them out.(Deuteronomy, 17:18-19, explicitly stated that the source of the Divine Law to follow for a king shall be a written copy of “this Torah” written by Moshe) And here how it suppose to be used by people: … when you obey the voice of YHVH your God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of Torah; when you turn to YHVH your God with all your heart, and with all your soul. Because this Law which I command you today is not hidden from you and it is not far away from you. (Deuteronomy 30:10, there are no hidden hints to be revealed by additional writings, it is “not hidden from you”) It can be safely stated that all other misconceptions of modern Rabbinical Judaism could only creep into Judaism due to this gate wide open to allow all the ideas which go against Torah. The only “justification” of all those new “added” ideas go like this - that there are “hints” in Torah which are “explained” to us in “Oral Torah”… If “Oral Torah” were not allowed to take root in Jewish mind (simply for a single reason of the God’s words in Exodus 34:27), all those misconceptions would loose there foundation. Here is a very limited list of some of the misconceptions “based” on the “Oral Tradition” only, though not supported by Written Torah: - Idea of Moshiah/Messiah -Idea of Olam Habaa / The World To Come - Idea that the text of the Written Torah cannot be understood by common people but by studying the commentaries of the Jewish sages -Idea that Jewishness as a lineage is passed by individual’s mother (direct opposite to the all texts of Tanach/Bible) - Rabbinical introduction of the monogamy against all the texts of the recorded books of Tanach - Rabbinical replacement of the direct commandment of God with the Godly related punishment for it’s rejection: Commandment of Yibum replaced with performance of Halitza (there must be related post on this topic. Although it is not quite relevant to our modern lives, yet it is very revealing as example how arrogant is the act of making into the “God’s commandment” the God’s prescribed punishment, which Rabbinical “law” presents as God’s commandment instead! What was the Rabbinical purpose to do that? The answer is - to make Divinely “legal” the introduction of monogamy, because God’s commandment of Yibum makes monogamy impossible.) - Multitudes of the Rabbinical rituals incorporated into the Jewish “tradition” presented as a part of the covenant and even to be performed as a direct command from God (even Jewish prayers include a direct wording regarding God’s commandment to perform … this and that, which are not mentioned and could not be mentioned in Torah because the events, related to the introduced tradition, happened centuries after the revelation at Sinai. Just as example: Traditional Jewish prayer commemorating the miracles of the Hanukkah spells out, “God Who commanded us to light the Hanukkah Menorah”…)

The Bible says not to take the Lord's name in vain, but God does not say that is the unpardonable sin! Does God so love the world that He made it easy for rebellious children to so easily condemn themselves? I say not! For they speak with unbridled tongues, the truth is not in them, and their religion is worthless. But such are we all, for there is not a single just man who does good and does not sin, for being a Christian does not make us immune to sin, only that we should be resistant, for sin and things that cause us to sin are bound to come, but woe to they through whom it comes. Why did God punish the snake, the man and the woman in the Garden of Eden, but not Lucifer? Because Lucifer had already been condemned, and his fate has been sealed and there was no greater consequence for his actions than that which he had already been given. To accept Christ, we must declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead, and we shall be saved! *Isaiah **14:12**-14* 12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Among us today, are many whom make such claims as to be Jesus Christ, come in the flesh, and they declare with their mouths they are the He, and deceive others to believe the same, for such is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. Is that not the charge for which the Jews had accused Christ, of Blasphemy, when He said, "I have not come to abolish the Law, but to fulfill it!" Jesus was establishing the fact that He was the Son of God come to fulfill His Fathers Will, per Simon Peters own confession, when Jesus asked, "Whom do people say that I am?", and then He asked, "Whom do you say that I am?", and Simon Peter said, "You are the Christ, the Son of God!" God gave us His Word, so that we have the Truth, and if we build our faith on the Word of God, when the storms come your faith will not be shattered, but withstand the seasonal changes in the beliefs of others. Read the Word of God, and test everything; Do not judge the Word by the Word, but the World by the Word of God. The purpose of Church is fellowship, not interpretation of the Word of God, for God needs no interpreter; When God speaks, the waters obey, why do our ears have such problems hearing, that we can see the Truth, and not understand it, and pass that misunderstanding as the truth to others, because they are not in the Word of God themselves! God is a personal God, and it is not your relationship with the pastor that will see you into God's Kingdom, but you're relationship with Jesus Christ!

Perhaps you need to read your bible more carefully, then, starting with chapter 24 of Leviticus. If a sin is a capital crime, then it is obvious that it is unforgivable.

@@72Yonatan *Quote:* _" If a sin is a capital crime, then it is obvious that it is unforgivable."_ What sin are you referring to? It's a vague statement you are making, to say, considering all unrighteousness is sin, but which one is unforgiven? Do you know what the unforgivable sin is? Many would say that "It's a denial of Christ", but that's not the unforgivable sin. For Peter denied Christ 3 times, and yet He was forgiven. We've ALL denied Christ at least once in our lives, and there is no one who can say, "I am without sin!". To understand what the unforgivable sin is, we must understand why Christ was put to death by the Jews. What was His charge? "Blasphemy". The unforgivable sin is _"Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit"_ If Christ was physically put to death in the flesh for being Whom in fact, He IS, the Son of God, how greater the sin, those who claim to be, whom are NOT, and lead others to believe this lie. That is the unforgivable sin.
