That's what gets me about most car dealers. I've gone onto lots before and the first thing I'll tell the sales guy is "Don't BS me." Which of course means they will simply BS me more, I'm well aware. What they don't get is, being pretty handy with a wrench, I'll be willing to buy a lot of stuff that other people wouldn't. You flat out lie to me, though, and I'll walk right off that lot and never come back. And trust me, I'll know if you're lying to me. Well, at least most of the time.

Rabbit everything you said about a Carfax report not always being accurate is 100% true. I work as a condition report writer at a major auto auction. We see Vehicles everyday that have clean car carfax reports that have been in major auto accidents. People that work in the automotive industry can pretty easily spot repair jobs that or spot wear and tear that does not match the mileage. Unfortunately the average car consumer does not have that level of knowledge to spot things that would alert them that the Carfax is wrong. A coworker of mine recently had a situation buying a 2019 used RAV4 from a local dealership. He was told that it was bought at auction and used to be owned by Enterprise rental car and that it had a clean Carfax. When the car was shipped from California to the dealership he was buying it from. He easily spotted the left front fender and driver's door was previous subpar repair with dirt and fish eyes in the paint. The dealership he was buying it from was pounding that clean Carfax. He showed the sales manager the previous repair and they negotiated a different selling price saving my coworker a couple thousand dollars. As you know Enterprise Rent-A-Car has their own body shops so any repairs made to their vehicles would never get reported to Carfax.

I had carfax put an accident on my car when I was only a witness to the accident. My car was not involved in the accident and received no damage whatsoever. I owned the car since new and never had any incidents. When I went to trade it in the dealership showed me the carfax and asked me about the accident and by seeing the date I knew exactly what it was. How that happened to show on my car, I have no idea, but I now do not have any faith whatsoever in carfax.

That's how I picked up a loaded 06' Tucson gls sport suv w/ all the factory options of the time. Yeah, I know it's got a salvage title however it's paid for, everything works, it's really nice for what it is, it's well taken care of and runs like a top. Everything you said about Carfax is 100% correct. These reports can also be modified as long as you can support your argument, I bought a car with a clean title and a dirty carfax for cheap and successfully had Carfax update their records and got a clean Carfax before I sold it.

My 2018 wrangler rubicon had a pretty major interior fire, insurance was giving me all kinds of headaches about it. Luckily I own it outright so I have the title in my hand. Told insurance to screw off and I fixed it myself. You can’t tell at all now and it has a clean title still with zero issues. I never plan to sell it but CARFAX would 100% miss this because I never had an insurance payout on it. Btw glad someone in the upstate is finally doing good on your tube and have stories about where I live.

100% spot on. A CarFax report is only as good as the information they have been provided about the vehicle. Typcially, if collision damage doesn't exceed the particular state's threshold for reporting, the insurance company won't report it to CarFax. And, while some states forward mileage infromation from the annual inspection to them, many states do not.

@@nakian5316 idk about other companies, but the company i work for offers full coverage at a reduced value and it goes through a strict review. If a subsequent wreck occurs that is where initial research if available comes in to only cover what was actually damaged by the wreck. It's a process.

My wife and I always use Car Fax when buying a car, but it's only one piece of the information we gather. We also look at Consumer Reports for any issues on the car type we are interested in. We also closely inspect the car, and lastly on occasion we take the car to a mechanic and pay for an inspection. Car Fax by itself is only one piece of information it is not infallible.

There are many ways Carfax can get things wrong. Even on good cars. I bought a 99 escort back in 09 where it read 36,976 miles. Carfax flagged it as the last registration read 37k. Everything matched up until that point. 1 owner car bought from the local rural Ford dealer around the corner. It looked new, and the clutch pedal/solid feel of the clutch/shifter made me believe this old couples story about it. Dealer quoted them 4grand to fix it, and tried to sell them a new Focus. So I picked it up for $600! A new e-brake cable and a caliper later she was on the road. I put another 184k miles on it without replacing anything but brakes/tires/wheel bearings. Frame eventually rusted out, but it still ran great on that original clutch! Something tells me it didn't have over 300k on it because I beat the hell out of it. People sometimes just round up when re-registering a car.

