I met and petted a giant Anteater at an outdoor traveling petting zoo around 1981. It was at a mall that I was working at. During my lunch break I went out to check out the zoo. There were the usual goats, a donkey, a pony, etc., but this one pen had a giant Anteater. It was sort of walking around the pen, and the wire pen was short enough that I could reach over it and pet the Anteater as it walked past me. I was surprised at how coarse it's fur was...it was literally exactly like petting a broom. I was about 21 years old at the time, and I can still feel what petting it felt like, to this day. It was a very cool experience. That being said, I also remember looking at those claws and thinking "wow, no wonder they can tear apart mounds", but it never occurred to me at the time that an anteater could ever tear apart a person. That wasn't something I learned until years later. So not only do I feel lucky to have actually petted an anteater, I kind of feel really lucky to still be around to tell the story!

@cakeleighh25363 жыл бұрын
I can add a few things for the Axolotl and bunny. Bunnies have to eat their own poop cuz they’re hind-gut fermentors, meaning their process of breaking down their food before they absorb it is right before they poop. Meaning that they have to actually eat it again to absorb it into their body. The poop that’s meant to be eaten is more liquid-y, compared to the singular pellets, and it’s all bunched together. Therefore if you have a rabbit and your cleaning out the pen and you see this poop, don’t clean it up. People who too thoroughly clean their rabbit’s cage can starve their own rabbit. However, if you leave it be, and it’s still there in a few hours, then it’s better to clean it up as the rabbit’s had their chance and hasn’t eaten it. If that’s the case though, be sure to keep an eye out on the rabbit’s health and look for any symptoms of lethargy, or more resistance to eat, as it may indicate health problems. For Axolotls, idk he didn’t state this, but they stay in their premature states because it allows them to use embryonic stem cells. This is what allows them to grow back basically anything on their body, however, the new part may not be as affective the second time-or third time- around. For example, if an Axolotl lost their limb, it will grow back but it may be a bit shorter than the it’s previous limb. As for why they’re critically endangered but still in the pet trade, although hunters are a problem in the wild, the major problem in their only habitat has polluted water and invasive fish. This means that even with reintroduction programs, the waters will continue to kill the axolotls. This is why they’re still being sold as pets, because it keeps their population numbers up and away from extinction, meanwhile people are working to get the lakes habitable once again, and then reintroduction programs can be effective. If axolotls could sustainably live in their natural environment, I think CITES would be a bit more strict on Axolotls in the pet trade. This being said, don’t ever impulsively buy an axolotl (that goes for any fish really), as their needs are very specialised and even very experienced owners had troubles keeping them. I’m a level 3 animal management student, hi, and we learn quite a bit about the husbandry/biology of common pet animals, like rabbits. But for my exotics assignment I did axolotls since it was about conservation, husbandry, and pet trade, and the axolotl is a very special case. I hope anyone who reads this just knows a tad bit more now. ☺️

I learned something pretty cool about a year ago. I was killing time in a store while waiting a but in a store with a moose head on display. I asked outloud, just talking to myself really and not expecting an answer, 'I wonder why no one ever domesticated moose.' The owner of the store said, 'Oh people tried.' He went on to say that a lot of attempts were made in the 1800's but too many people died. He said that like most animals, they can be tamed if gotten young, and even teaching them to be ridden wasn't an issue. The problem was that unlike horses, mooses instincts to panic were too strong. Moose would panic whenever something unfamiliar happened suddenly. Even something as small as hearing a loud noise. When moose panic, they flail their heads wildly and attack anything unfamiliar in sight. Oh and like anteaters, moose do not see very well. Many, many people were mauled and/or trampled by their moose after being thrown. The effort was eventually abandoned.

FYI on wild rabbits: all of them (at least in the US) are brown and smaller than a typical domestic rabbit. If you see a rabbit with other coloring (or even sometimes a brown rabbit) it is likely a domestic rabbit. In this case, it's best to call a rabbit rescue so they can wrangle the rabbit. The coloring of some domestic buns (like white) also prevents them from camouflaging thus sticking out to a predator strolling by. Additionally, domestic rabbits don't really have the survival skills of a wild rabbit.

I once saved a baby bird that fell from the nest It was a grackle and it had fallen at least one story from the roof of a home depot. I watched people pass it by, glancing at it or ignoring it. I stepped in to check on it while an entire flock of the fuckers surrounded me, anxiously hopping about on their perches. It was alive, just stunned, and strikingly had no broken bones. It was in severe shock so I went to the store nearby, got some cat food and warm water, soaked said food and let the grackle eat that while I gave it a sponge bath to remove the mites all over the poor thing. After all of that I had an employee return the baby to as high as we could manage, on top of a palate, and the birds eventually picked it up and returned it to the nest. Fun day.

