cool youtube name, indeed, I've been waiting for this for several months. release date pushed back. I hate reviews with mostly guitar solos, need rhythm playing to hear the texture. anyway, I said elsewhere, you need this pedal up on a table or stand to adjust stuff, cause there's way too much tinkering you can do. if it is on the floor, it is tough to bend down and tinker, you'll just move one knob or button, stand up and settle for that sound. cool pedal. getting one

@@hollowmenrule Thanks very much. I think both Colin and Rabea showcased this pedal *most excellently* ..but I do agree that only 4 patches is a bit limited for a pedal that does so much..? If they did that, which they have done, It would just be a regular effects processor which is difficult to use. I'm coming from multi effects processors, but I just can't really see myself using normal analog pedals, I now have all the 200 series and it is still hard to use, Be a doesn't really even explain how to work this thing like a boss, and he can't just do that because it is very complicated and needs time to even understand how each individual pedal truly works aside from just changing different forms of drives, so it offers more than he is actually showing but it's something that requires patience. once you have all these pedals and truly understand them, you can just sculpt out tones that people will never be able to get, also because it is not a real analog pedal, some tones actually just don't even exist in the analog world and even if you want to achieve them with analog pedals it would cost you more money time and effort to do that.

I want to clear the air, since a lot of people can't seem to figure this out; this is NOT a DIGITAL Distortion, it's a HYBRID Drive, so it uses analog & digital circuitry. All the editing & structural stuff is digital of course, there are multiple analog circuits in there, used to drive multiple drive presets accordingly, & then they use digital modelling to approximate the tones of the more specific presets. For example the celebrated "Centaur" is built off one of Boss's analog OD circuits (It sounds like the SD-1w Waza craft circuit) & then that audio is digitally modeled into a Centaur, which is one reason why this thing sounds so amazing. So it's almost like a modular drive. Hope that makes sense. Don't forget you also get the gate in this pedal, & there are actually 128 presets, not just the four they first shipped it with.

@@michaelinglis567 I would say it's probably one of the best competitors to the HX Stomp distortion wise. To me, the sound in the demo is nicely spanky and full. What's the thing about "too digital"? Most bands these days have digital modelers in the studio and live gigs because nobody in the audience can tell the difference and it reduces the logistics costs to a marginal compared to having to bring the full backline accross the Atlantic for example. Also, a digital modeler is tonally more consistent at very different volumes which makes it easier for any sound guy to work with. Comparing this pedal to most other pedals, be it digital or analog or even a tube drive at the price level I would say this beats many in their own territory. I think that what you might be afraid is the versatility, the possible case of drowning into all the possible sound combinations and instead of playing you end up tweaking it a lot and then selling it because you're happier with something that does maybe only one or two tricks but do them really well and I totally respect that.
@michaelinglis5675 жыл бұрын
@@NorgGrimm Lol i modify all my pedals and guitars to have stupid rediculous options. So I'm not afraid of versatility but I get why you might think that. I don't care what other people hear. I care what I hear. If what I'm hearing really resonates I play better an am inspired to wrote better riffs. I've been playing almost 20 years and in that time have played stupid amounts of digital and analog gear. Now I still love several digital pedals like delays etc. But I just don't feel inspired when I'm playing through cab sims or amp moddelors. And I've spent considerable time getting to know plugins and digital moddelors in order to get the most out of them and at the end of the day I find tones I like but they just aren't anywhere near as good as what I get through dedicated analogue gear, they just work in a pinch in my opinion. If a pedal has a ton of options in my experience it's to make up for the fact that nothing it offers is great, just quantity over quality. I get excited about my tones and can't wait to show my friends that I jam with how I get them. Hell I'll torture my girl by talking for an hour a day about a tone I'm in love with. But I've never once felt that way with amp/cab moddelors/sims. The argument that your audience can't tell is also something I disagree with. They can tell if I'm into it or not and when my tone is good and I'm happy with it then im gonna express that. I really think it's lame to say "ahh they can't tell anyways just use moddelors". Sure carrying around a tube amp and cabinet is hard work but to me it's completely worth it. I want people to hear tones I'm proud of not just tones that work.
@Art-zs6sl4 жыл бұрын
@@michaelinglis567 I am with you Michael, keep doing what you are doing. And to timoteus, digital has a sound characteristic that lacks mojo. Lots of digital stuff is fantastic, but 'too digital' is a sound and is always negative. That's what people are on about, try a line 6 modeler and you will get an idea pretty quick. Even the best amp modelers hide behind the fact that they are recreating an amped mic tone when comparisons are made. Also, tonally consistent seems to equal less dynamic in my experience.
@khay22104 жыл бұрын
Distortion and stuff doesn't inspire, the eq, md and dd does the inspiration and that's why I got them first, I'll get this in two weeks just to complete the series and it works. the OD 200 looks amazing and believe me it sounds amazing, but basically if one knows how to dial in an amp, then an OD is just over rated even though having one is a good idea, but it's just not mind blowing. And some of the sounds are from the UAD Apollo, and that is the mother of inspiration. The thing with Hybrid pedals is patience, you don't want to explore everything at once, maybe take a few days to learn one mode after cycling through the whole thing.

