When you know how to start that engine in cold and colder weather you don't have to keep bumping the throttle, a guy lived across the street from me that had an electric start Harley in the mid 70's, he'd come out when there was frost every where, choke the carb and the old Harley would start right up, straight pipes, when the engine was warm it would idle around 850 rpm, it sounded like it was going to die but would not, the guy would get on and take off, you could not talk with in three feet of the bike since the straight pipes were so loud, fabulous old Harley.

When I first saw the Wide Glide, many moons ago, I just knew I gotta have one. I'm on my second one now, a '93 Evo 5 speed and still love it and all it's vibes, despite my 67 years of age. I live in Switzerland and have never had cold starting problems..., you just have to look after them with a little knowledge and a lot of TLC. As the Hedghog said here, " a lot of people still prefer the Evo motors" and I'm one of 'em. I've only ever ridden Shovels and Evos and have no intention of riding anything else..., if you need to be an electricien with a Laptop to service a bike, then i'll pass on that one. PS. It's only the name Wide Glide that still lives on, the Wide Glide of today has not much in commen with those of the Evo days.

Best way to warm up an evo is to ride it. Turn off enrichner soon as you can and keep the rpms low for a few miles to let motor get up to temp before you go twisting the throttle to much. I've yet to have base leaks or rocker cover leaks
@stevenbarrett70713 жыл бұрын
Use enrichner, shut off enrichiner soon as ya can, and ride it. But,I keep rpms around 1500 while you ride for three miles or so getge5 the cases up to temp before hammering on the throttle. Like said I do this all the time even in winter. Just keep rpms low until you go hog wild on it and cases base gaskets, heads, etc wont leak. I'm my experience anyway.. the key is keep the rpms low until motor is up to temp

Going through it now, ran good but I pulled the carb to freshen it up, I have a 15 deluxe, and a 97 road king also, love my Twinkie but really love my evos, they feel more “Harley” to me than the newer ones. After the F-head, Flathead, Knucklehead, Panhead, Ironhead, and Shovelhead, this single-cam, Evo FXWG Wideglide, Blockhead, is the best of all the present-day Harley Davidson motorcycles! This particular 1982-84 Model is the Bike which Mr Honda based my present 1985-2016 Honda CMX250C Rebel on, another classic its own right! None of that highly complex, highly expensive, electronic wizardry, gear and chain-driven, twin-cam trickery! Just a simple Evo, single cam motor with 4 lobes on it...and twisted push-rods!...LOL...! Many thanks for the video, Hedgehog. One for me to keep for reference! P.S I actually prefer the classic Sportster appearance of my air-cooled, carburated, Honda 250 Rebel, to the new water-cooled 300/500 Rebels! I have owned a dozen Harleys, all of them being Shovelheads with 4 speed transmissions and carbs. Never had a 'cold weather start' problem .Just a matter of learning each individual bike and where to set the choke. By the way, Those are not vibrations, they are power impulses, lol. That youngster doesn't know what vibrations are until he rides and old 900 Sporty. And somebody would have to show him where the shifter was.

Guys are spoiled by modern technology and are another generation. I had an 01 FLH and was glad to get rid of it . Found it at a yard sale and it was super clean, ran good, rode good but it wasn't my type of machine. I'm not a fan of fuel injection or computerized bikes with sensors on it. I bought it because the price was right and I really couldn't find anything else I liked or older that I was looking for. I don't like the chain with tensioners design either or the motor and trans bolted together. I ride what I consider a true Harley in all aspects. 1973 FLH Shovelhead. Many consider these the last true Harleys as I do myself. The Evo is an upgraded shovel but its newer, different and has that newer look to it. I don't like the look of the Evo upper half at all. The shovel has that old school look and sound. Solid mount vibration isn't that bad when everything is like it should be. Aligned and tight. I can ride mine all day easily in comfort even with ailments. So it's personal choice and what you grew up with pretty much. I grew up with Panheads running around, new Shovelheads being made and just the older bikes the dominant ride on the road. The newer stuff is so different and caters to a different type of person that aren't who I relate to. So old school for me is what's in my blood and always will be. There isnt anything on a newer bike that sparks my interest at all. They just aren't the same machines they used to be. They don't sound or look like the older bikes... Anyway to each their own but I'll be on a shovel or older bike until I take my last breath. Your assessment of bikes is your choice your entitled to. I just had to put my thoughts in on the subject... ✌️

Evo = AMF design = HD saved by AMF innovations - evo, 5 speed, rubber mount engines
@RabidHedgehog5 жыл бұрын
This is actually something that can be disputed. Harley completed the separation from AMF in 1981 giving them three years away from them to begin development on the new engine, or the design began with the management team that was going to perform the buyout away from AMFs eyes. Also not all Evos were rubber mounted as Softtails are solid mount in all generations.
@jamiefxd5 жыл бұрын
@@RabidHedgehog Yes, correct on your points made. They were some busy years. Between 1980 and 1986 they released four all new chassis and two new engines. Even though the 80'' engine was still a shovel from the base gaskets down, the new top end was enough to market it as a new engine. After Boston Consulting Group approved new upgrade plans, a large amount of money was injected by AMF in 1976. Work began on the planned upgrade of the big twin and sportster engines, the Nova liquid cooled engines, and several new chassis in early 1977. Key players in the resurgence of the company were Vaughn Beals and Jeffery Bleustein at the top level. Under them was Mark Tuttle ,chief of engineering and Don Valentine who played a key role in designing the Evos. We all love to believe the gang of 13 buyback crew were fully responsible for all the new developments. But, nothing would have happened without help from AMF. AMF put $100 million into the resurgence of a struggling company. That money was spent on a lot of things, including design of the FLT, two redesigns of the sportster chassis, two new evo engines, design of the FXR, the Nova, and upgrading the manufacturing facilities. The foundation design work for the new evolution big twin was completed by 1980. This was all done during AMF ownership. While AMF had more than their share of problems, like how to take production from bench built bikes to a modern day production facility, they sure do seem to have saved our favorite bacon and for that we shall be eternally grateful. ( the book - Harley-Davidson Evolution Motorcycles by Greg Field was used for reference ). Love your video too, many thanks for the ride.
