This family of raccoons was living in a window well under a deck. The window well provided a perfect playpen for the young babies to stay contained in.
Watch and listen to how the mother raccoon vocalizes in response to us handling her babies!
Enjoy!

@@cindyperez805 What @antifaschi7869 said. Also, a few mothers charge humans, even though we are at least five times their weight, usually more. I raised raccoons. They are no joke: feisty as hell and quite predatory. They'll take out prey over half their size if the opportunity presents itself. I wonder how large an animal mother raccoons would take on to protect their little ones? The babies are so cute, I'd take on a pretty big animal to protect them, too. :)

We had a similar situation with one of the basement window wells under our deck, although since the raccoons weren't really doing any damage to anything I didn't see an issue in letting them stay there. It is -30C around that time of year so I'm sure the warmth through the window combined with the few feet of snow on the deck providing insulation was nice for them. Plus they were cute as hell, I quite enjoyed watching them through the window. I would put my hand on the window and the little guys would do the same with their little hands.
@CuriousBlackKitten
@CuriousBlackKitten 4 жыл бұрын
The issue with letting wild animals dwell in window wells (Say that part out loud, it's fun) is that window wells flood after heavy snows or during hard rains. This may be a safe temporary place for them, sure. But their presence eventually clogs any drains from window wells, which are meant to divert water out. Their urine also does a nasty job against the foundation and mortar of the house, so even if they aren't actively seeking to damage the place, they're inflicting long-term damage. I'd say put a grate on the window well, to keep them out. If you want to give them a warm, safe place to hunker down, you could make some insulated shelters available to them, instead.
@czarpeppers6250
@czarpeppers6250 4 жыл бұрын
@@CuriousBlackKitten Those are some good points, although nor I or my Dad live in that house anymore. That said, it seemed to be the mother's secondary nest, because they only used it during the coldest winter nights. They weren't there on a regular basis. Although last spring I had a family living under my crappy falling apart shed.
@Cgjm129

CuriousBlackKitten HOWEVER (although I agree), the truth is - humans built on their land, knocked down their trees and their habitat to build a house over it. Idk where they’re supposed to go if we keep monopolizing the earth just because we can.
@CuriousBlackKitten
@CuriousBlackKitten 4 жыл бұрын
@@Cgjm129 Yes, and no. Scavenger species are not nearly as populous in the wild as they are in the human habitat. Raccoons, possums, pigeons- they flock to the walls and the asphalt, along with many others. Why? Human life typically directly and indirectly benefits them. We make life easier on them. Predators aren't as common in these concrete jungles, food is aplenty, and we don't know how, or want to know how, to make our habitat animal-resistant. But some animals are specifically evolving, not to stay in their habitats, but to prey on the previously untouched populations within urban environments. Hawks, osprey, bobcats... And finally, yes, our populations are swelling. Our cities are sprawling. But there are more trees, and protected habitats, now than there were even a mere century ago. They have their lands, just as we do. But we are all animals, and so we live together. That's the way of life. Sorry that you have to be a pessimist about it.

Even though raccoons can be pesky and a nuisance sometimes, they are very smart animals and great fun if you Ever Raised one. I had one that was free to go where she pleased but she always stuck around. I would get home from work and call for her. Her name was baby. She would always come running and I would sit down on the lawn chair and she would crawl up and lay across my thigh as I scratched her back and she would purr loudly while suckling on my tummy. The first one I had would play hide and seek with me. I'd run out in the tall grass lay down and be quiet and he would sniff around and try to find me. when he finally came to the opening where I was laying he would rear up on his hind legs and then roll towards me hitting me with his front paws in a playful manner. There's so much more to animals if you only give them a chance and the respect they deserve

Do you know what a window well is for? Collecting rain water and diverting it from the house to reduce seepage and structural damage. You know when raccoons are born? Flood season. They should ALWAYS be moved away from window wells and the likes, because they're otherwise at risk for drowning. Edit: I don't mean to sound aggressive. I just see a lot of comments in this vein, and no one seems to realize what a window well is for.

I swear it was a huge monster sized grown azz raccoon that threaten me on my boat at the boat slip!! I was inside the cabin and heard what sounded like someone had come aboard so I walked out the cabin door to check...it jumped off the back of the boat onto the dock and look back at me as if to dare me to do something!! I started making loud noises to shoo it away and then I got the water hose to spray at it!! In my mind that bandit seemed like the size a small masked monster. 😱 Now, I just feel ridiculous. @@coreydubz3709 ahhh yes ... because you had your house way before racoons ever lived in that neighbourhood. Took a while but I get it now ... so we have rights over their homes but they don't have right to live where we have taken over their territory. ... I get it now.

I have a raccoon that sometimes likes to crash in the backyard. One time me and my landlord were talking in the backyard and the raccoon had jumped over the fence onto our backyard. It looked at us kinda like “What’s good?” And proceeded to walk away towards the shed like if it was a member of the family that just came home. Before I realize we had a raccoon I remember I left a trash bag out by the door and forgot to take it to the bin and that raccoon had the courtesy to make a small hole and take the food it needed. It didn’t leave no mess or crumbs behind. Our raccoon seems to have manners lol

Omg they are so cute! Little bandits 🦝 with masks on! 😆 🤗 their little noises are adorable! They can be vicious tho... we caught one in our courtyard and let him go down the street and while he was in his cage I tried to give him some food and he hissed and snarled at me really nasty! I was like damn! I have it on video! I jumped so high when he did that to me 😂

Any caged, trapped animal will be "vicious" He was scarred to death. Now, if you had fed him in the courtyard, and made "friends" and expressed good intent - he (like most wild animals) would just run away if he didn't want you too close. You don't mention if it was a kit or not, but if you trapped a baby - of course he'd be frightened - out in the day and no Mom in sight!

Adorable as raccoons are, my mother in-law used to do animal rehab in our house, and raccoon babies are super loud. I still have the two giant cages in my backyard. Cuteness outweighs annoyance in my book. My twins grew up with lots of animals in and out of the house.

I could never understand why anyone would have a mama and babies removed from a window well. They sre not hurting anything and will be gone in weeks. I would enjoy watching them and feeding mama. Just me. Job well done as always, with respect for God's creatures and kindness. Many blessing.
