I am at this exact stage. I've been casually studying magic for over 5 years so I'm at still just "doing tricks". I do have one routine fleshed out. It's a routine about "coincidences" using Kolossal Killer, Continuous Do as I Do and IG as a closer. It's a killer; it absolutely slays audiences. But I wouldn't say it represents me. I invented it by trying to invent a strong routine with tricks I already knew. I sure can think about the ways to make the patter more represent me, but the fact is the routine was born before that fact. That being said, I am definitely struggling with trying to figure out how to make my magic more of an art form than just performing tricks, but I feel like I first need to spent time performing tricks before I can understand what direction would I want for my magic to evolve. DarkSaruman no wrong path listen to your heart what ever your drawn to work on do that. There is no right path as long as you are honest and critical with yourself you can grow.

I've watched magic specials on TV my entire life but watching you and then hanging out with you that weekend was completely different from anything i'd ever watched on TV. I was floored. Great video. Gillis was the fucking MACK. Knew him for many years and loved the guy. Finally saw you for the first time at the Castle this month. Very inspiring!! Though I disagree w/ the notion that one shouldn't base their show/personae on a single type of prop. I get that you're encouraging folks to be more original and creative, but I think an act's theme can be about anything, including a certain type of magic. Obviously am biased lol. Talk about what makes you tick and use magic to illustrate it. Excellent point. I‘m an ad guy and actually excellent advertising is quite similar to excellent magic. Also a lot of psychology and imagination is involved. Your thoughts made me think, should I build my routines on my advertising background? Incould talk about complicated clients, unpredictable customers, the creative process. What do you think? Would you find that interesting?
