It's not on the level of Tug of War, but the Puzzle Boy sidequest from SMT Nocturne is one of the most tedious yet frustrating minigames I've ever played. On the surface, it doesn't sound so bad. You're playing an in-universe videogame owned by a little boy who dares you to beat it. It's twenty levels of controlling a Pyro Jack to do block pushing puzzles. That doesn't sound too bad, but not only do all twenty levels have the same music, you need to beat them all in one sitting if you want one of the magatamas. Speaking of the magatamas, they're an outside factor that greatly affects the feelings of players on this minigame. If you want to obtain Masakados Magatama, the best one in the game, you need to obtain all the previous ones. Including the one related to the Puzzle Boy sidequest. This means that if you want your best piece of equipment, you'll have to slog through this minigame in one go. As a result, it's easy to view it as pointless tasks on your way to min-max that have nothing to do with the combat system you're here for. The worst part is that New Game + doesn't preserve your magatamas or your levels, so every time you want Masakados Magatama for one of the routes, you have to put up with it all over again.
@riemaennchen2 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah I remember that one. The one time I did that I tagged in and out with a friend of mine. I did a couple of levels, then he did a few and then I went again. If one of us had to all of them the other one probably would not have survived that day.^^

Replayed SMT3 last year, and while I beat Puzzle Boy with little difficulty the first time I played it, I had to resort to a walkthrough for two levels because the repetitive music at 2am was causing my brains to dribble out my ears. As for the big the cat segment, the frog hops off your line randomly because you’re supposed to move the control stick left and right once it latches on and it work 100% of the time. As someone who doesn’t think it’s as bad everyone say it is, I do think that the big stages suffer from being a massive pace breaker and you have to go out of your way to find the instructions in the game’s options to find out about the control stick trick, the game doesn’t tell you that through normal gameplay.

The biggest tip I have for it is to get Wedge right after the first match. He's fucking OP as hell for the first 20-30 levels, and eventually transitions into the game's best goalie. I can understand why not everyone loves Blitzball, but if you think that an optional (and easily exploitable) pseudo-sport is worse than Final Fantasy X's abysmal chocobo racing sidequest then you're just plain wrong. @@Cool70sfreak The game was clearly designed to be a character study especially between Tidus' and Yuna's romance and the nature of faith in the world. But Tidus is a bit of an idiot, and not just because of the whole "fish out of water" thang, so I found him a bit harder to relate to. The world building was also a tad too ambitious, as you had to accept that a world where most of the world's small population lived in basic huts could sustain a pseudo-modern city with a massive stadium (and that said coastal city is able to survive in a world revolving around Sin). You also had to accept that the Yevonites, who openly use forbidden machina weapons in their temple city could have lasted as long as it has without causing a public crisis of faith. You also have the issue of FFX's game world being very linear in nature to accommodate the Summoner's pilgrimage, but feels unnatural outside of this context. Compare this to, say, FF7 whose game world and mechanics revolve around the concept of technologising magic and mix elements of environmentalism and cyberpunk-style economic class warfare. Magic and skills revolved around materia, which was deemed a necessary evil by Avalanche, rather than based on a traditional job system which few people in that post-modern world would have.
@AluminumFusion2211 ай бұрын
@@TheBlackSeraphThe civilization living in huts is a intentional decision by Yevonites who believe that if they become too advanced, Yevon will send Sin to destroy their cities again. Wakka explains it to Tidus early on in the game. The Al Bhed relying on machines and having not been wiped out by Sin is definitely a problem, though.

Sorry, I really love blitzball. I love the rpg sports aspect of it, even if the random chance fail is kinda meh. At least it's not TETRA MASTER levels bad for randomness plus, you can completely trivialize the game with the right people to get all the stuff you want. Zev ronso, Shaami, Naida are all you really need, but even then getting a good goalie can help. But, Zev ronso wither pass 3 lets him level up extremely fast, Shaami gets ridiculous end/shoot for a forward so she's great at putting in the goal and Naida is a really stellar blocker. And all are super easy to get and you won't really want to trade them out (maaaybe Zev if you play past level 70...) And always always always keep one person (or maybe even two) meant to be low level on your team. Always. So the average level drops for the enemy.

