Great review. I bought a 2017 Road King and I love it. It's got enough power to be fun, it handles reasonably, and it's pretty much everything I wanted in a bike.

Congrats! I need something for the longer haul and have been thinking about it as well. I will keep the Night Rod, but it would be nice to have a bagger in the garage as backup.

I keep seeing people talk about how incredible that engine is. I can't help but think that it took Indian providing competition to force Harley to step up their game. I can't wait to test it out for myself.

Freespiritphil hey bud, did you get a chance to ride a bike with new M8? I rode the Road Glide last month and it is a very nice change from last year's engine, power wise. I'm not a fan of the shake at idle but that's a small non issue really.

Freespiritphil good job. I found it a success. it's not for me but I won't knock it because it is a a very nice ride. l say it's maybe even better than the Indian Chief but can't say for sure, It's close but it was smoother than the Indian and handled better when there was a wind.

Great review RH :-) Some one mentioned the price in Europe below. Germany (where I live) this is horrendously expensive - fortunately for HD Germany it doesn't seem to put buyers off. I buy my HD's in the UK, ride them back the same day and register them here.

simon fuller That would be an awesome ride experience! I know Harley is looking at growing their overseas manufacturing to help ease costs as most do still get shipped from the US to Euro markets at this time. I know for India and Asian regions they have plants already. So I hope for the future they have some in Germany/UK to help you folks out as well. Since I started working for them a month ago I had my eyes opened a little more to what the Motor company is trying to do and how they really are trying to connect with riders everywhere and not just the home market. RSMF and enjoy!

I just bought the 2017 and rode the 2018 and they are incredible bikes truly. It is so smooth and it’s got power. Just a fun bike I can ride all day on her. The seat blows I did put on a saddleman which was a big upgrade. I think it rides better than the Street Glide.

Not as much weight on the bars to carry is a big reason. Also the seat on the Road King automatically is bigger and rounder than the Street Glides. So it gives it a better ride. I like these more as well.

That is true, but for mainline production for a big twin it is. I kind of forgot about the FHA racer and I meant to say besides the Revolution as well, and I own a freaking Night Rod so I should not have forgot. But for big twin mainline production it is the first in the line at least. FINALLY lol.

So far every review of the new M8 models have been super positive. Heck, even Shawn Smoak bought one. And when a mechanic of 30 years buys a first year model H-D, you know it has to be impressive. On a sad note: it's too bad about the V-Rod line being cancelled. But it's understandable - with the Octane almost matching the performance of the V-Rod and at a 10 grand price tag, Anyway, thanks for another great review and RSMF

Yeah for sure, It just grabs me better. I own a 2002 Vrod, so the Fueling felt really nice to me, just like the Vrod does. Immediate & on the Indian I felt the throttle was not connected to me directly. I just have to get used to the weight of this beast. It's a lot more to roll around than my Victory was.

Ah an original Vrod owner! With this being their last year that is a good spot to be in terms of collectability in the future. The Vrod does have very good fueling for sure, and Harley after the 95-01 group of FI has come a long way as well. What kind of Vic did you have?

Hedge, I had the 2001 Victory V92C Deluxe ... a beautiful Antares Red, It was Immaculate. an very great Bike. It made getting a new one very hard. But I had 35,000 miles on it & it ws time for a new one. I have to get used to the weight of this New Road King, I'm only 145 lbs. so it's a bit overwhelming, like starting over as far a balancing it at stop lights & stop & go traffic with the wife on board ....

I just picked my 17 road king up (less than a 1000 miles) I had a stage 3 kit installed out of the box looking for as bit more power than my last road king which 'll add, I loved. I just wished it had a little more balls...... Well....new motor and a stage 3 kit...Dam! This bike hauls ass out of the box and way on up the gear train.. Dam this this is f-n fast for a bagger.. Dam! Worth every penny of it..

I LOVE my 2017 Road King. It is the first Harley I've ever owned that left the dealer in full stock mode, and I've yet to be in a hurry to change anything. Eventually I will get the Stage 1 setup on it, but honestly it rides so well stock that it hasn't been a priority. HD did a fantastic job with the bike as a whole. The engine has a ton of power, and the suspension is by far the best I've ever ridden on a Harley.

About 2 months ago I installed a Stage 1 kit onto my '17 Road King, with a set of classic 14 inch ape hanger bars and Cobra Neighbor Hater exhaust. What I nice set up! I have zero desire to do anything else to the engine at this point as the 107 with the Stage 1 and SE ProStreet Tuner gives me plenty of power.

