***PLEASE READ!*** *WIRE-BOTTOMED FLOORS* There are plenty of pet KZbin channels that demonize wire-bottom flooring, but they fail to do their research or understand why it is used. It is a common misconception that a GOOD wire-bottomed floor is bad for rabbits. Wire flooring (especially the thick gauge flooring I have) keeps rabbits out of urine and waste at all times, and also aids in adequate ventilation, which prevents disease. Sore hocks, or sore feet, is typically a genetic problem or is caused by soiled living conditions. Rabbits have plush fur on the bottom of their feet and are quite comfortable on the wire. I can assure you that my rabbits do not have sore feet 😊 *CAGE SIZE* The size of my cages is nearly double the amount of space that the American Rabbit Breeders Association recommends. Please note that my rabbits are not considered pets, they are livestock, and they have a job to do. That being said, they do get out frequently to explore my fully-fenced backyard. They have plenty of room to flop and binky (and they do quite often, especially when I come out and talk to them!) *SELF-SUSTAINABILITY* I started raising rabbits for meat because I wanted to stop turning a blind eye to the life of the animal in the grocery store. Raising your own meat is a real eye-opener and it makes me so much more grateful for what they do for us. Instead of paying for a factory farm to raise my meat in crowded or unsanitary conditions, I get to let my meat rabbits graze on grass, have room to run, and live their days being happy. If you are a vegetarian or vegan, I commend you as well, because we are both making a positive impact on our world. *PROTECTION FROM THE ELEMENTS* Since building my hutch, I have weatherized it (and winterized in winter) Please feel free to watch my recent videos to see how the rabbits are protected from the elements. *HAY AND ENRICHMENT* A lot of people have made comments on how I don't give my rabbits hay, and it just makes me laugh. My garage has a wall stacked with haybales, and we go through A LOT. The rabbits get free choice hay all the time. They also get toys and chew sticks often. Just because you can't see it in this ONE video doesn't mean it doesn't happen 😉

I enjoyed watching this build, and I slowly fell in love with it all. Then, you showed it lit up at night, so now it’s a must have because that was just beautiful. I watch so many channels because I’m new to all of this and am interested in growing our own food for many reasons, with high priority being the happiness and well being of my critters. I have watched so many that stuff animals into such a small space and I cringe. While I appreciate the endless amounts knowledge they bring to the table, I am loving that you also thought about the happiness of your rabbits. This is by far my favorite set up I’ve seen and I’ve been binge watching rabbit hutches today. Thanks for sharing. Now I have to locate the upgrade video because we do get pretty cold winters here.

A suggestion to extend the life of your hard work. Place each of the legs on a paver stone or even just a red brick. The pine you used will absorb moisture being in contact with the ground (even though it's painted). Pine will begin to rot within a couple of years, if it's constantly moist. You may also want to treat the bottom 12" of each leg with a water sealant, each year.
@TealStoneHomestead3 жыл бұрын
I have the front legs standing on wood boards right now but in the long term I would love to find some concrete! 😊 water sealing is a good idea.

This absolutely ROCKS!! I just learned during the pandemic how much I love to build! I made one almost the same, but without plans I had a few issues. Now, I am hoping to expand as I get better with rabbits, and change breeds, so I am hoping to start this project next week! I even think I may paint it now that I see how gorgeous it is with paint. I also appreciate you showing how you will winterize. I believe most livestock do better outside, but with the past two winters seeing polar vertices -50, I thought I'd have to stick them back inside the greenhouse again. But I have added stock, so that would have only allowed for most of them in there. I am binging your KZbin today. Thank you so much!

Just a tip, you should put more padding like a mat or something maybe a blanket on the wire floor. This will help the rabbits feet. For the poo and stuff to fall down still you can put mats on half of the cages.
@TealStoneHomestead3 жыл бұрын
When I was younger I actually had a rabbit ingest and choke on fabric, so I don’t like putting anything like that down in their cages. they do have plastic resting mats but overall I find that they prefer to lay on the wire. It is a very thick gauge and comfortable for them 😊