Blitzball does have a lot of RNG, but once you figure out the mechanics, it's really easy to win, and it's incredibly easy to absolutely break the game and make it trivially easy. I don't disagree with you picking it as a bad minigame, though I think you should have included that it's required to get an ultimate weapon and the overdrives, and you have to play a LOT of blitzball to get it. This was actually a bit contentious upon release for a rather unique reason. At the time this was released, the Venom comic series was in the middle of a mega-arc where the Avengers fought against Knull. Knull was/is one of the most powerful Marvel villains ever, and Venom had absorbed a bunch of codexes to help defeat him. These made him crazy powerful, like planet-busting powerful or even greater. There was a lot of discourse over whether or not Death Battle should have included this. They explained in their podcast that they chose not to include it because, essentially, these sorts of power-ups happen a lot and are almost never permanent. In this case, they were right; Venom went back to normal power before the battle with Knull had even ended. There are some panels being fed to the casual crowd of Venom beating Knull within an inch of his life, but that was actually Captain Universe (who is, well, a superhero universe) taking the appearance of Venom for intentionally ironic reasons. Eddie Brock became the King of Symbiotes later, but the Venom Symbiote went off on his own adventures, and Eddie's title didn't come with any new physical powers either, just some more Symbiote mind shenanigans. Death Battle made the right call.

If I remember right, there is a trick to catching fish, in Big the cat's gameplay, but I don't remember it off the top of my head. I do know that the game never explains it, you have to either figure it out on your own or get very lucky

OKAY, my DEFENSE for my like of Number 3. I look at the world through Rose Tinted Glasses. I always try to look through and see the positives more than the negatives. The minigame in question... Takes a LONG ass time out of the game. It's a JRPG where the minigame in question, if you're aiming for your ultimate weapons, can take you TENS TO HUNDREDS OF HOURS added onto your timer, if you want to go through with it. And I genuinely enjoy smoking teams as I get better and better. The downside is yes, it's tedious, repetitive, and matches take way too damn long... 10 minutes PLUS prep time...
@khodexus49632 жыл бұрын
Some people want a standalone Blitzball game not because the original minigame wasn't flawed, but because what we see of it in the cut scenes looks like it could be alot of fun if given a full game treatment. Also, you did almost of the top 10 BEST mini games 6 years ago and included Blitzball on there as well. Not very consistent of you.

Twisted Metal Head-On! had most of its unlockable cars and levels hidden behind mini games, most were forgettable but simple enough to just finish and forget about, but the Greece level featured a decently sized platforming level…in a game that is famous for having slippery fast handling that makes it difficult to stop instantly….it was legitimately one of the most annoying experiences I’ve ever had as a human

Heard people complain about the golf minigame in Wario Land 3, to which I say git gud son. That said, the reward for getting the eight large musical coins in each level is a red cloud course in the area of the game where you can play through different coloured courses provided you have the coin and found the crayons that let you open it. My advice? Beat the final boss again, get to the end and make Wario giving you two thumbs up while a jaunty tune plays and the word PERFECT! hovers above be the reward for all your hard work.

5. It was so bad that a video on remaking Sonic Adventure completely threw it out and changed Big to be closer to the rest of the cast. 4. What's funny is the underwater controls in the first game were so bad that the developers decided _this_ was better. 3. Why is it even underwater? 2. Why do these even exist? Shoehorned-in Wii controls? 1. Fun fact: It's actually physically impossible to beat Pedal Power with just your thumb.

Blitzball is an obtuse minigame a little hard to understand at first, but once you put it on manual and understand it's more an RPG+manager minigame than a sports one it gets really fun. I wish they put more effort into it, tho, Jetch shot is completly broken and it is not fun how the randomizing prizes makes a lottery of getting Wakka's best weapon
@jypsridic2 жыл бұрын
Blitzball is boring but it certainly is not random. Once you understand it it becomes 100% predictable, and that prediction is 'my guys score every time they shoot from anywhere in the sphere then I can just chill behind my goalie while I do something else in the room waiting for the clock'

I'm old enough to have played Mario Party 1 at release in high school, and was one that got blisters from those joystick rotation games. I think having one or two sole examples of that mechanic are required for the "retro remastered" experience Superstars was going for. You have to pay homage, just don't have it come up as commonly as other games.
@CybeastID2 жыл бұрын
Nintendo got *sued* over that mechanic and lost. So no.
@MrMariosonicman2 жыл бұрын
@@CybeastID honestly the worst problem of the minigame was for the system it was designed on, if that minigame and its rotation controls existed on gamecube there probably wouldnt of been a lawsuit since a gamecube control stick is alot more comfortable/soft then the hard plastic of an N64 stick.

I think pretty much everyone can agree that Scorpion Extermination is the worst side job in No More Heroes, so naturally, it was the only side job brought back for the sequel I know he had barely any involvement with NMH2, but if that isn't a Suda move, I don't know what is

Big's fishing story isn't as hard as people make it out to be, you can get froggy's attention easily and always guarantee he bites by just moving the lure with the d-pad or wasd depending on your version

Big the Cat's campaign in Sonic Adventure really shouldn't be on this list since it's a required part of the game and not a mini-game. Plus, catching Froggy is patheticly easy cuz once you get his attention and he bites the line all you have to do is press down on the control stick to hook him (or any fish for that matter) and the worst he does is occasionally fight back, which he's not very good at with him being a 500g creature unlike the 1000g and especially the 2000g fishes you have to catch for the B and A missions for Big in Sonic Adventure.