Here the problem with what he said about odometer reading, the reading is now stored in the instrument cluster. So even of your dash fries you can still scan the car and get a odometer reading. Man I had a carfax problem. Im from PA but I lived in south FL for a few years. I had a 2009 Chrysler 300 to run around in, and drive up to see my family. Well one time I had the oil changed while up in PA, and I guess they didnt enter the milage right. As a matter of fact, they put 20,000 more miles in the computer than was on the car. Fast forward, my dad died, I moved back home, and was driving his old truck and a jeep, so with winters I didnt need a rear-wheel-drive yacht. So I parked the 300. Well after about 9 months my mom decided she liked my jeep and wanted one herself. So I thought lets take the Chrysler in and see what we can do on a 2 car trade deal. ( this would free up a lot of space in my barn). So the dealer pulls up the carfax and sure enough, there is ODOMETER ROLLBACK WARNINg right at the top. Guy tells me he will offer $500. So Im livid, because I have an 8-year-old beautiful 300 will all the bells n whistles you can want, and this asshole will only offer $500. So I reached out to carfax, who said I had to contact the service department, who will need to change their records. Called the garage up who did the work, and was pretty much told to screw off. So I stuck a sign in the window and sold the car out of my yard. Even told to the buyer about the milage bullshit. So carfax cant be trusted. But it is a handy tool to look at

First vehicle I ever bought from a dealership was a flood vehicle. I thought the stains were from a split drink the way they were. Had a clean car facts on it but after a couple months it definitely showed. Electrical issues out the ass. Randomly it would loose headlights the gauges would come and go the 4 wheel drive would occasionally act up. Figured it out when I drained oil from something 90% of people never touch. The differentials were both half full of water. At that point I thought ok someone took a 2004 GMC envoy with the straight 6 off roading? At this point I decided well let’s see what in the transfer case and it turned out to be empty. Dropped the transmission pan and finally got confirmation on what the deal was. It had more water in it than it did proper fluid. I drove it for 4 years like that knowing this just dealing with it. When the transmission finally went my sister who knew the history decided she wanted it because it was better than what she driving once it had another transmission

Carfax is a tool, but its not everything. For example, if you buy a 90s collector car in mint condition from the original owner and the carfax shows the mileage every year for the inspection and dealer service if one mistake on the title happens with the DMV they will mark the mileage at 99,999. There's a box on old Massachusetts titles that says "I attest the mileage on the odometer is accurate within excess of mechanical limits." A lot of people that don't understand that sentence check the box and the DMV will ask, "Did you mean to check that box?" And when you say "Well the odometer is correct", they respond, "This box means the odometer has rolled over or has stopped working, should I report this as True Mileage Unknown or 99,999?" There is a way to fix this but it involves signed, notarized statements and a DMV fee. So when your 20,000 mile car in mint condition and the original tires gets inspected and the station reports the mileage back to what the odometer says, the little "Car Fox" will say "Warning this vehicle has an odometer discrepancy". Meanwhile other dealers are skimming miles off using the CarFax as Rabbit said... I also bought a 2-year old Tahoe from a Chevy dealer with 30k miles that had a "clean CarFax" and come to find out the entire truck was repainted... I got a good deal, but maybe that's why... I can still sell that truck with a clean CarFax meanwhile the actual 20k mile car has a "mileage discrepancy". It actually does make things worse because without CarFax I would have looked closer at the Tahoe and noticed where it was repainted. You want to know the truth, not what CarFax tells you is the truth... Also had a Camaro that was in a couple accidents and they never popped up on CarFax for some reason...

1 to add to the list: Rental car agencies. Or anyone else who’s self insured. Doesn’t hit the car fax. It’s all taken care of in house. I saw a brand spanking new dodge caravan at enterprise I rented that ended up having an older motor & trans. They even used the old mounts and hardware which was one of the first giveaways. Someone rented it for a couple days and got themselves a brand new drivetrain and of corse the kids at the counter are none the wiser. Same with the wrecks these rental car companies have. You’ll never know.

The story about the Tahoe reminds me of the episode of Married With Children where Ed Bundy decides to buy another car.

Youre partially incorrect with the insurance part of it. So long as a police report/accident report is recorded it's added. I used to search down accident reports for my uncles friends old car lot. Half of the stuff was "no damage reported" and still on the Carfax just because there was an accident report. Hell, we had a civic si with no insurance hit a tree and it was on the Carfax. However, the odometer part I can attest to. There was a Mitsubishi Galant that supposedly had 40000 miles on it. It had 340k. We found the service records for oil changes under the seat lol

The Car Fox was actually the "bad guy" when the promo started years ago

That’s exactly how they do it. The guy I used to sell cars for would go to ritchie bro. And he’d look at all the k’d out fleet trucks carfax before the auction started to see which ones he could give a haircut too before he started bidding.

I bought a salvage title car (I knew it was salvage) with a clean car fax...