Sounds awesome, the problem I have with multi effects is that the more complicated they are and the more functions they have, the harder it becomes to find that one special tone back once you found it. They still only have a few dials and switches. I think there is a lot improvement to be made with the user interface (in a general sense not just the OD-200). I know you can save things but even then it's hard to find back all the parameters you dialled in. Something like PC functionality where everything is show at once without navigating 200 menu's with only a little LCD display. Or even just a bigger display with more parameters than 3 digits.

plus as he says on a website review, drives can be stacked in series or parallel, that is really cool a lot of awesome options. from his review: The only thing I’m not clear on is where you select between Serial and Parallel Drive + Boost modes. The manual talks about STRUCTURE being SERIES or PARALLEL - but there are no illustrations to underline that. I would guess that these would be additional settings found within the Parameter selection of the pedals - after the Boost Types, and somewhere in the mix with the PRE and POST Gain/Boost settings. UPDATE! - Not sure if the manual has been more recently updated or I missed this fact initially, but the STRUCTURE is set by hitting the PARAM and MEMORY buttons simultaneously to enter Settings Menu Mode - you then rotate the PARAM knob to the appropriate option which is ’Str’ then you click and rotate to select either SEr (Serial) or PrL (Parallel) then click PARAM button to select, and PARAM and MEMORY simultaneously once more to exit Settings Menu.

It just doesnt sound "full" enough its just too (i hate saying this as its not exactly what i mean but as close as i can think to say) digital. Digital can sound excellent dont get me wrong, just doesnt have the life in it that analog circuits do. I used to think that digital could be just as good as analogue until i realized my digital pedals didnt inspire me anywhere near as much as analouge pedals do. These days most people dont give a shit where their tone comes from but i really think thats a sad state of affairs. I build my own pedals and if theres any pedal im best at building its OD's. Ive built treble boosters, Klon Clones, ect. and they just have a ....damn how do i put it into words......fuck. Anyways, its not bad at all. Its just not something id spend money on. But then again im certainly not their target demographic. I rarely buy pedals unless im really impressed. If i didnt build my own pedals and wanted OD variety without having to buy several pedals this would work just fine. But 10:34 sounded sick, great playing!

I agree. I consider myself pretty open minded about the analog x digital theme. The pedal sounds quite nice, but it's like something trying to mimic a lot of things, and doing the job pretty well, but not really nailing any sound. Too well behaved, too sculpted, too predictable, doesn't have a sound signature. And for this price point, If someone has enough open mind to give it in to digital distortion, I don't see the point in paying more than 200 bucks in just one effect (distortion), when for the same price you could grab one of the new multieffects pedals (ex. Mooer GE-200) which have everything else in it
@michaelinglis5675 жыл бұрын
@@MuchachoC I couldn't agree more with your point along the lines of, if your already going to be using digital why not just buy a multieffect unit which is way more versatile. Hey Rabea! One year ago Strymon Sunset was your fav (at that moment) overdrive pedal. What would you pick now? Strymon Sunset or Boss OD-200?

sounds just digital to me

Had the unit for a few days then returned it, first five sounds are good to ok, the last seven are shocking, digital fizz with no balls for lack of a better term, rather than playing your constantly turning knobs to get just an ok sound. Test in store before walking out or insure the store has a good return policy, disappointing unit which I was hanging out for and hoped it would be great, for me it’s really not great.