How is the low speed handling? I am 60 yrs old and am always concerned about the weight and balance of these big baggers. I have a 600 lb Suzuki Boulevard cruiser now and I am ready to move up. Thanks for any comments on how it feels to handle this Road King, which is my favorite Harley.
@RabidHedgehog
@RabidHedgehog 7 жыл бұрын
I think it is pretty balanced with the Milwaukee 8. I find it interesting that with the Twin Cam it seemed to want to fall left. With this one since the primary has slimmed down I think it also helped shift the weight off and it just feels more balanced.

I loved your reviews of this and the Springfield bike. I was wondering of you could comment on the lean angles for each bike? I'm in the market for this class of bike but am coming from a sportbike life and am worried about dragging bike parts. Thanks!
@RabidHedgehog
@RabidHedgehog 7 жыл бұрын
Dragging the boards and such are not really a problem for the bike as they have some skid zones built into them. On the lean angle side of it the Road King provides 32 degrees of lean angle both sides (a .1 advantage to the left side since there is no exhaust). Indian does not provide this measure in their spec sheet but riding both I believe it is a very similar degree at around 32. Springfield carries its weight differently and seems to be a little more maneuverable in corners, but only by a small degree. I recommend doing a back to back ride of them to see which will fit your style best.

I'm wondering the same thing, rode sport and raced dirt for last ten or so years, bout a scout which is great for around town but doesn't suit long rides so considering upgrade and debating dark horse Springfield or road king special, seems like either way I'd be happy making it a huge toss up. I've heard about potential to drag on the RK how's the engine heat on the too? Big consideration dealing with south Texas heat and San Antonio traffic
@RabidHedgehog
@RabidHedgehog 7 жыл бұрын
The engine heat of the M8 is significantly less than the Indian Springfield at this time. The oil cooling helps out quite a bit.

Just picked up an ‘18 FLHR. All I can say is BEAST! Smooth & refined, but still all HD cocky. It growls thru the gear box with minimal vibration. No lugging or huffing between 3rd and 5th. My only concern? I may never find a need for 6th as top speed around these parts is 70mph and I’m doing that in 3rd without really trying, or noticing for that matter. As a multiple HD owner, I couldn’t be happier with the new 107 M8. As to all the “they’re catering to millennial” talk. I don’t know too many ladyboys who can hang with this much power.
@RabidHedgehog
@RabidHedgehog 6 жыл бұрын
Well I am one of those millennial peoples (well seriously on the older side since the census bureau decided that 1984 would be the date for that label instead of the later 80s or early 90s like it used to be), and I love the Road King with the M8 updates as the air suspension was not really the best for long hauls and the emulsion system is much better and quicker to set pre-loads to make it comfy. And yes it has a great amount of power that is fun to play with on such a large machine. I am still looking towards a touring style bike to add next to my Night Rod Special and this one keeps coming up, but then again, I like the Triumph Tiger and the Moto Guzzi Stelvio and some others that call me to try them out too. But I do like the power and the ride.

Nice review. after watching this I could only think to myself "I wish you drove the Indian and victory like this" I test road a '17 Street glide and was very impressed. how was the wind protection when you were at speed?
@barrybuchanan788
@barrybuchanan788 7 жыл бұрын
I can't comment on Rapid's take on the wind protection. I can on mine though. I have had 2 previous Road Kings an '07 Custom, and an ''09 Classic with 21 inch apes. I traded in a loaded '13 Road Glide custom on my '17 Road King. The bike comes stock with an HD detachable windshield. so far I have broken triple digits only a couple of times speed wise. I have however had the bike between 70 mph and 85 mph several times. The wind protection is what you would expect from a bike that only has a windshield for protection. The difference this time around the revamped suspension on the bike which is a much smoother ride now that the air shocks have been replaced and the front shock are no longer free floating. You will get some wind which is to be expected, but the overall ride with the reduce engine noise and vibration thanks to the single cam and added engine counter balancing makes for a much improved ride. I've noticed at speeds in the 45 mph to 60 mph range I hardly notice wind at all. I'm to busy enjoying the ride.
@RabidHedgehog
@RabidHedgehog 7 жыл бұрын
naminator 1454 Wind protection is actually decent from just the windshield. No buffeting on the head or neck twists or anything like that. I use a HJC IS-MAX II modular helmet for reference. But my GoPro setup while wireless does cause tons of drag and this kept that from happening.
@barrybuchanan788
@barrybuchanan788 7 жыл бұрын
I live in Arkansas and ride down to Ardmore a couple of times a year. I normally don't wear a helmet. My Guage on wind buffering is my wife and how much she is getting blasted. The first thing I did to the bike when I brought it home was shelve the stock seat and put the Hammock that was on the "13 I traded in on it as well as the highway pegs that I have had on every HD bagger I've owned. That was a major comfort improvement. The wife said the wide situation for her is a huge improvement over the Road Glide. The thing she was really excited about was the suspension. She has some back issues and is loving the smoother ride.

