Raccoons are extremely intelligent. I raised one from a newborn found in a fallen tree after a very windy rain storm. The baby could not be reunited with her mother, and the trauma of the tree falling during a storm left her terrified of the outdoors. She would scream and turn her head into my shirt to hide when I took her outside. I, therefore, kept her as a pet her whole life. I kept a diary of her development and of her antics. She loved to figure out how things worked, just like a small child. She would take things apart, unscrewing nuts and bolts, etc. When she knew that she was doing something that she wasn't supposed to be doing, she would put one hand in her mouth, sucking on it the way a child sucks a thumb, while the other hand was behind her back fiddling with something, that I had previously told her to leave alone (like I knew that she would mind me, LOL). It was so cute, and so funny, and SO smart.

I too had raccoons. My dad worked for a logging company. Someone cut down a tree that was being used as a raccoon home, and the mother raccoon was killed. The lumberjacks brought my dad, who was a truck driver, a box with 4 very young baby raccoons. My dad, in an unbelievable display of humanity, decided to bring the raccoons home for us to raise. I was probably 8 when this happened. I remember feeding the babies with human baby bottles at first. They grew fast and figured out how to get in and out of the house. All 4 stayed at our house for about 9 months before they started leaving over night, then gone for 2-3 days, till one day they never returned. They would never eat food they hadn't washed first. Hand them a sardine, and they'll run over to the water bowl and wash it before they ate it. They were very smart, and figured out all the locks/latches on all the food storage containers, and would raid the cabinets when we went to bed. They would drag snakes, birds, rats, squirrels, toads, cats... anything they could subdue, into our house, and have a riotous time "playing" with it in the middle of the night. We started playing with them with a ball, sitting across from them, and just rolling back and forth. They did this, and seemed to enjoy it. But later, we would catch them sitting across from each other, playing with the ball. I learned from them that wild animals are always wild. They will act civilized and tame when they think they'll get food, but they're definitely not.

A raccoon can be a companion but never a pet. they are wild and pretty much sociopathic. they don't feel guilt or remorse as she says. However, they will love you and will lay down their lives to protect you. If you ever get the chance to have a raccoon friend, make sure it's a female. Males can become hyper agressive and vicious when they hit mating season. Just look at my profile pic. that's a pissed raccoon. Heh Females are far ore docile and hyper protective. hell, the one I personally befriended drank beer and chewed tobacco. Be aware that they are destructive so give them plenty of toys and tools to keep them occupied, the shinier the better. They will still destroy things, but just not to that same degree.

Actually, raccoons do seem to demonstrate guilt. I've seen quite a few videos of (pet) raccoons getting caught being naughty (digging in the kitchen trash, opening cupboards, etc.). They tend to adopt that familiar "it wasn't me!" look that dogs do and they even cover their faces in shame.

I lived in Wisconsin when I was little, and my family used to go up north on weekends every summer and stay at a lodge in the woods where we'd feed the raccoons our leftovers from breakfast every morning. (Usually pancakes. Raccoons LOVE pancakes, maple syrup, sausages, bacon, eggs, coffee, you name it. Hungry bandits!) The babies would come out from the big wood pile, waddle right up to us, and take food from our hands. I also sometimes drive up to northern Wisconsin for camping, and the state forest ranger lodge has signs up about their "bandit" problem. Seems their raccoons all know how to get into your unlocked car, open an unlocked car trunk or the back of a truck and open a cooler to rob your food storage blind! And they aren't sneaky about it either... Loud little thieves.

We had a pair of pet raccoons when I was a kid. They were without a mother as she was presumably dead. They grew up to be incredibly sweet and while in about their first year were little deviants they quickly learned through positive reinforcement to behave, much like our dogs did. They were like an ordinary pet, they got along great with our dogs and cat, and were a little shy and would run and hide when company came over but if said company gave them a food scrap they would love them. They both lived to be 12 and 13, before dying a few years back. I miss the little critters.

Just because there are flaws in keeping raccoons as pets doesn't mean they shouldn't be. Dogs and cats were bred over generations before they became ideal pets. Raccoons being smart, trainable, and cute makes them a perfect candidate for domestication in years to come.
@RatchetSchrodinger
@RatchetSchrodinger 7 жыл бұрын
Raccoons are highly intelligent and have adapted successfully on their own to live in close proximity to humans through exploiting our structures, waste, and habits. Cats and dogs began to change on a genetic level so that they COULD adapt to living in close proximity to humans. Raccoons, even if selectively bred for desirable temperaments and other traits better suited to captivity, are opportunistic scavengers that would never truly be "domesticated". I have raised and worked with raccoons for many years- they are not and will never be pets. They belong in the wild and are not here for our amusement.

The fact they are relatively easy to handle as kits gives the possibility for domestication via neoteny. If we can keep them in a permanently juvenile like state through selective breeding (like we did with wolves/dogs) then domestication maybe possible.

Out of all "wild" animals, it seems like raccoons might have the most potential to be dog/cat type pets. It's easy to find and select friendly raccoons, but their curiosity makes them a hassle. I'm not sure how breeders would "remove" this curiosity, while keeping the intelligence. Their musty cousins, ferrets, were domesticated and became pets, so maybe it's in the books.

