I lived in a single wide trailer for seven years, wheels and all. Now I live in a two story house on a lake married to the love of my life for 36 years. It doesn't matter where you start, but what does matter is what you do to ensure where you end up is where you want to be.

Great story. Years ago my dad built a 6 BR house in a nice neighborhood. One day a guy knocked on the door and verified the number of BR's and said he wanted to buy the house. Keep in mind the house wasn't for sale. When he asked my dad if it was for sale my dad said everything is for sale if the price is right. The guy made a really, REALLY good offer and my dad sold it. Turned out is was a guy out of Detroit that opened the first strip club in town. He also started running hookers out of the 3 BR's downstairs. A couple years later he was on the run for some bad stuff and lost the house. My dad bought it back on the court house steps in a tax auction. You never know whats going on next door.

Those "above" can be worse than us common people. I didn't grow up in a trailer park, but I have friends that grew up in exactly what you described. We lived in Indiana and there if you left the wheels on the trailer you didn't have to pay property tax. It wasn't considered a permanent building. Never mind that it had electricity, water and either septic or sewer hook ups.

You brought back a lot of memories bringing up those cinderblock steps. I remember looking at them closely as a kid. I discovered that 75% of them had broken, but just pushed back together to look whole. Kind of weird to look back on stuff like that with fond memories. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I’ve got the sudden desire for a mullet and an I-ROC.

Rob, I’ve got a similar background as you; grew up in a little trailer on a South Georgia farm. Recently moved into a nice neighborhood, as you would say, “high falutin”. So about a week or so in the house, I stop by the Home Depot on my way home and purchase Phillips hue light bulbs for my patio. You know, so I can dim it down from my phone and set the mood. I’m out there with a cocktail enjoying myself on a Friday night when my wife calls yelling hysterically at me. Turns out a neighbor drove by and saw my nice hue light bulbs and gave my wife a courtesy call. It was then i learned that in this neighborhood, a colored light bulb is how you let the everyone know you’re a “swinger house “ 😲

I grew up mostly in US Military family housing. Not a lot different. My first place on my own was at a run down motel on the edge of town by the tobacco warehouses. It is where all the migrant workers lived when they planted or cut tobacco. I paid $65 a week in 1992. For that I got a 8x15 room with a shower, and toilet behind a door at the other end. The sink was in the main room. It had a color tv and basic cable. I got fresh sheets, towels and wash clothes on Mon. and Thur. For $10 extra they would wash, dry and fold one load of my personal laundry. My second place was with my first wife in a 1976 single wide, 2 bedroom, one bath mobil home. It was a rental in a trailer park with only 10 trailers. It was $150 deposit, $350 a month plus electric and water. It was old and rough looking outside but it had been reinsulated, sheetrocked, new sinks, shower/tube, toilet, appliances, carpet, vinyl and such. The forced air heat and AC actually worked good off an updated heatpump. It was a decent place to live for our first year.

Not to surprising. When I worked security in exactly the kind of neighborhood you live in there was a known brothel. Difference is the HoA came down on the johns getting in and the mixture of that with a paper trail deterred them and eventually they foreclosed on that house.