RABEA has got to be one of the most well rounded musicians, i mean this guy goes from light gain to real metal riffs, best review for boss yet,im buying an Od-200 great review.keep rockin

Too much pedal for me 🤯 I’m too indecisive for this many options. Would spend all of my limited practice time tweeking? Sounds great, just too many options? Rabea plays so well, I watch just to hear him noodle!

Time spent tweaking = playing your guitar without thinking = developing you own style...no more druwks for you!

It's really cool, I pre ordered it so I've had it for a few weeks now, only used it a couple of times, trying the different modes in front of an amp, in the FX Loop return and it's definitely a lot of fun the the overdrives and distortions sound really good, but I have better distortions and better overdrives, just in my personal opinion. I'm not knocking it, I'm pleased I bought it and it's a keeper. The gate works great by the way :)

Rabea has gotten to the point it doesn’t matter what he plays through he can make it sound good.

Yeah, Mike Hermans syndrome, time to change the (favourite) reviewer? ;)

Would be fun to see someone put together a really bad (but not silly) board, but still having the normal types of effects. So no HM-2 and 5 Mikus. Then have a bunch of different people play that rig and try to get it to sound good. After all it’s not just about spending the money, you also need to know how to twist the knobs :)

does the clean boost work on its own without an OD selected? so would it boost the amps clean and ONLY clean signal or does it only boost the OD and whatever OD on the pedal is selected at the time?

WHY no parametric Eq, WHY ? (it would be too good, we don't deserve)

This peddles a dream and in case I missed it is this only adaptable through effects loops or is it adequate for cheaper amplifiers also ( line 6,15) being plugged in the front through the clean Channel and using it as a distortion pedal on it's own just wondering?
@nathanrowland19185 жыл бұрын
Like most drive pedals it'll work fine in front of the amp. But not the line 6, nothing sounds good through line 6.
@acrossthefire15875 жыл бұрын
@@nathanrowland1918 Lmfao! Thx. I think I might have found the greatest tone line 6 has to offer. On my channel most people don't even realize that's what I'm playing through lol. The Line 6 Challenge " who can get the best sound quality" ????

The funny thing about BOSS product, wherever i keep trying all the od and dist that exist on the market i keep getting back to my sd1 and ds1 for od and dist, and sold all the “boutique” pedal... This might be make me wont buy another od or dist product again....LOL

That pedal sounds amazing. Just has a metric fucKton of low end that I would tone down a bit if I were to use it in a mix

Even with the many tones in a box context, I'm starting to 'believe' that 249.00 is worth parting with to get 12 OD choices 'and' control with MIDI. This way, if you have a MIDI controller, you don't really need to add a pedal switcher to obtain 'program' changes. Also saves space if your'e replacing 3 pedals or more. Rabea is one of the best reviewers out there currently. Good job man!! Bottom line Boss 200 is worth a roll of the dice.

That's a versatile pedal at the hands of a Great Player, but after 10 distortions, they all go through the same chip and have the same buzz. That's why there are only 4 memory channels. Do I like it, yes, just don't expect 10 distinct sounds. Had an OD 20 and it had 2 good sounds. I'd buy it again.
@austinfailz4 жыл бұрын
Not sure why they did the Tube Screamer instead of their own Super Overdrive. It's based off of the Screamer and you can likely get something similar with EQ adjustments, but still.
@darwynth5 жыл бұрын
Can this be set like two individual pedals and can be tweaked or EQ'd individually? Like the left FS is for on/off for the main distortion while the right footswitch is an on/off for an overdrive.

question for Rabea - what's your signal chain? what amp etc are you using?

Hey Rabea - I see your video on Sweetwater.com. Are you a spokesperson for BOSS, or has Sweetwater snagged you to do these kinds of videos? Just curious cause I work there and think it's pretty cool if you're going to test equipment for Sweetwater.com.