I have a very persistent raccoon around my house. Every so often, when I go to take the garbage down, I see him sitting on the recycling can next to it, holding the garbage can lid open with his paw. The first time this happened, he looked up, saw me, and slowly lowered the garbage can lid down. Then he stared at me for a few seconds, hopped off the recycling can, and ran into the woods. Our garbage can is really heavy, so he was probably trying to figure out a way to get the garbage inside and get out, because it's too heavy for him to tip over. I've seen him about six times since doing the exact same thing, holding the garbage can lid open and looking inside.

Raccoons have the superpower of managing to cause trouble even in a completely empty room. We had one temporarily in a bare room at the wildlife rehab center once and it pooped on the heating grate and pushed it's poop down into the grate. They're also very unpredictable and can attack without warning even if they were raised from a baby. Definitely not good to keep as pets.

It is not that raccoons are void of guilt and intent on destroying everything, (although I can't say they possess guilt lol) but they are very intelligent and DEMAND constant entertainment. You can buy them baby toys they'll love it, like simple puzzles as in matching shapes to their correct space. But, once they figure it out, they get bored so fast. They need constant stimulation, and without it they will get into anything and everything they can. They can be trained, such as knowing when it's time to eat although they do enjoy snacks throughout the day. They're pricey little buggers in terms of keeping them disease free and stimulated. A raccoon is far from being like a dog or cat. They do like to play, but their needs are so much constant and demanding, so in that sense it is best to not keep them as pets unless you have time and money for them, if not, take the babies to a sanctuary or something similar where they can be released or properly taken care of. I'd recommend leaving these animals to professionals.

Well I have to dis agree on a point or two; Raccoons DO have an opposable thumb! They are not so interested in shiny things, but things that have texture, bumps and the like, (like coins, crumpled tin foil, keys) You will notice they aren't looking at such objects when playing with them. I gave one a pair of vise grip pliers to feel once, when he was done feeling it with his hands he laid on top of them and felt them with his belly. Correct that they don't see in the dark any better then we, but they use echo location. When they are foraging you can hear their little nasal grunts. They do LOVE to steal things, and have a very strong sense of ownership. They often "stash" stuff they like. :)

They did something similar with Foxes in Russia, which are overall a little bit more containable than raccoons, but I don't doubt a scientifically domestic raccoon would be possible Maybe not in our lifetimes, but our grandchildren may be able to get a pet raccoon Of course, if the human species doesn't extinct themselves first

On one note, I agree with you. On another I don’t. I love animals and have handled many things such as hawks, raccoons, and much more. My dogs had pinned a raccoon up in a tree. We brought it in and put it in a decent sized cage. It was obviously in shock and when I saw it was young, we took it in. We gave it a whole bathroom with sticks and leaves and had a bath ready for whenever she wanted to hop in. she also used a cabinet drawer as a little den. I say all of this to say she eventually became my best friend.

Gotta love raccoons -- cute and mischievous; one of nature's finest creatures :) I've known a few people who have kept them as pets; it's not impossible, but they are a lot of work. I personally wouldn't recommend people doing it, unless said person checks local laws (most states don't allow it), has plenty of knowledge and some hands-on experience with raccoons (like at a rehab). Sometimes having an exotic companion can be a good thing, but often times it can be quite a risk. That's why raccoons are for certain people and not for everyone.

I raised a baby raccoon and returned him to the wild once.. Raising a raccoon in your home is a *bad idea*. I named him Stitch(Like that psycho alien from Lilo and Stitch), because he was kind of hellish in in his behaviours.. He was really cute, but very frustrating at the same time. I bottle-fed him and he was on a schedule, like a human child(Except that scream was less than human when he was hungry). He was messy, destructive and when he did bite, it was pretty painful.. Oh, and he liked to pull hair and not let go.. He returned to our home for quite a long time after his release, but eventually visited less and less, until he stopped coming. We faded out the hand-outs, so I think that deterred him after a while(Raccoons will always come back if they know there's food). When he was a baby, I showed him how to forage for food and he even caught a mouse one time(Which was the most horrifying thing..). Anyway, she's right- don't take in a raccoon!! Leave it to the wildlife rehabilitators! Loving your channel!

look at her telling you what to do, 'leave the baby raccoons outside', no if their mother gets run over you need to take care of them , you have stolen all their habitat and left them no food in the wild. they only go through damage phase because they have deep seated resentment of humans, once they get it out of their system they stop it. They have been horribly persecuted and oppressed by human species, don't blame the victim.

actually they are more secseful spicy and the citie from in the wild if they could choose they would want that all of the planet will be humen cities. we are the best thing that hapend to all of this medium to small size oportunists animals like raccoons and mouses. its all of the ather 99% spicies that we need to feel guilt about them and by the way. i think that if you take a baby raccoon you are 99% steal him from his mather and a better life.

When I moved into my house 30 years ago we had a lot of feral cats so I started feeding them catching them and getting them fixed, well Raccoons and skunks which was ok until I put in a cat door and came downstairs one night to find a raccoon a skunk and a cat all eating out of the same dish! They have never caused any problems and now that my dogs have passed away I've never had the skunks spray. They all get along really well and luckily live in an area where they catch and test the local raccoon population for diseases regularly. I've gotten over 100 cats fixed and homed over the years so I guess it's ok.