I don't remember bad minigames being that big of a deal in the games I grew up with. Only disliked a handful of the ones in Mario Party, and any game that did have a meh or bad minigame also made it optional. The only one I can remember hating was that terrible sinus minigame from Bowser's inside Story.(yes I did hate the carrot minigame like every kid who had this game, but it's really easy for me now)

Top 5/10 Catharic Bosses (not only satisfying for thr player to beat up, but also a means for (one of) the player character(s) to release themselves from a toxic situation) (e.g. either Shadow Kamoshida or Cognitive Wakaba from Persona 5)

If a “best mini games” video is made, I would recommend the cabaret club mini game in Yakuza 0 or Yakuza Kiwami 2. The amount of time I’ve sunk into that weirdly addicting part of the game that isn’t required is unreal.

I'm a bit sad that you missed out on Breath of Fire 3 and it's many mini-games, the worst of which are mandatory, random and overall just bad (namely the Vinegar Well, the Treasure Digging, and the 'Shisu' making). Sadly, one of my favorites is mandatory (the Salvage Pull with Garr), but because it was potentially interesting, you only get to play it once. As for fishing, I feel like it's included in a lot of games as either a way to get early money/power or intended to be a relaxing side activity for when you want to play but you don't want to progress the story.

"Tiger! Tiger!" from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a personal dishonorable mention. The LAST thing I want to do for making a character stronger is play some stupid mini-game that doesn't even control all that great and reminds me just a tad too much of the Deep-sea Treasure Diving mini-game from The Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass. I'd also say those stupid barrel rooms from Tales Of The Abyss are also pretty...*snrk*...abysmal...though in hind-sight that's probably just me not liking sliding puzzles all that much (special mention going to Runescape which...oh boy do the high-level Treasure Trails LOVE having them! >.< )

Haruka's section in Yakuza 5 comes to mind. I get that the Yakuza games are full of minigames, and you occasionally have to do one for the main story. I'm not against that. But having to do the same two rhythm games ad nauseam for a few hours in a series where the main gameplay is FISTICUFFS ACTION was a pretty ballsy move that fell flat. It's not even that they're bad minigames or songs, it's just so repetitive and drawn out that after the first two times in each game you've pretty much seen it all. I respect the effort to try and give Haruka a playable part, and I did like the story, but being FORCED to do the same two minigames over and over turned what was a pretty great game into an absolutely tiring slog. I recently started replaying it and I just straight up skipped Chapter 3 to avoid it (very glad I had a save at the start of Chapter 4) At least you get to play as Shinada immediately afterward.

It’s sort of funny, the mini game from ff10 that I hated the most wasn’t the blitz ball, it was the stupid chocobo riding one that was tied to the ultima weapon. I happen to be playing xenoblade 2 right now and tiger tiger is bringing back awful memories What I can’t stand about the mini games the most is when something substantial in the actual game is dependent on the performance of the mini game. It’s like fine you want to put in this nostalgic, sentimental vanity component in, that’s fine, but why ‘force’ people to play it.

Being fully honest, Sonic Adventure 1/DX 'fishing' was far less of a PIA than the bad parts of any contemporaries 3D mascot games bad point. Anyone who wasn't lobotomised could figure it out and blow through it in a few minutes. Tone Deft as it was, with how hard Sega pushed fishing games on the Dreamcast; made sense why it was there. 14:10 Also, here I was thinking the ever increasing prices on N64 controllers was due to Mario 64 Speed runners, LMAO.

Mini games in gaming can be a fun experience or a really dwelling and awful experience depending on how the mini game is structured. Sadly in my experience I encountered more of the awful ones and they're plenty of bad ones to choose in gaming.

FFX is my favorite final fantasy game, but man I hate having to play through blitzball every playthrough. Blitzball shouldn't have been a stat based RPG type mini game and instead should have been something like super Mario strikers, you know, like the way they showcased it in the intro? I'd be down for a standalone blitzball game, so long as it's a sports games and not a crappy version of TFT

There was a segment in the original DBZ Budokai that had one of those spinning analog stick things as fast as you can to beat Raditz I think it was. Literally made my palm bleed and took nearly a month to heal fully.
@wariodude1282 жыл бұрын
I know exactly what it was. You played as Piccolo and had to charge up the special beam cannon AKA Makankosappo. If you didn't do it fast enough, Raditz would break free of Goku's hold and you'd have to try again. If you play as Goku, you just have to move him back into the firing area while Piccolo charges it.
