Brief tangent on that Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons split: SoS isn't "closer to the style of the original games", it _is_ the original games. As in it is the exact same game dev studio as the old HM games. Natsumi had only ever been the series' over-seas publisher, but that allowed them to retain the rights to the over-seas name even after their business dealings with the series' devlopers ended. The reason Natsumi appears to be fumbling with the HM franchise is because they are literally just creating their own HM knock-offs to capitalize on the name's remaining good will.

It always hurts my soul when an indie game or even a creative concept from a larger studio bombs. There's so many creative ideas out there, and when you realize that that could have been someone's dream that didn't become a reality, it's heartbreaking. The worst part is that a lot of those same people don't get a second chance, either because they lack the resources or the public just doesn't trust them anymore. As humans, we learn by making mistakes. The fact that some devs only get one shot at their stuff is absolutely brutal.

A werewolf game can work if it's split between human and werewolf sections. Make a splinter cell esque collection of stealth mission during the day as the player tries to sneak around and silently take down foes. The game then shifts to a more standard hack and slash game by night as you run around and kill people as a wolf. The game world is on a timer and changing between forms happens automatically, forcing the player to manage their time between both sections wisely and thinking on the fly when they spontaneously change forms in the middle of a mission.

I had a hunch from the start that Balan Wonderworld would be bad, because from the beginning they advertised the sheer number of costumes and that told me their priorities were heavily skewed, but I could never have guessed it would be bad to the extent it turned out to be. And you know damn well they thought it would work out because Mario Odyssey has a ton of power-ups, the difference there is that a large number of those power-ups already have mechanics that have been established over decades as well that there are some that are literally used for a moment very specifically with the rest being multi-layered and fully designed with a couple (like the zipper) being used to change how you interact with the core mechanics, all of this by people who have been making these kinds of games since the 90s.
@dustymcwari44683 жыл бұрын
Another huge issue I have with the excess of powerups, is that in order to fill that 80 costumes mark, they purposely stripped the main characters off several basic abilities like running or swimming, and lots of powerups are also super barebones or downright useless because once again, they had to fill that 80 costumes mark, and the customization aspect is flawed as heck with how some costumes can do more harm than good, they’re easy to lose, and they can even trap the player and force a reset
@elin1113 жыл бұрын
And to follow up on the Mario Odyssey comparison, when Mario doesn't have any capture powerup he still has lots of mobility options that make navigating the worlds fun on itself, meanwhile in Balan the generic kid with no personality is the most useless videogame character in a very long time.

I feel like 2021 highlighted a lot of what is currently wrong with the video game industry as a whole and why I get the feeling that we're going to have another big collapse of the industry at some point in the near-ish future. It's not just a single factor, it's all of the issues coming together: 1. Video game publishers (many of the big names in the business) being generally evil (controversies, cost cutting, general practices) or generally lazy (like releasing mobile ripoffs or pachinkos for easy cash) 1a. The mobile market is a ginormous dumpster fire that no one (specifically governments or regulation) wants to do anything about. 2. C-19 (and other factors) creating global labor and supply shortages. This especially targets the new XBox, PS5, and graphics cards that scalpers seem to love hoarding... but also has had some physical releases affected too. 3. Pushing out products that are clearly not ready for release but do so anyways to salvage the corporate earnings reports. Many of these releases are never truly fixed up, just have bandages thrown on to address most of the major issues. 4. Post-purchase transactions of any kind (DLC, Pay to Win, subscriptions, etc) 5. The cost and time required to properly develop games for hardware. It increasingly grows more with each new console version or GPU that comes out - setting the bar even higher for those that want to experience the latest and greatest in technology

I was expecting that Popeye game on the Switch to make it somewhere on this list. XD What makes Balan Wonderworld more depressing is that this was going to be Yuji Naka’s big return to the gaming world but I think Square Enix really put pressure on him since they said he has “one shot” of making a platformer game. Unfortunately, the game flopped pretty badly, releasing it on the same day as Monster Hunter: Rise which didn’t help, and after this game, Yuji Naka left Square Enix afterwards. Talk about a very depressing story. 😟

Thanks in advance for the List, can’t wait to see which game has the dubious honour of being the Biggest (Gaming) Loser of 2021 😅😅😅 Thanks for the new vid and Merry Christmas RabbidLuigi 🎁🎄💙🐱💙🎄🎁

It still baffles me that even after the stupid "remastered" GTA releases, Rockstar trusted the same company to pump out the definitive trilogy. Like, no, dipshits, the actual definitive trilogy is the originals on the PS2! You blew it! TWICE!!

As soon as you said Team 6 I froze up. Just Saw Rerez’s video on their handling of the Flatout series... They’ve been rushing car games out the door for decades now... wasn’t surprised to find out they were behind Road Rage, the hyped but disappointing followup to Road Rash either.

Balan wonderworld is really a tragic story. If you read the book explaining what is going on in the game everything makes so much sense and you can see the half-decent story they were trying to tell and completely and utterly forgot to actually put into the game. You don’t know what’s going on because, literally, the plot stayed on the paper.

As someone who works at gamestop, let me tell you that i fucking hated balan before it came out. The ad would come on once every fucking hour and i had to listen to some over the top disney but worse style singing when it did. I hate it almost as much as the puyo puyo tetris 2 ad.

"In good conscience" Well there's your problem. You're assuming there's actually any conscience to be had when a big publisher like Square-Enix is involved.

This feels more like a "most disappointing games" list rather than a "worst games" list. Pretty much all of the games you talked about have potential in a lot of place but messed up everything else so badly that it just makes it so much more painful than the low-bearing fruit games where everything is awful.

Balan Wonderworld's title really does upset me more than it should. Balan Wonderland feels so much more natural to say that I've heard plenty of people call it that by default, not even realizing that that's not the game's title. Every person I've heard talk about this game has mentioned wishing that it was named Balan Wonderland. Everyone thinks this game should've be named Balan Wonderland except the people that made it.

As a fan of the World of Darkness ttrpgs.... I have very little hope we'll see another good video game adaptation of that universe. There's another VTM game in development right now( Bloodlines 2 ), but considering the other WoD games released recently I just can't see anything being anywhere near what Bloodlines was. They've got the spirit, and the nostalgia buyers, but none of the stories have been worth a damn.
@amirgarcia5473 жыл бұрын
Considering that Bloodlines 2 has been stuck in development hell and basically had the entire team replaced recently, I don’t think anything good will come from it if it even ever comes out, sadly.

I thought it was Balan Wonder"land" for the longest time. In fact, when I heard it called Wonderworld, I thought perhaps it was an announcement for a sequel or spinoff. I'm almost 40 and that was legit my first ever Mandela-effect-moment.

I was honestly super hyped for werewolf the apocolypse. playing as a badass werewolf tearing shit up in combat seemed super fun but... then there was the poor animations the side quests without indicators or a well done map to help you complete said side quests the quadropedal werewolf form just being a glorified run button just...a lot of the game was severely underbaked and had so many pitfalls that gaming has since moved past years ago now (like the map/side quest thing( that this was one of the only games I have ever almost immidiately (like day after) just brought back to the store and returned.