I have personally seen many Twin Cams over 100K and several 50K+ still running strong. The M8 seems to be, at least initially, running well and holding up better than the first gen Twin Cams. There are some oiling issues being reported, but I believe there is a simple fix to it. They use oil passages in the heads for cooling, but as we know HD models on their first service are full of debris in their oil as the engine is still honing itself. I believe that if they switch to a manufacturing process of putting break-in oil and putting the engines through some dyno cycles first, then changing the oil out and putting in standard oil, then shipping it would help. That way the engine gets the metal out early on and it is not allowed to clot up.

Wonder how it compares to the Freedom 106?
@RabidHedgehog
@RabidHedgehog 7 жыл бұрын
Well, the Freedom makes its power from the mid range rev up and the M8 is a low end bike. I believe side by side they would be pretty even, with the Harley pulling away from stop and the Victory coming in toward the high end.

Hi Rabid Hedgehog. I've watched your reviews on the 2017 Road King and the 2016 Indian Springfield dozens of times. I'll be getting a new bike soon and have narrowed it down to these two. I'm in the northeast so it will be several weeks before I can test ride either of them. I can't decide! Do you still like the 2017 Harley over the Springfield? Both are beautiful bikes. Does the Milwaukee Eight edge out the Thunder Stroke? Comfort and handling? Quality of stock seat? Ride computer? Slow speed maneuverability? Please help! Lol Any more direct comparison information you can give would be great. Thanks! Love your videos and reviews. Ride safe.
@RabidHedgehog
@RabidHedgehog 7 жыл бұрын
Justin Tompkins They are very close together. The biggest advantage the Harley has is cooling and engine temps. Indians tend to get very hot and it passes to your legs and lower sections, but being in the Northeast might not be so much an issue. The stock saddle on each is equal for rider, if you have a passenger make sure they get a chance to ride as well. Perfomance wise these are still primarily a large bike and each engine is optimized for this job and I believe they are equally refined but there is no replacement for displacement so the 111 will edge the 107 in getting you to speed, but both are refined and smooth now, like I said the M8 edges in cooling. Transmissions are equal. Handling goes to the Indian, but not by much, trip computer on the Indian is a little more in depth, but similar to Harley being it's displayed on the console and speedo area. The touring abilities are similar and Harley wins on ergos. Easier to control your options on the Harley on the grips and access the saddle bags from the seat. As you can tell, they're still equal. You can option the Road King to be cheaper than a Springfield if you choose no ABS or security system, so there is the 18999 vs the pretty much 21k pricing.

Rabid Hedgehog I believe there is an OEM add-on oil cooler for the Indian. Not sure how much it costs or how well it works. From a purely aesthetic perspective the Indian wins for me. I love the looks of that Indian Motorcycle Red, valence fenders, and chrome handles vs the black plastic on the Harley. Thanks for the opinions.

When the twin cam was running there was zero vibration. You have the first review that I have ever heard that. I have a 2016 road King and have driven the 2017 and prefer the 2016 but I like the vibration at idle. There is a power difference at low end but your statement of substantial power difference at high speed is confusing. It's like you have never tried the other at high speed before.

I did. Owned a Twin Cam 103 Fat Bob and rode almost all of the Harley line when fitted with the Twin Cam 103, including the Road King. To me the Twin Cam ran out of breath in the upper end.

The harley davidson road king 2017 model looks just like the 1936 knuckle head. even back then the knuckle head could haul ass and here in 2017 if motorcycles get more powerful you might as well drive your car.

Can't see the car thing. I've bought my wife a GMC pickup. My transportation outside of my work vehicle is my bike. When needed the power is nice to have. For the most part a slow roll at 55 to 60 mph is a good day in the wind. I have been pushing my 2017 a little bit, but that is basically just seeing what all it is capable of doing. The Road King and it's styling gives a link to the past. For older folks like me it is a comfortable classy ride that maintains a traditional look.