Then a bunch of the idiots entered the kitchen and somehow ate the FRUIT, some mangos, guavas, and of course, bananas... It actually surprised me, because I assumed that they just liked plants and vegetables... For some reason. THEN one of the idiots got trapped on a rat trap, and nearly fucking died, but we managed to get it out scared, but unharmed... *THEN* some of the idiots got chased by our dogs and also nearly fucking died. One of the idiots tried to commit suicide by chewing on its own fur, but we stopped it. And that happened on a SINGLE night!! Luckily, the dogs woke us up and we could catch all of them. The one on bear speed prompted a thought: it's not that all other predators are surprisingly fast, it's that humans are likely the slowest predators on earth. We compensate in two methods: throwing and distance. No animal has an arm like a human throwing a spear, and we may not be as fast, but we make up in gas mileage. We use something rare among predators: pursuit predation. Most predators are ambush predators. Slowly stalking until they get the jump on their prey and close the last distance quick. Most animals adhere to this 40 sec fight/fly dynamic. Predators on their fight to get close a kill quickly, and prey on their flight to get the hell out of dodge. Humans meanwhile don't care if the initial contact is a loss. We'll just follow our prey until it gets tired and stops running. Then we show up again. The prey runs until it's tired and we follow it. It finally thinks it's escaped and can rest and recover, but guess what? The humans are coming over the ridgeline again. It tries to run but it simply doesn't have the energy anymore, and we finally close the distance and kill it. As far as predators go, most will kill you if you get close, but we are simply Terminator robots that don't get tired and will single-mindedly follow them down until they have nothing left to give.
@luciphyx.27332 жыл бұрын
Aswell as we have amazing stamina. While not all people can run for hours like wolves or African wild dogs we can still keep on walking and walking. We also aren't muscle dense and still have a layer of fat so humans are able to swim. We can pretty much cover any terrain.

@@luciphyx.2733 with training, it's not hard to run for a very long time at an elevated speed. i did a training run late last year where i ran 10 miles in under an hour, so i imagine that people who are dependent on that method of hunting for food would be far better at it than i.

Also know we're tough as fuck. Equines and other herbivores will die if they get a leg (or technically a finger) broken, we can endure and even survive amputations while still being dangerous. Most predators use their teeth to hunt, we can make our food paste and still keep stabbing/punching/kicking. We can get over massive damage, break a lot of bones and lose a lot of blood and still come back for a grudge match, and that's before we invented medicine.

I went down to check on everyone and she was eating one of the babies. Luckily she only ate the leg off, me and my mother took all the babies to the vet. They bandaged up ones leg, I named him stumpy. We tried raising them ourselves but sadly they all passed away. Was a very traumatizing experience for me, and that day I realized how crazy nature really is. Miss you Flicky, Nightengale and all the babies that didn't make it. Nope, they're in the Feliformia suborder. That means they're more related to cats, just as another replier said. Other Feliforms include Fossa, Meerkats, Mongoose, and of course true cats. Hyenas are just really weird cats in a way.

Even thou I knew rabbits have dark sides to them that still isn't gonna stop me from loving my pet rabbit Milo. He would popcorn / jump on our carpet and he licked and rubbed his chin around our fingers. Heck I remember one time I cried and he came up to me and licked my cheek (yes I washed my face after that, but it was still sweet). Unfortunately we had to put him to sleep because he had tumor on his kidney. For a rabbit he had a more personality of a dog and the 4 years we spent together I will always treasure❤🐰

My family raised rabbits, and trust me, it's truly that bad. As soon as we realized which females chronically ate their babies, we tried not to get them pregnant again by putting them in a sorority pin. It was just too gruesome. For new mothers, we had special cages so they were separate from the others, able to relax, not get beat up (which was a huge problem for pregnant mothers). This cage was about the size of a couch with a birthing box and tons of hidey-holes, really trying to keep her calm and well-fed. Then on the day we knew she'd deliver, we were all on high alert. The minute she gave birth, we swooped in and rescued the babies. This really was a race against the clock. If she birthed in the night, we might wake up to find nothing but blood and maybe a decapitated baby head in the birthing box. Sometimes she wouldn't even wait. She'd be birthing Baby#2 while eating Baby#1, so we really had to swoop in there and rescue them. A few of these mothers would fight us and be upset that she could NOT eat her babies. Like, she really, really, really wanted to Cronus her kids. Not to mention that warren rabbits are absolute fascists. "Watership Down" was not even joking. We had about 80 warren rabbits, and we'd watched the babies getting trained with drills and learning the thump warning system. Adults would kill any bunnies who couldn't learn fast enough, or kill them for showing disrespect to the warren guards. We had one we simply called "Guard" because my mother felt "Gruppenführer" was inappropriate. She should have been called "Himmler" because she would actually SPY ON US. It's not at all "cute" when you realize there is a Gestapo rabbit staring at you through the window.
