RAC Database File System Shared or Non-Shared?
One of the commonly asked interview question for the most of the DBAs:
What all files are shared and non-shared in RAC database?
What all files are instance specific or shared across all the instances?
- We have many storage files on the RAC database few of them are shared between all the RAC cluster instances and few of them are non-shared between RAC cluster instance. Those non-shared files are instance specific.
Examples:
system datafile - Shared
sysaux datafile - Shared
users datafile - Shared
temp datafile - Shared
undo datafile - Non-Shared
redo logs - Non-Shared
archive logs - Shared
spfile - Shared
pfile - Non-Shared
passwordfile - Shared
alert logs - Non-Shared
trace and trm files - Non-Shared
incident files - Non-Shared
dump files (core dump) - Non-Shared
audits files
listener log files
Cluster trace files
In addition to the above question the other most commonly asked question is
What all files are supported in ASM storage?
- In simple definition, All binary files are supported in ASM storage
Examples:
All datafiles
Redo log files
Archive log files
Export Dump files
RMAN backup files
spfile
passwordfile
OCR files
ASM password file
ASM spfile
Other than these binary files the remaining most of them are text files which are not supported in ASM storage like
pfile
alert logs
trace and trm files
incident files
dump files (core dump)
audits files
listener log files
Cluster trace files