This is a personal preference for me, but I like the simple windscreen and saddlebags more so than the full fairing and infotainment center, so the Road King would win. You do get the $18,999 price with the Road King, but if you want the fully dressed out bike that the Street Glide provides and the Special starts at $23,999 and the base at $20,999, there really is more on the Street Glide than the Road King when considering the price points are fairly close.

Hedge, this decision has been killing me. it's a toss between a '17 Road King or the Indian '17 Springfield. Help me ... LOL
@RabidHedgehog
@RabidHedgehog 7 жыл бұрын
Johnny Roggio That is like being between a rock and a hard place... The Springfield feels lighter on its feet, has a lower center of gravity and dives into corners with confidence. Good power through the revs with decent midrange as well before tapering off in the upper end. Cons of the Springfield, like anything with the 111, HEAT. these bikes over extended riding get toasty, very toasty. It will make you and your passenger a little uncomfortable. The Road King in basic form is cheaper and has that no ABS option available if you're not such a fan of these systems on bikes. It does glide down the road easily and the new suspension is on par with the Springfield and gives you great comfort. Ergonomics and controls are a little better on the Road King as well. The Milwaukee 8 is a much cooler running engine and even has the cylinder shut off option for high heat day where the bike will idle off the front cylinder only to cut down on heat. The bike does feel heavier while in the corners but that's really it's only flaw. Both are great, it's going to come down to what options you want and price, the Road King will run slightly cheaper than the Springfield but will not have ABS or the Keyless start, and optioned out where both have the same the price is identical. So good luck cause they're equal.

If initial reviews are any indication, even if the Indian and Harley both have comparable engine and suspension now, the Indians put out more heat. Sounds like Harley knocked this one out of the park. About time upper management got off their wallets and let the engineers spend a little money to actually make a competitive bike.

I think after 2 decades of the Twin Cam the ride from the Milwaukee 8 is very deceptive. On the Twins I have owned you kind of know when you have hit around 70 mph. On the the 2017 when I think I have hit that mark I look down and I'm running 85. So now it is a readjustment process. The added torque is nice though. It eliminates a lot of down shifting in passing or acceleration situations. Just simply twist the throttle and the response is there.
@RabidHedgehog
@RabidHedgehog 7 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean about the Twin Cams and 70, my Fat Bob would finally kind of level out as I called it around that speed since the power band kind of would leave there if you shifted for crusing rather than bruising.

Seeing people ride(especially around 100mph!!) with no helmet makes me cringe. Just saw an episode of Alaska State Troopers where a guy was riding a straight line somehow got pulled down to the road with no helmet and died soon thereafter by head injuries. Not worth it!!

@RabidHedgehog
@RabidHedgehog 8 жыл бұрын
It will be a big help. I was surprised how easily it snuck up to speed. The Twin Cam you always knew by the way it was acting where you were in terms of speed and gearing. This one was opposite, kind of like the Night Rod where it just felt it could rev out more and had more linear power and not just all lower end, but it still has great lower end. I feel it felt as balanced as the Indian 111, which I felt was the most balanced American V-twin until now.

***** Yea it looks like it might be really reliable I saw they are gonna have oil-cooled versions and liquid cooled versions. What bike would you recommend for a beginner who has never ridden anything more then a bicycle? One of the HD street series bikes or a sportster?
@RabidHedgehog
@RabidHedgehog 8 жыл бұрын
joshua holmes Funny thing about the Street is it is Faster than an 883 Sportster in 750 trim. But it is a much lighter and easier bike to get along with in the long term. And liquid cooled if you live in an area that gets toasty in summer time. With that said, the Sportster is also a good platform too, once you get used to its top heavy nature when standing still and you're no longer afraid to drop it. The Sporty also has a fun chassis as well and is comfortable on long rides. This will come down to budget and comfort for you as a rider as I believe both are good for new bikers. I would recommend the MSF course to you before you do get on the road though.

I had a mechanic shortly after I parked it say that he did not like the Vrod noise it made even.... There are some people that just cannot stand change, which without it a manufacturer dies. They did indeed even try to tune in some vibes at idle to make it still "feel" like a Harley, but up and rolling it's absolutely smoother, and even with that tune to make it shake a bit it's still much better. I think this engine though will bring the traditional haters to Harley though because it is a great engine. We'll hope for the best.
