Thanks a lot for the recap! I'm a Belgian and there are a lot of problems coming our way now. A lot of my fellow countrymen and women are let down by the performance in the group. The loss to Slovakia was upsetting but all the fans were happy with the bounce back against Romania. The reason there is a big discord between the squad and the fans is because of the pure attitude of the team. Eventho more and more Belgians are coming to support the young squad and helping them push on, the squad just doesn't seem motivated. After last evening's match they didn't even greet the fans (ok the fans were whistling but still). This also caused some huge issues in the interviews with De Bruyne and Tedesco, never really addressing the fans or giving an explanation. They just shrugged it off like it's nothing. Given the pour performances and the really bad media handling, a lot of fans don't have any joy in our National team. I hope they find a way to calm down the situation and really prepare for the matchup against France. I really hope we aproach all of next games with a winning mentality and drive! (Also congrats to Romania, Georgia and Slovakia, you guys did really well!)❤️🇧🇪

To be fair, Costa really needs to step up too. He hasn’t made any key saves that would put confidence in him. Other teams you see the keeper stepping up and making key saves when they need, Costa I really don’t have that confidence he can win you the game and make that big save. If it goes to Penalties we are done, you can see that with Porto when he couldn’t even make a single save in the PK in the CL game.

Patricio is a much better keeper. Costa has somehow been hyped beyond his true capability. He was a huge contributor to the second goal by playing the ball back into a risky area as opposed to conceding a corner. Complete nonsense holy moly. First of all, Costa is the first keeper in the world to save 3 consecutive penalties in the UCL. 4 if you count one that had to be repeated. Secondly, he makes huge saves all the time in porto and he already had a couple with Portugal. Thirdly, he almost got to the penalty against Portugal today but the ball was just so perfectly struck no keeper on earth would’ve reached it. He guessed where it was going though, he usually does. Fourthly, the goals he conceded have not been his fault and he hasn’t conceded much. Fifthly, he is great on the ball. Has really good pacing and even dribbling skills yet is underutilized in this regard at the national team. Lastly, the dude is 24. His prime is 5 years down the road.

Antonio had a terrible game and that early goal changed everything for Georgia. That being said... i think we faced the harsh reality that if you want indeed to win something in this tournament talent will not suffice. Im also about to piss off all Ronaldo fanboys because (just like himself) they need to face the music: he is easy prey for an organized, more aggressive, younger defense. I honestly do not know if you started the "normal" team what we could do better since we do like to rotate the ball around at a lower pace but at least i think we would have draw the game. This was one of the worst displays i have ever seen from a Portuguese squad in my life. Martinez tactics are ultra trash. He keeps insisting in this 3 center back thing with wingers out of position and wide players doing God knows what. He's literally trying to reinvent football. The bloke is a total joke of a coach if you ask me. The only time he plays decent is when he stops making up Football Manager schemes in his mind and just let players to their job. This being said, the players who were in the field were all playing for top clubs and what i saw was the most attrocious execution in my life. I kept seeing guys playing for City, Barcelona, Porto, Benfica, Sporting and other PREM squads display ability level that even sunday league would be ashamed off. Portugal cannot brag about how good their second team is before the game and then justify this abomination with squad rotation. The issue here is the coach who is a complete idiot despite the facade that his good maners give off and a team with absolutely NO chemistry nor any emotional control. Remmeber that Portugal's first game was the same. First choices were on the field and the inability to play football was absolute. Trash crosses. PLaying backwards. 0 duels won. No linking of any sort. Vulnerable in the counter. The only difference was that Silva, the most overrated player ever made from Benfica's propagandistic department, wasn't there to show all the issues he displays for Benfica every other match, and the miracle goals at the end didn't appear. This tells me that this squad isn't even a squad. It's a group of expensive players with a bunch of them being overrated. Teams that have chemistry and a game model do not become amateurs unable to make 3 passes against 3d level teams or spend the day sending balls out of the field when a simple 20 meters cross was requested. Portugal cruised trough qualifiers playing average against bad teams. Lost against Croacia. Played bad against Czechia. Were fortunate with Turkey blunder on the 2nd goal who killed the match. Lost against Georgia. Even if they go trough Slovenia, they are out soudnly vs France. Mbappe and Griezman have been missing dozens of goals but France are solid in the back and create chances. Portugal does neither.

I said leading up to the tournament that Portugal has a paper squad. Looks good on paper but rubbish in reality. They try to play like a poor mans Spain and stat pad possession stats with side to side passing but lack any substance when it comes to chance creation. There is no verticality or penetration in the side. They're always too casual and slow in possession which makes them highly predictable. The depth of the squad is a fantasy which was exposed today.
